Yeah, it's semi-childish. But that's the point. Just something fun to relive the old days. We have Monopoly, we break that out occasionally. We may pick up Life, then pass it on to her niece.

Besides, didn't Life have some way to "choose your destiny" or something? That sounds kinda fun.

People don't mainly blog for others, they usually blog for themselves. So they don't have to tell the same "what I did on vacation" stories to each and every family member. But others can get some enjoyment out of them, too. Your family can all read about your travels, interests, what the kids are doing, etc. You get the advantage of only needing to tell the story once, they get the advantage of telling all their friends in their own social circles about how "my nephew has his very own web page on the Internet, see here?".

It's fun for everybody. I hate when people take blogs too seriously.

Would it make it faster to have WiFi? Probably. But let's be honest... power crews don't absolutely need access to HQ-database maps, to set poles from a staking sheet and work order. It's done every day of the week where I live. Just issue a replace/repair work order, some RUS standards, and tell them to have at it. Many utilities have contract crews that do their primary buildouts. I'm sure New Orleans is big enough the city utility is not doing their own rebuilds, anyway.

But this "free" wireless has some strings attached, I'm sure. Who would pay the distributor of the equipment for their wireless Access Points and Subscriber Units? Who does the labor for the installs themselves? Who provides the backbone-pipe? Just because Nagin says the businesses won't have to pay for WiFi, doesn't mean everything involved is totally FREE.

Someone is paying, that's fur sure.

I agree, fair is fair. But /. has been pretty good about making a big deal over "flaws" in Firefox, lately. It wasn't too long ago that I recall reading here almost once a week about some "new security vulnerability" in Firefox.

Of course, I'm bitter about IE this week anyway, after trying like crazy to get IE to work with Outlook Web Access, for my wife in her office at home. Ran every update Microsoft asked for, searched every Knowledge base article I could find. No help. How did I resolve it?

I switched my wife to Firefox, and it works just fine. One of her department heads (after telling them about how we fixed 'her email problem') basically replied "that's what we use at home, too. It's better and more secure, anyway."

Microsoft better watch out. Like it or not, Firefox is creeping up on them, little by little.

Dragon Quest VIII is coming out soon, that one will be fantastic. Turn-based RPGs, once you get sued to them, are a very acceptable alternative to text games, for those who want a non-realtime gaming experience, for their busy (or often-interrupted) schedules.
