This is fairly easy to disable. Set your date to some time in the distant future, then launch quicktime. You'll be greeted by the "would you like to upgrade" spiel. Decline their offer to upgrade, then reset your date & you'll never see it again (or not until after that distant future date is reached.)
Sounds like your problem lies with poor tech support rather than an inferior product - whilst I'm sure your problem is unique and traumatic to you, just from your brief description and my own experience with many faulty Hard Drives, I would first suspect your Drive being the root of your problems and a faulty drive is not something unique to an iBook.
Perhaps one day when/if drives become solid state, the failure rate will diminish, but presently, what with the fine tolerances involved in manufacturing Hard Drives, I'm impressed that they last as long as they generally do.
The correct nomenclature is: Boards with a CPU attached via a daughter board are called "Mother Boards" where as boards - like those found in all current Apple laptops and the iMac & eMac - with the CPU soldered directly to the board are called "Logic Boards"
If there's been a pinched power lead to one of the drives, usually to the CD, due to the ease of snagging it on the drive carrier. the power supply will soft reset immediately after power on if any of the wires are shorted to the chassis.
that's odd - I'm looking at the AppleCare terms & conditions for Australasia and written under exclusions is:

batteries, power adaptors on powerbooks and ibooks, or the refining or replacement of any external cosmetic plastic or casing;
even so I personally recommend getting extended warranty for any laptop for as long as you're using it. The cost of vertually any repair would be greater than the cost of the extended warranty.
