  1. Muscular dystrophy on UK Scientists to Create Embryo From Two Women · · Score: 3, Interesting

Having had my aunt die due to her muscle dystrophy (heart is also a muscle, remember?) I'm for one glad that research is done in the subject.

I wonder how long time it'll take until we can get rid of the genetic defects which we otherwise risk pass on.

I believe ICANN brought this upon themselves. Or at least the people responsible for the root DNS servers to be "owned" by USA. Somebody said "but USA invented the internet" as an argument that it's just and right. Another smart person said that germany invented the gas engine. So then shouldn't germany have the control of all cars? My point being, is that the operation of internet should be an international effort. There should be no monopolies on any part of the internet. This creates nice opportunities for companies like verisign to ask higher registration fees. Where does this money go? I can hardly believe any of it is used to find all the registerated "spam"-domains with false registration info. Or regulating the people getting screwed over by their ICANN-certified registrar who in the reality doesnt seem very ICANN-certified. No refunds...

  6. Legislation on EU Proposes Online Music System · · Score: 4, Interesting

I'm against this kind of unificated legislation. There're several reasons, one being that they will most likely try to base it on the American broad copyright.

The swedish copyright which I think is great, makes it possible for only items which reaches a "work of art" level.

This means silly stuff like cease and desist letters cant be copyrighted to keep them secret from outside parties except the legal advisor.

Now, other sources of cultural exchange such as the pirate bay would most likely also be forbidden. Where even "linking" to the source of copyright will be forbidden. I'm not against allowing artists a fair pay for their work. But there's still a thin balance between making a system which is good and a system which limits freedom to the point it's silly.

I dont want a system which allows companies to extort minors.

The law speciefies that the copyright holder must give the permission. Thus reading newspapers is entirely legal since we've got a "responsible publisher" of the newspaper. However, downloading the newspapers unpublished newsarticles is not. It's a method to protect their copyright.

Analyzers of this law has deemed it to be pretty toothless against piracy. The police themselves has announced that copyright crimes wont be prioritised. It's not even clear if they will investigate things further on invidual downloaders/filesharers since they consider this a crime which will not be a jailable offence. Most likely a smaller fee like for speeding or parking ticket. But we'll see what the antipiracy groups comes up with before we know anything for sure.

In this type of diabetes the immune defence attacks the cells of the body. However, transplanting cells to the body would most likely cause a similar effect and this would only be partly effective.

A few years ago I went through a research project (Im type 1 diabetic) where the beta-cells (insulin producing cells) were put into an inactive status using cell supressing-drugs. This proved to make it so they survived much longer then the rapid "killing" of the beta-cells seen in most bodies at the time your immune-defence starts attacking these cells. They even kept producing insulin several months longer then they would if I didn't take these drugs.

Hopefully one day we'll find a way to cure diabetes. Im hoping myself that I'll be able to keep myself healthy, keep my eye-sight, feet until they find the solution.
