so far my experience with syllable has left a bitter taste in my mouth, not only did it lock up on startup, but left my machine hanging. (power button didnt even respond!)

of course maybe that was only a problem with the machine's hardware, or compatibility with it.. but still, even linux doesnt do that, nor does beOS or bsd or anything else I've tried..

I'd give it several more releases before trying it.

Thanks NASA, now you've thrown us 20 years behind again! not to mention you're now ending shuttle flights, of course the other Nations are happy with this decision, it means less US involvement in a space program they can evolve and take credit for.

Why dont we also stop sending probes out as well, since those are *SUCH* a waste of money as well NASA?

at this rate we might as well just go back to staring at stars through little $600 ground based telescopes. The only good telescope we have is going to be scrapped, even though it's still highly useful. when the James Webb gets launched, I'm gonna laugh when it fails.

  16. Playing Devil's Advocate on Ted Turner's Beef With Big Media · · Score: 1

Turner might not be saying this from a "sore former media conglomerate"
But from a economist point of view, he might have owned a lot of things, but I dont recall him being anti-competitive. (correct me if I'm wrong)
See, when he was in power, he had a chunk of stations and media, but he wasnt just the only one, others existed as well, and startups could starup when he was running the show.

Now, if you want to be a startup, ClearChannel will knock your ass off the planet, either by lawsuits, buyouts, or forcing you out in illegal ways (if you're a radio station, they'll get some useless station to overpower yours to where you can only broadcast for a few hundred yards.)
His qualm is ClearChannel, which owns just about everything in the media, they're the only ones. them and one or two others.
I think that's the point he's getting, it's not a competitive market anymore, it's now a shaped, controlled monopolistic market with no separate identities or companies. just one huge monster, and the consumer or the little guy has no say in what they do, and they can also use their great power to push propaganda the way they want it, at least in Turner's reign, it was all separated still.

  24. Waste of time and resources on PhoneGaim Brings Phone Calling To IM Users · · Score: 2, Interesting

This has to be one of the most useless apps I've seen.

first, it only works for lindows, you can get the source, but without some serious issues (I had to hack my makefile, and no prevail)

no documentation whatsoever, so you gotta guess the deps.

you could go with gaim-vv rather than this. this is just a waste, it cant connect to any other sip networks except the one run by lindows, and it can only communicate with other phonegaim clients, and it costs money to call a landline, not to mention the rates high for VOIP.
The last comment in the article should be edited out because the GAIM devels have zero involvement with this.

just dont bother with this, it's overhyped, only reason it's getting media coverage is because a company is behind the new features. gaim-vv is much better IMHO.

bottom line, phonegaim is a cruddy hack. dont bother with it.
