  1. Is the crack out at large yet ? on Microsoft Invents A 'Play-Once Only' DVD · · Score: 1

C'mon! you've got to be kidding me. When will they learn the lesson that, the strongest copy protection as good as how low the desires of a determined mind can go. If you encrypt a media and leave it in my hands for as long as I desire, I will find a way to circumvent the copy protection. It is this simple. Unless this is like thse, open the wrapper and media deteriorates slowly kind of physical protections, it is doomed to be cracked by DVDJon or alikes.

In my opinion, this idea is in the can before it is out of the door from M$.

Is it me or are the Dutch marching towards the most Orwellian society in the world ? Gawd... Regardless who has access to this data, this is bad. One person accessing this database is one person too many.

  3. raising storm in a glass of water on CentralNic Enables uk.com Wildcard DNS · · Score: 4, Insightful

I am sorry but if I own a domain, like myself.com, I have every right to do whatever I want with the third level subdomains unless I clearly declared somewhere in my terms of service that, I will abide and governed by the same rules that applies to tld dns providers like verisign.

typing fskjljg.com to your browser and typing fskjljg.myself.com are two different concepts. For the first one, no one claimed ownership by paying money and verisign in the recent past, decided, they can do anything they want. So they basically claimed rights to every unpublished domain name available.

Whereas uk.com in this example, claimed stake at this domain by paying anregistering this domain name. If you are hitting their server to access another and you have the wrong information, they can do whatever they wish, as you, the surfer, chose to visit a webserver (not a DNS server only) hosted by them.

I am not really thrilled how the two concepts put in the same category to ruffle feathers personally. Must be a slow news day at the register.

  4. This must be shooting self at the foot on TiVo OS Update Adds Content Protection · · Score: 1

Tivo, until now, was a nice and consumer friendly service despite the small tricks they pulled out of their sleeves like "must watch commercials" or product placements on recordings etc. but I took it as survival tactics in the marketplace. And they were livable with.

But when they started sucking up to hollywood, whiich ithe main reason why people bought tivo or PVRs, they crossed a boundary and started to become annoying.

I think it is time to tell customer to tell tivo, screw you and send it to the list of failed companies with great ideas, who just could not execute the idea well.

  5. Re:Business and Government on Another Round of HP Layoffs · · Score: 1

Maybe it is time to face the hard facts the US counterparts have to live thru for those working for HP in Europe. It must have been nice to commandeer 8 weeks of vacation time every year, whereas an average US worker has less than 4, and salaries comparable if not better than US employees of the same companies. But when it comes to lay-offs, why do they or their elected officials think that they must be protected ? What is good for the goose should be good for the gander as well.

  6. Virus for UNIX ?? on Ready For the Big Mac Virus? · · Score: 1

I am not extremely familiar with macosX but I know that the underlayment is FreeBSD and I do not see how an effective virus/worm strain can be created for this infrastructure. After all, macosX does not require you to run everything as root to be able to function properly. So unauthorized access to the OS will be quite next to impossible without explicit permission of the computer's user by typing the root password when asked.

If it was that easy to make the headlines, or destroy the unix based systems, I believe Gates/Balmer et al, would have lauched a clandestine team of virus developers to attack the Linux running computers instead of paying Gartner, undisclosably high sums of money to provide proof that Windows is more secure than Linux. Don;t you think ?

Technology belongs to this world not to the "*other*" side IMHO.

  11. Feel good to be a UNIX admin right at this moment on Unix servers up 2.7%, Linux servers up 35.6% · · Score: 5, Interesting

Well kinda-sorta. I have devoted last 13 years of my 40+ years life to be a full time computer systems admin, after getting my bachelors and masters degrees in EE and working 7 years in the electronics assembly and manufacturing trenches. I knew that there was an ulterior motive to go in the UNIX direction rather than windoze path subconciously but did not know exactly why and how I ended up being a UNIX guy.
During the last few years, certificate mills creating an army of windows admin drones, who can only click a predefined sequence of location on the screen with their mouse and passing as "system administrators", I tend to think that, certificate watching management types are going to hire more and more of these admin lookalikes and increase the share of windows in the server room which would make a demise of my careerpath. When I see articles like UNIX/Linux gaining ground on the server room, it makes me breathe a little easier. I do not want another career change, even though, after a week of skiing in Colorado, doing something like that for living is tempting :)

I am talking about consolidation here. You consolidate your PDA with your phone. Fine. It was a wise move not to carry two separate address/phone books. It was vital and trivial decision for the business minded. But Music on my phone at the same time in return for a M$ DRM installed on my phone ? I don't know how'bout you but I do not feel my contacts staying secure after some piece of micro$oft code placed in my phone.
Obviously this unti is going to be targetted at the college kids but, how many college kids have the money to throw away on DRM'ed song downloading anyway.
In my opinion, this is going to be another one of Nokia's flops.

  15. RedHat and variants for me. on Which Linux for Professional Admins? · · Score: 1

As RedHat is the most well recognized name in the Linux landscape, most employers choice will be on this end of the linux spectrum, whe time comes to deploy a server. Even though SuSE has the backing from an industry giant (or at least once it was a giant) like Novell, RedHat still has the squatter's rights to the Linux. I resemble the relationship between RedHat and Linux to that of Kleenex and cleaning paper tissues.

Hence, as linux looms in my corporation's near future, I am running a Fedora Core 3 box on my desk to play with, to stay on the legal side of licensing with RedHat. We already have a a couple of RHEL operated boxes on the production floor by the way. So, the choice is not actually much of a choice in its full meaning.

I am not sure about you but I am not buying this half-hearted OpenSolaris movement.

Story never changes. AOL is the same behemoth despite however many pieces you divide or adjoin it. It is just for a Wall Street only show. Nothing for you and me, the Joe/Jane the customer in it. 22. Does it really matter ? on Longhorn's Copy Protection Standard · · Score: 1, Interesting

Is anybody actually buying a CD anymore ? Last CD I bought was a gift to a 4 years old son of my friend and this was about 7 years ago. I think the CD thing will go wayside soon and this point of adding DRM to the plastic will be moot.

Also, how is this different from DRM on downloaded tracks ? It is either microsoft or apple or real media or some other entity protecting the tracks against piracy.

If you complain about not being able to crack the DRM, well, you may have to use and alternative OS to look into the DRM techology to circumvent it and this does not make a big showstopper for anybody who had this idea in mind.

    Just my opinion.
