And how long did they waste away as game testers making $10 an hour? I never see Junior programming jobs in the gaming industry advertised. Yes, maybe they are given to testers, but what do you expect someone who is a skilled professional programmer to do in order to "get in". Work as a tester for $10 an hour? That may be practical if you are like 20 years old. I hear about the practice of converting testers to programmers in the gaming world all the time, but wouldn't it be more effective just to hire good programmers?

How long did you waste away in college PAYING IN money only to come to slashdot and complain you couldn't break in? Seems like YOU made the wrong move. Its not more effective to hire junior programmers, they don't know shit about games. Like everyone else, they THINK they do, but they dont. You can teach programming, hell programming is easy, but you can't teach design and feel. Coming up through the ranks from within weeds out people like you who think they have the solution to everything.

Wait until they are 30 and have a family.

Ah, more assumptions. Man you're smart.

Nice borderline troll. Oh and yes, all companies care about profits, that is why they exist.

Well done. Nice mis-quote. You forgot to include "only" this time. I never argued that profits weren't a motive.

Damn, I wish you knew something. Nice posting history by the way. Here is a hint, if you are a failure as a troll it's time to go kill yourself.

Wow, just attacking the messenger now. Look, I'm sure you are frustrated because you aren't getting your dream job. Maybe you should change career paths. I know you went to college hoping to ride the dotcom bubble, but it burst. There aren't alot of tech jobs left. I hear home depot has plenty of attractive women working there. You should consider that.

And even if it is a troll, its a success since you responded.

No, in all scenarios all I have to do is point, click and reboot. Always has been always will be.

Your problems are trivial in the scope of the whining of the grandparent post:
    1. How would a company decide not to support its own video card? Since ALL flavors of linux are generally unsupported, this is a pretty silly argument to make anyway. Drivers shipped with my hardware. If I choose to change my "setup" after that, I have that choice, but I don't blame others.
    2. Another silly notion. I already have drivers that work. I don't require continued support. And since we are in the games section talking video cards, once about every 3 years I will need a new one anyway, even if your impossible situation of a hardware manufacturer NEVER shipping working drivers became reality.
    3. "You speak from experience?" Maybe because you are a linux fanatic and contact them to whine about linux support. But thanks for the anecdote, good evidence.
    4. Well, since you don't know me, this is clearly a sad last ditch effort to attack whatever. My main gaming install of Windows 98SE has been running since 2001. Not a single virus or intrusion. But once again because you live in fantasy land you know more about me than me. I might upgrade to XP soon, but I don't have a reason. My "setup" works. Notice I came here to make fun of whiners. Once again, closed-source = happy. Open-source = complaints and whines followed by illogical, fanatical defense.

Sounds more like Open Source is a PITA to deal with. When I need to update my closed-source drivers for my closed-source operating system to play my closed-source game, all I do is double-click, reboot and I'm off. And it being inferior in terms of performance is not a sacrifice I have to make. Instead of blaming the player, maybe you should blame the game.

Weird, you described a problem that doesn't even exist. The "gaming industry" (as if there was one way of doing business) does cultivate its own talent. Yes, to get a senior position you have to have shipped titles, but junior programming jobs do exist. They do scripting, or menu implementation, or other such work. Hell, I know guys who started as testers with NO programming knowledge who knew games and were sharp enough that they got hired at developers as designers and learned the programming on the job. Guess what? They haven't quit despite the hours because they actually like their jobs.

But I guess in your simple view of the world, ALL companies only care about profits. Damn I wish I knew everything.

It is actually quite appropriate, and more than the reviewers seem to know. I picked Spider-Man 2 up on a tip from a comic book nerd friend (the kind that hates everything) and I found my favorite part is the races. It lays out a path for you to follow within a certain amount of time. It records the time for you to try to beat later. Some are super hard and I probably won't ever beat them. The races require complex button presses to complete since they require alot of moves together, swing-wallrun-orbit-swing sorta like kickflip-manual-grind, etc. I'm really diggin it, even more than the story.

So in short the "streams of button combinations to pull" fast times in races is there. I don't think the reviewers were playing these that much since they seem to only get dismissive mentions, and thats too bad. I really havent felt this way about being challenged for my gaming skill since THPS2. I played so late last night that I was late for work this morning.

I think Nintendo has the right idea. According to Yasuhiro Minagawa (PR boss of NCL) they plan to, "offer an experience that can be enjoyed by adults, children, or women." I think that sort of thinking will work well in both Japan AND America. Rumor is that they plan to unveil this console, dubbed N5, at E3 2005. I know for sure that all the women I know will enjoy being targeted specifically since they belong neither to the group of adults or children. That's exactly the kind of thinking that will definitely turn them on to games, and Nintendo's offerings in particular.

The AC alledges that it has no head-to-head mode, so there's that. What all Xbox games are now is Live-aware. This allows players on Live to see what game you are playing, even if it is a single player game, and send you invites to play with them. Its rather nice.

Call it a technicality or loophole if you will, but basically all Xbox games are now online, at least in this form. Its a nice requirement if you ask me, but Im sure some slashbot will find a way to hate on it.

Pretty accurate, and to that I'll just add:

Consider that Wind Waker broke records for pre-orders, but didn't break any records for sales. That is to say that the Gamecube market is set. There are X number of consoles out there and a high percentage of those are going to buy all the nintendo games. This is good for Nintendo, but bad for third parties and consumers who want something outside of what nintendo offers. Compare with Xbox, with its Y number of console owners who are open-minded and might try a new game if it is on sale for $20-30, even though it doesn't say Nintendo on it. Xbox also has its hardcore gamers who already know which games are coming out and when, but the publishers and stores obviously feel they can get some random walk-up impulse sales as well on Xbox. Ship more units, ship more titles, it just might pay off on Xbox.

And of course it will pay off on PS2, there are plenty of those out there so its not even worth mentioning.

For example, Gamespy does not list a ship date for R: Racing Evolution, nor does Ebgames.com list it for sale, though I can buy both new and used copies for the Xbox and PS2. I could still be wrong, but evidence says I'm right.
