This is all nice and stuff but let's face it - Ham Radio is dead.
Although Ham was a popular hobby in the 1970s and 80s, it has been basically killed by cell phones and internet. The number of young people wanting to become Hams has drastically decreased and the only people still doing Ham are white-haired foggies from the Apollo moon missions and Cold War era.
Sad but understandable as a consequence of our technological progress.
I am all for showing sex and violence on TV but not when it is deviously smuggled inside shows billed "family entertainment".
And.. to those who say "change the channel", I have tried that as well. The sad fact is that there are hardly any alternatives because almost EVERY show is doing it. There are not many intellectually stimulating shows to watch - unless you want to watch PBS all the time.
I, for one, am glad that there is atleast someone holding the purveyors of dreck accountable - even if they go overboard sometimes.
IT industry is following in the footsteps of the Auto industry.
It started with outsourcing of Auto manufacturing jobs to Japan because they could build better cars cheaper. All that remained in the U.S. were few design jobs. This led to a decrease in in the number of auto jobs in the U.S. and a downward pressure on auto job salaries.
However, soon the manufacturing costs in Japan rose and they found they could serve their customer better and make their cars cheaper if they opened auto plants closer to the customer.
The result is that majority of Toyotas sold in the U.S. today are built right here by workers who get paid lower than before.
Sadly, all these efforts to revive them are futile.
Cell phone are small and becoming more advanced.
Lap-tops are powerful and becoming smaller.
PDAs are stuck in the middle. If they try to evolve in either direction, they end up becoming a cell phone or a lap-top. At $650 a pop, even a TREO 650 is too expensive for what it offers.
Most people who are serious about mobile computing and internetr-on-the-go will just buy a slim albeit expensive laptop.
Others who purchase cheaper, less powerful PDAs soon realize how cumbersome it is to use a PDA to just store some phone numbers and appointments when they can use their cell-phone to do the same. So, they end up leaving their PDAs in drawers at home collecting dust.
In our current electoral-college based system that favors two majority parties, a third-paty candidate's views - no matter how well thought-out - dont really matter.
My neighbor has the same great answers to these questions. Unfortunately his and David Cobb's chances of becoming President and putting these thoughts into action are about the same (i.e. zero)
We have to change the election system for all this to matter.
I applaud their spirit and all but the Romanians didn't accomplish much after all. You can buy model rockets that will go higher than 1000m.
The goal of x-prize is to reach a height of 100,000 m - about 100 times higher than what the Romanians achieved in their test flight. The flight has to be manned as well. They have a long way to go.
Star Trek: Voyager Intro
on
Saturn Hailstorm
·
· Score: 4, Interesting
If you watch the intro sequence of ST: Voyager, you will notice that, during one of the scenes, the camera slowly cuts through the cryslline ice particles that make up the rings of Saturn. They put in a sound-effect to show what it would feel like. I always liked that sound. It was like being bathed by sounds of thousands little dusty bells tinkling.
He has not been fired. He is just *portrayed*
that way in a Priceline TV ad to make the ad humorous.
Another thing that may be of interest to you is that, instead of cash, Shatner was paid in Priceline stock for being a Priceline spokesperson. This was because he did the deal during the heady dot-com days when getting paid in stock was the big rage. I wonder how he feels about that now.
May be it is just me but I hate that show with a passion. That crap is not funny.
Not to mention the fact that they go crazy with the laugh track.
The laugh track guy for that show must have itchy fingers because he cues in the canned guffaws after every sentence spoken. {huh huh ha ha ha} What a crap show.{hee hee huh ha ha ha}
No way it is in same category as the Simpsons.
{hee hee huh ha ha ha}
Unless you are a lay person, I don't understand what the big deal is.
If it was the hardware that got fried and they miraculously fixed that, I would understand but this was just a software glitch.
I routinely reboot and reprogram machines in our data-center that is 2000 miles away from me.
As long as all hardware components are working and there is connectivity to the machine, it doesn't matter whether the machine is a few miles away or a million miles away.
I agree. I, too, see this from time to time where people interpret the law "too literally" - and smugly think that can use technology to safely break what is essentially a social rule necessary for proper functioning of the society.
You cited cases where people are not actually breaking the law "as written" but they are breaking the "spirit" in which it was written.
Thankfully, I have not found this tendency among the various High Court and Supreme Court Judges. They do seem to fully understand the spirit of the law and will perobably take the appropriate actions to maintain that spirit.
By the way, I also see the opposite happen i.e. people trying to live up to the law too much.
For example, in my company, there are rules regarding Software Development such as requirements to produce various types of documentation. Sometimes I see clueless Project Managers going overboard with obsessively following these rules. They insist on a trivial 2-minute bug-fix going through 2 weeks of approvals and reviews and another 3-weeks of documentation changes. Instead of streamlining the process, the too literal interpretation of the rules ends up wrapping the whole process in red-tape.
Anyway.. Intelligent post. You didn't have to post as AC.
Geekiness is not about looks, it's an attiitude. If you take a smelly unkept geek, shave him and place him into a suit, you won't end up someone with a good appearance, you'll just end up with a clean geek in a suit.
I always wondered if the reverse is true, i.e., if you put a non-geek, alpha-leader type in stained geek clothes with unkempt hair, will their "jockness" still shine through?
Will people disregrad such a person as a geek or will they soon come to respect such a person because of the attitiude?
He probably bought, developed and sold some real-estate at a huge profit.
However, since he is only 38, most likely this guy is not a self-made multi-millionaire.
For example, Donald Trump is most often cited as the genius wunderkid who became rich in real-estate at a young age but even Donald Trump got there only because he was helped by his father. Donald's "first" multi-million dollar property (an apartment complex) was actually bought, developed and sold by his father who was also in real-estate.
Donald was just an observer on the sidelines. [read The Trumps: Three Generations That Built an Empire by Gwenda Blair]
This is not to say that you can't pull a Bill Gates and become rich in real-estate but dont give up your day job before knowing all the sides of a story.
Congo was made with a budget of $50 million and grossed $152 million worldwide.
Not to mention $38 million in video rentals..
Check out the link below.
Robert Bigelow gained his fortune from owning Budget Suites of America - a discount motel chain.
Only in America could someone go from renting rooms at 49 dollars a night to building a Space Resort.
Pretty Cool.

They need to update that.
At the 1990 Astronmy Conference.. And.. we would like to give credit to Mr. Wolz.. uhh.. Mr. Wolzz.. Mr. Wolzczka.. Aww. screw it.

People climb the Kilimanjaro everyday on their vacations.
Look up Google on hundreds of Kilimanjaro Vacation Climb Packages complete with transportation, hotels, hot dinners and a Satellite Phone.
I wish someone could set up a charity for me to do this. I'll take whatever plaque they want me to take.
Fucking stupid..
We are talking about the usefulness of Ham as a pleasurable hobby - not as a backup tool to use during an unlikey major disaster.

You can (barely) hear it on this ST: Voyager Audio Clip . It occurs at time index 1:08.
As reported previously on Slashdot.

After all this waiting you are telling me, that thing won't blow?
Well, that damn thing sucks!!
