Nothing new here. Slashdot as a whole seems that way. It wants some sort of vindication that the gpl is valid, and c+d letters go flying. However when other companies, such as members of the **AA are involved, the crowd screams bloody murder. How dare these corporations excersize their right ? There goes my karma

We were talking about this at work the other day. The conclusion that we came to was that because the bank make so much money, that this sort of fraud is a small breeze on a sunny day. Most banks in Canada are pumping in billion or so in profits a year. Its not worth them spending more money in order to educate their customers. Even if they don't have fraud insurance, they write it off as a loss. So, yes of course they don't really care that much. It would cost them more, if they actually tried to do something.

Maybe if the US was smart (for once), they could send up stuff to the moon, before anyone got there. That way they could back up the claim. Now, if Bush was smart enough, he would have done the same thing in Iraq. Bury some WMD's, so that they would be found. I feel sorry for Colin Powell.

It seems that my router sucks ass. It shaves off almost 2 megs. I was comparing the speed between the cable-modem and the wired pc, and through the router, (cabled, not wireless). The trouble is also that the router wont let me change the antennae on it, so its never that simple. Its an old belkin, I wouldn't mind upgrading, but new tires for my car will win out, over speed. I can live with it for now. ;)

  12. Security on The Doom of Wired Peripherals · · Score: 2, Informative

I like the fact that you can go wireless. Great, however, nothing beats a wire for security. Not too say that I don't use my wireless laptop, however sometimes having a wire upstairs makes sense. The other part is that my cable provider has upped our standard to at least 7megs/700k. Thats way faster then my wireless can handle. But being able to print anywhere in the house... yay!!!!!!!!!

I think that is the reason for cables. I would love to be able to keep up, but when the cheap fibre to the house thing happens, my poor ole wireless wont keep up. The upgrade path is too steep. Maybe ain a few more months I will upgrade to something quicker.

  14. Re:Free cooling on Does the NSA Need More Electricity? · · Score: 1

Geo-thermal heating and cooling, also is the same idea. Just not using lakes as the source. I read about this in a magazine, and seem excited. The cost seems a little steep, however, it is an investment. It will pay for itself over time. It will reduce your heating/cooling costs by 2 thirds. Others have commented on the fact that the lakes will eventually heat up, which is a bad thing. I don't see a way to prevent this. Unless you can dump cold back in the winter. However, on a small scale this would be negligible. I think that if you are looking for alternative methods to heat and cool, there are many different ideas. I think relying one type to manage the a/c problem, is how we got into this mess in the first place. ( I haven't read about the lake tech tho. so i might be talking out my ass). The trouble is the idea that this is so cheap that there is no need too conserve. I have set my a/c in my house to 79. Sometimes I think that its warm inside, but then I go outside and come back in, and its much nicer. Now if there was a way to beam some of the excess heat into space then we might have something....

Unfortunately, none of this while do much to help. If there are sensors in a building, and Joe Terrorist wants to bomb it. They either throw a bag full of bombs into a room, then set them off, or he will do it with a suicide run, which there isn't much you can do about that. If he walks into store.. the alarms will go off, and so will he. Or a car-bomb next to the building all-together. The point of terrorism is striking fear. If they strike in a market or in the middle of the street, that is all they need. If they can manage to get a building, then thats just 'icing on the cake' as it were.

It comes down to how the US perceives sex has being a harmful thing. The sense when Jacksons boob hit the world, we were saying up here, what is the big deal ? Yet all these massive fines were being passed onto people. What happens when someone suggests that we go and 'eliminate' the president of Venezuela? Nothing. We gasp that this guy (name is escaping me), could say this. But nothing happens.

When one of our more interesting, and influential leaders , Trudeau passed away, his wife and his Girlfriend were there. Not to mention the kids from both mothers. We knew that he messed around, but he got the job done. Bush isn't getting the job done. Kinda sad what this crazy loon haws done to the rest of the world, and that there is no way to deal with this.
