  1. Why tivo only on Hollywood and NFL Fight TiVo · · Score: 1

Don't they know it is not the casual user of tivo they need to be worried about but the hacker type, who has the utmost capability of circumventing any protection and if necessary, building their or building their own Tivo-like system and do what they are trying to circumvent and dump the recordings on to p2p networks for widespread sharing ? When will they learn not to fight the system ?

It looks like the CIO in the original message, dumping everything on the shoulders of the employees cost-wise is a pretty short sighted and wsounds like he/she won't last any longer than his/her sight.

Yes the IT personnel should be dedicated but in the face of contracting rate cuts, salary reductions and layoffs we suffered, if they expect me to foot the bill for things that that may end up as a responsibility to me (think about 2 year cell phone contracts) should I get laid off, does not make much sense.

As the wisemen at one time said, you harvest what you sow earlier. If they do not provide facilities for support they have to suffice with longer response times.

glad to see that somebody other than me also saw the light. Being booksmart or testsmart does not mean being street-smart and most of the time means the opposite, i.e., being totally out of touch with the real world. Hey if there are 24 hours in the day, the time you spare to study for the tests, you are not facing the problems of the real world as we all know real world's most bizzare problems do not make their way to become the certification test questions.

What I love the most out of all these certifications is RHCE (red hat certfied engineer) yeah, somebody study for tests on RH 7.0 about 2 years ago. But, on the paper, they are CERTIFIED. If an employer is giving more value to the piece of paper generated by prometric certificate mill than usnderstanding what I am actually capable of, I might as well stay away from that employer as it is the dead end of the road for me.

While most people in Chine is on the border of (or may be right in the middle of) poverty in US standarts, what do they expect from this deal. Sell these people digital songs $1-a-pop ?

More the name gets discussed among the geek squad (a.k.a. /.ers) more publicity they get from the not-so-clever mainstream media, authors of which think "oh, since their name is out there so much, they must have a good point in discussion"
Playing ignoramus against these clowns is the best strategy in my opinion.
These guys are like the talentless idiot who draws Boondocks. Nobody knew neither him nor his strip, until the day he attacked the Sean Hannity in an anti-war interview, where Hannity was absent. The next day, in his program, Hannity chewed him out but he succeeded at his goal. He was known by so many millions of Americans in the course of a few minutes.

I think having children is one of those fundamental things in life that creates a paradigm shift in peoples' motivation. wondering if you or your company have ever been on the defendant side of the courtroom as a result of discrimination case ??

I don't think any judge or in an extreme case, any jury would look warm to a company who prefers a childless employee over one which is a parent.

It is all in the finding the work-life balance. I do not have any kids but have 3 dogs and a cat which require attention almost as much as a child needs (some may disagree on this but this is my opinion) and I have been in the IT field for longer than 10 years with no employer of mine complaining about lack of performance so far.

But if one is working for a slavedriver organization who always demand unrealistic deliverables, having a child or not having one does not make much difference down the road. If you do not have a child, the rate that you are working to please your slavedriver will burn you off sooner rather than later.

These people like makers of Roku, in my opinion, lacks a business minded person on their board of directors, at least one very good example of this kind. Idea is good but marketing it half-baked is not going to do this company any favor. On contrary, they have a long way to back paddle from this point on. So, it might as well wait until we are ready (to fill our pockets) it had better be Micro$oft spearheading the desktop effort.
