Earthsea books aren't limited to the USA.
The trilogy is a story of a wizard Ged from childhood to old age (I can't remember if he dies in the end though). They take place in a world composed of islands and floating 'raft' cultures. There are also dragons.
The earthsea books are excellent, at least volumes 1 and 3 (of 3) were.
The books are really quiet, almost spiritual, the characters' journey's being internal and not just external.
I really couldn't see how they could be filmed, and certainly not as action TV (which is what I got out of the trailer).
I gave A Wizard of Earthsea to a friend to read as they claimed that they read alot of sci-fi. They couldn't read it having been raised on shite like Battlefield Earth and Robert Jordan.
The comic book starts out excellent and remains so for quite a while but then it rapidly degrades into adolescent silliness. Unless the second part (which I haven't read) is a major improvement, Cameron will easily do it justice.
Its' freakin' nonsense like this, jokes I've heard hundreds of times, that makes me shake my head and say, "Why, why do I browse at -1?". I don't even mod anymore.
I completely agree with you and have thought that as well. Sort of like blogging only in short films, re-edits of films, or feature length films. You can actually do it now at home, you just have to learn the software.
The only thing which may prevent it is Hollywood having some law passed that prevents the general public from owning the terabyte hard drives you need for that kind of film. It won't be banned because they don't want home movies, it'll be banned because they think they'll all be used by pirates (hence the ipod banning law thats up now in the US).
Back on topic, I've done some of the 3D animation, and its amazing. You are right, in a few years when we can reneder a realistic person in seconds on screen, then we might see a proper prequal film.
I went to a club tonight with some buddies (Thursday but its Canada Day and so its' a holiday) and danced with some girl I walked up to. I kept up the conversation for some 10 minutes but it never took off. I'm inclined to think it was her but also, I think, I didn't know how to run with the situation. Yes, I read slashdot.
Worst case I had was I introduced a buddy to a group of other guys at the local pub, we all used to hang out alot. He spent the next 1/2 hour prooving he was intellectual by discussing how Nietche's philosophy was really the basis for the NAZI ideals. I was left desperately trying to change the subject and eventually gave up and went out to get food.
The BBC is reporting that Ray Bradbury, a sometimes brilliant science-fiction writer is furious over Michael Moore's use of his Book name Fahrenheit 451 to name his far left wing propaganda film: Fahrenheit 9/11.
What makes the story so offensive is that Bradbury apparently contacted MM's company over six months ago, was promised a return call, and MM only bothered to return the favour now, on the eve of his film's release, when it's too late to change the film's name. So MM, who portrays himself as anti establishment and anti-corporation, because of the crooked things they do, is apparently every bit as crooked as those he claims to expose.
Its a disappointment everytime another human inevitably turns out to be fundamentally self-serving, even those whose politics you don't agree with, but you'd give them respect as you'd like to believe they are out to raise the level of respect every human gets in this life.
What you say is excellent, I wouldn't have thought of that.
But by posting this question to/., and by being able to show a record of his attempts at fixing the problem, he should be off the hook. He can point to this story as a time-stamped description of his stopped efforts. The the blame would shift to his boss.
They [the droids] memories are wiped by the good guys so the bad guys's can't read them and find out where the two Love Child's of Anakin were hid. Its obvious.
Your Assignment Soldier: Watch for the set up in the next "movie".
Shakespeare is brought into the future where he takes a literary class on his own work.

www.boingboing.net, great blog/culture site. Kinda an alternative to /. in the blogosphere.

It made me chuckle.
Was your professor Asian or was he a professor of Asian studies?
I hope his visit to our planet was interesting.
Menace was worse. But AotCs almost gives it a run for it's money.

It stars a Singing John Travolta, right?

Where did I go wrong if you don't mind me asking.

But I could be wrong.
They are thinking of passing a ton of copyright legislation, and apparently, some of it is DMCA like.
Shut Your Mouth!
Check 'em out, they're hilarious.
But I'm sure its been asked for before...
Thats Canadian content, we don't have enough fully Canadian TV shows so they fill in the time with that.
(Warning: Slightly off topic but on par with parent comment on indiscriminate media reporting). This one rather surprised me as well.
And given the past showings from the recent ST movies, I'd skip it if they skipped 11 and went straight to stardate 12.
FUNNY!

I was going to explain, but then, I thought, "why bother"? Star Wars is dreadful, 'nuff said.
