yeah, It's like how we get a monthly, or bi-monthly apple troll article. like the one yesterday.
You know why the most negative news always comes in the most? because people are cynical depressed bastards in all honesty.
and to make their lives a little more exciting, they have to have bad news, or bad news about someone else having trouble. That's why your local news ALWAYS has something about children getting raped, people getting kidnapped, soldiers being beheaded, detah, destruction, murder, pain, sadness.. and they get a lot more damn ratings that way, society is sick in all honesty.
Notice positive news articles (not just on slashdot) never get as near the amount of comments as really bad news? an example from slashdot, when SCO shit comes up, or impending doom to linux comes up, there are near a thousand comments or more. Something about an advancement or something good, there arent as many posts, and the posts that are there are cynical posts most of the time, or how it isnt a good move, etc. with very little up posts.
Anyways, what they dont account for is the fact the Mac user base is very tiny. So you'll get a better concentrated result. However, the PC userbase is more than just windows, it can be any x86 based OS out there. and the userbase is a lot larger, so there is a harder comparison there. However, if they compared, say, linux users to Mac Users or Freebsd users to Mac users, I think it might be a better comparison than just comparing mac users to pc users, since pc users is a very broad statement.
I really cant begin to point out where this survey is wrong.
Slate, a Microsoft magazine urged users to use mozilla as well, however, I dont think this was a charitable request, instead, make users use this alternative, microsoft will sit back and watch as mozilla gets exploited by malware, make a big shit about it every time, (possibly even write their own as well) then come out with a version of IE that isnt exposed the the type of malware that mozilla is exposed to, and use choice marketing words to get people to download it (even buy it) Microsoft is gonna use Mozilla as a pawn in the browser wars to re-affirm their grounds in the Browser Monopoly.
That not all linux systems have to be built to a certain standard. LSB is only good for traditional, more server/developer/hardcore geek environments.
That's the problem with "Desktop" systems like SuSE or mandrake, they go by a standard like that.
you can build a system that just uses the linux kernel, but can have a whole different system setup than that of traditional linux. one that would fit the desktop better. I know the linux diehards will scoff and flame me for suggesting an idea like this, but for linux to make it to the Desktop, someone needs to make a Linux Desktop Standard and create an integrated system.
One good and bad example is beos. For the local user install, or safe install, it installs to ~/config/ as root and ~/config/bin is in $PATH Someone could make an installer that gives the user two options: Install systemwide (requires administrator password) Safe install/Local install
You can already do that in linux if you edit your bashrc, helps on remote systems where you're limited to your account. the system will setup however you tell the primary shell to set up.
Just a thought, and dont bother pointing out flaws, this is just half of the idea I have. maybe someone will pick up on it and improve on it, since that is the open source way.
the dust would be more damaging if the probe were statically sitting there, like absolutely still. or if the space craft were going against the particles. however, it's prollygoing either just a little slower or faster than the particles, so the speed of them hitting it is somewhere in the hundreds range to the thousand range.
this is just a move by the fcc to "relate to the public" specifically the internet community, the ones who protest against the broadcast flag the most, think he's gonna listen to you? no. Think he thinks you'll listen to him? yes.
Pretty much doing this to "make us understand and accept" the broadcast flag more than likely.
The first blog post is pretty much about the FCC itself, so he's prolly trying to get people to see the fcc as a buncha good guys who are trying to protect people from themselves and any questionable material that may make them question their corporate overlords and the government, and to ensure that we pay our dues to them as well.
I might sound paranoid, but just looking at the first post, it's gona be nothing but a propaganda blog to try to make those who read it go with what the fcc wants to do.
that wouldnt be good news for those who visit sites they dont want others to find out about. (think above the belt on this one) like say, a guy who wants to get engaged to his gf wants to go to a jewelry site to find a good ring and order it. however, knowing these sites that use scripts, the site would instantly be bookmarked. and if "liked" enough it might make it as the default homepage, which would be bad when his gf decides to use the computer. it would ruin the whole ordeal.
it shouldnt be an option by default, in fact it should be an add-on.
when you first read the article, that you thought they had come up with some new way to abuse old people? sadly, this can help the elderly who wander off, of course this could be prevented if the people who work at these places did their damn jobs right in the first place. This is another example of why I will never place my mother in a home, because I dont want her to spend the rest of her days being tagged like an animal in the wild and not given privacy, because the elderly are people too, just because their minds are going doesnt mean they arent people, I can see the advantages of this because people do get lost, but honestly, I dont think it'll help because if a staff member is gonna lose track of someone, I'm pretty sure they're gonna lose track of the screen that reports where these people are currently, and what happens if they wander off the grounds? will they just be ignored? or will someone else, in turn watch them? Would this also be a way for retirement homes to enforce prisoner-like contracts that dont allow people who live at these homes to even visit off campus, or even leave certain areas, like if they're in a yard and walk to a "no no place" in the yard, will they be reprimanded and restricted even more to how much space they can walk in? or will they be charged for how much they "roam" ?
these are all problems that can arise, especially with retirement homes, which are known to rip off the families of the elderly, or mistreat them. honestly I think this will onlycause for more abuse, but not just to the elderly, but to their families as well.
depends on what you consider low-end these days. or what these people consider low-end low-end might be a 433 mhz intel (like my computer) to them, they might have a p4 or the latest 64 bit AMD. so it might be fine on some machines, but I think yours and my definition of lowend is like a 66 mhz 486 with 16 mb of ram or less. or an ARM cpu or some embedded system.
of course there are the mini-itx systems that would make great mini-routers.
I dont think this has much to do with the internet.
Actually, I blame parenting, I read books whenever one interests me, I used to read them all the time to pass the time.
Thing is... My parents read to me. and that got me into reading, see, most kids, their parents will pump them out after 9 months and for 6 months give them some attention, then eventually grow tired of them, let someone else take care of them, and when they get old enough, sit them in front of the TV and let the TV raise them, then they wonder why their kids end up in trouble when they're in their teens.
There are seniors at my highschool that cant read past the first grade level. and if they do read past that, they mispronounce so many words. it's really sad, namely because the TV and media and money has raised them, their parents either dont give a fuck, dont know english themselves (I live in a mexican immigrant predominant area) or are bad parents in general.
I think the only reason I'm not as fucked up and illiterate as half the kids my age is because my parents used to read to me, and when I was in kindergarten, I could understand letters and words better because of that.
Reading is more important than you think.
Of course, this is also America, where most children's parents (both of them) have to work to make end's meat (yes, this is in the world's so-called biggest economy) so most parents dont have the time, though both of my parents worked, they actually took time out to parent us, not get home from work, sit back and watch TV, eat, bitch at the kids for wanting love and attention and going to bed. Like I have seen at some households.
I just think the internet era coincides with this. Yes, it is true I stopped reading books since I started into computers, needless to say, most books I found interesting I've already read and I'm not impressed with most books that come out today. If I see or hear about a book I find interesting, I'll read it.
What disturbs me the most about this survey is that it sounds like it's leading up to "HEY! no one reads books anymore, say, we can take them off your hands, we'll burn them and return the ashes to the earth, where they belong, then we'll resell them in digital format, a much more reliable, and economically friendly format! The Constitution is looking pretty old as well, it needs to be re-written in digital format and to today's standards!"
I so wouldnt be shocked if that ever happened eventually.
Looking at society's ways, Ray Bradbury's book, Farenheit 451 was pretty damn close to the truth.
they could make cloaking devices out of this material as well, cameras adjusted at the right directions and you could "see through" someone because like on the back, the camera would be facing front, on the front display, the camera for it would be on the back, same for the sides, etc.
well hey, I didnt end up doing that and the lady paid me $30 because she was so grateful, and how I had saved her system from the very brink (really, beyond the brink)
prob is, if every movie was made to good qualities, then eventually, ones we'd consider good would be considered shitty. and the really good ones would be just good..
the standards would simply go up.
also, the internet is not to blame, supringsly it was the MPAA that pointed this out a few days ago on the news, that it was the lack of movie ticket sales because people werent going out to the movies, and the dude did admit that that last year wasnt their best record for movies either. because most of them got poor ratings. this is all compared to 2001 and previous years before that that fared well. and he did include the I word somewhere in that as well, but he didnt press internet filesharing as the leading cause. at least he admitted that hollywood wasnt doing as well, and I agree, I havent seen a real good movie for a long time now and I'm beginning to wonder what the fuck is wrong with the studios and what are they smoking? good example would be the garfield movie, which over the last 3 years went through so many changes it's just another CGI model/cartoon character in a real world movie, which usually suck. (osmosis jones is a PERFECT example of this) it was gonna be all 3d, then semi-3d, but with a cartoonish look, and odie was gonna be 3d as well, but now they're just showing some people who claim to be the characters from the movie and a scarrgly ass looking dog that they say is odie.. oh and teh cg'ed garfield... honestly wonder how long until they just change that and put a real fat orange tabby cat in his place.
yeah, I agree, stop making shitty ass movies, and you might get more money. I know I like to go to the theatres to see a new movie I would like to see. beats getting shitty recordings off the internet (cant get them anyways, my connection and patience are too low.) when it comes to movies, I dont think there's too much of a threat of online pirating. however, they should really take a look into the places that get those recorded out of the theatre and sell them. I saw the second matrix film at this one place that had almost nothing but pirated DVD's and they even had shrek 2 before it had hit theatres. however, I went back to the indoor mall it was at and it was gone. places like those piss me off. and they're the ones who should be watched out for, but no, they have to target the easier target, the internet, because hey, normal people are pushovers, and if we play our cards right, we might just be able to get a chunk of power over internet users and the internet itself!
I dont think they're so much funded by SCO or M$ as the "researcher" is just a dumbass, and grabbed some figures and sloppily put them together, saw he had an interesting attention grabbing story and published it, regardless of being carefully looked at, not to mention he stretched some facts like it takes days to patch linux or any of the free unixes, which is prolly the longest delay for any opensource based patch. Also, he failed to mention how long it took M$ to update patches. I have a feeling this reearcher played with unix, got lost and stuck to good 'ol windows. and is a Microsoft apologist as well.
OH, there is one, but the chozo sealed it to prevent the phazon from escaping, and when the seal broke, the bounty hunter, Samus Aran destroyed the source of the phazon.
my personal record with dealing with someone's computer (they hadnt upgraded this, updated it or removed files since they got the computer is early '99) and I found 5,000 adware files 180 trojans, and 178 virii
after cleaning the system up of adware (this thing took 20 minutes to boot to the desktop because it was so fucked) it took 30 seconds to boot and with all that crap there was 100% disk usage (8GB out of 8GB) now it's 800mb/8GB I removed all the god damned adware, and trojans, virii and old games and programs that were in essence, useless as hell.
and just because those systems dont get as many virii as windows doesnt mean they're secure, just shows they're incompatible with the latest virus technology!
"Lion's Gate says it has no plans to oppose the practice." Because they already know they wont be getting any real profit anyways, the audience they target is already not going to buy it, but find pirated versions anyways.
then sex should be considered a sport.

It's just a rule of thumb with people.
look at the site it's on.

just the other day I was thinking how I could do something like this... all you need is each tty with its own $DISPLAY variable for X
