  1. Side note: artists still screwed... on EFF, PubPat Each Seeking Some Patent Sanity · · Score: 1

    Quote from the article:

    Clear Channel CEO Brian Becker....

"...we will not conduct licensing conversations in public or via the media. Nor will we put artists in the middle of those business negotiations -- or try to hide behind them as we negotiate."

Fo course not; we own everything the artist says or does and we don't need jack from them to do with their creations as we see fit.

Am I the only one that reads it that way? Sounds like Mr. Becker forgot to have PR review his statment!

(Since you probably didn't rtfa, the clear channel patent is over live recording being available right after the concert, and they are attacking artists selling CD's of their the concert you just saw. I suppose the dead and phish have prior art here, as they allowed fans to tape the concert, who then started trading tapes after the show).

I agree with the first poster; Enterprise is to me the best Star Trek to date.

Mostly, because it's real. I watch the stories and I can acutally believe that it is us, and how we would react. No generic "we don't use money anymore", or "there are no poor", etc.

My favorite episode was from the second season I think. Trip meets a race with 3 sexes, the third are slaves to the other two, bought and sold. He finds out they are just as smart as the other two sexes. So he does the "moral" thing, and teaches "it" about the world, and it has a desire now to be free. Of cource when it has to go back to it's own ship, it kills itself because it can no longer live with the pain of knoweldge that it is a slave.

Archer calls in Trip, and instead of the Hollywood ending that one day this 3 sex race will understand, he tells him because he didn't follow orders, two people were killed - the slave and the unborn child. On top of that the couple the slave was with won't likely get to have children now, as the thrid sex is rare and they won't be assigned another slave.

Somehow I can't see that story on the origional or TNG.

Now that it is open source, fedora, gentoo, and debian users can install it, altering the source if needed.

It's not about "i want to use linux", it's about tearing down the walls around software development that have been built up in the last 20 years.

I'd love to see Apple hit this guy with a DMCA suit. It would be a great case for the EFF, just like the DeCSS case, to take to the courts.

Apple, rather than fight the hacks, should look into why they are written in the first place and address the missing features. No one hacks something that does everything they want.

Some hardware security in place too, again all the tech needed here exists and is in use now. Hell, a well designed tamper-proof case would do most of the work, then make it run off of and internal battery/UPS system.

A plan! You don't do everything at one in a major system, you do peice at a time and make sure there are backups for everything. AKA paper ballots printed out for at least the next 5 years while the tech is worked on would be a good start.

Most important: independant *open* review. The specs and code for this system should fall under the freedom of information act anyway. If you feel that is asking too much of your company, then please kindly turn down the multi-million dollor rfp.

Blaming the state of the game market on mod chips is 100% bs. Thier own numbers would tell you it's not going to have an affect. An after market addon that gets a 10-20% install base is *awesome* - and we are talking about an addon that requires some degree os electronics hardware hacking? I would be amazed that *working* modded consols account for 5% of the number sold.

I have an unmodded Xbox, bought when they first came out. I have managed to buy 4, yes only 4 games for the system. I am an avid gammer, so it's not that I don't want to play games - it's the cost of a decent game runs near $70 bucks. Screw that. And there are even that many decent games to start with.

I have a TiVo that I'm not willing to dust the case of for fear of breaking it. But the Xbox? Time to mod it I think. I want the "home media option Xbox" so I can play any format known to man on my home system the Xbox is part of. A brief search will show you more XBox's are modded to be a home media station than play burned games - you can't burn a crap game into a good one after all.

If chip mods were as bad as they are being made out to be, M$ would be shutting down the modders in a lawyer blitz - they have the DMCA after all. It's obvious how easy it is to get a mod chip though that this is not happening. Maybe M$ knows that using the DMCA this way is a fast way to have a court throw out the DMCA; I can't think of a better example of why the DMCA is bad. Bob buy Xbox. Bob adds mod chip. Bob play home movie of daughter's first grade play. Bob does 25 years in a federal pound me in the....

Now, if you said mod chips are killing the RIAA, I'd say well what do you think the media is everyone is trying to play? Bob's home movies only take you so far...

I also think Python has provided a much better standard library, a much better OO interface, and worlds better syntax (the last took a bit to get used to, but no I curse any languare that thinks it needs unless semicolons!).

Python is commonly thrown in with Perl and PHP, I guess because it starts with a P, but really it's on the grounds of C++ and Java. And yet, one cannot ignore it's a scripting language still that somehow runs like a compiled language. And no core dumps to boot!

If arcades continue to use a bussiness model from 10+ years ago, and not adapt, then it's no wonder why they will fail.

First of all, they need to work with makers of cabinets (after all their fate is tied) and design systems that play more than one game. Put a DVD drive in the thing for god's sake so when game X is past it's prime, your not buying a new machine just a new DVD. Also this would allow an acrade to run several copies of one game across several machines, so when the demand for one game was high they could easily scale to meet that demand.

Games need to also provide what lacks in the home market. All the frills need to be there, like force feedback etc. While most games will have no troble with a standard cabinet (which standard could still be per maker), those that go for a cockpit or bike you ride need to be there as well but should still not have the software hardcoded into the system such that another game can't be run on it.

Last, arcades need to understand multiplayer is big; really big. Networking the cabinets into a lan so that several can play in the same game at once would be great as well. We can all play two player at home, many of us 4, and most can even network a consol with a friends now. A game is more fun with a friend, and even better wwith a bunch of friends.

If arcades adapt they will be around for sometime to come; people like to have fun after all.

And while alot of lic'd games suck... alot of games suck period. Most games today suck when you consider how many games there are released eaach year to how many of those can even get a passing rating from most review sites. So to say "Most lic'd games suck" is misleading, really you should say "Most games suck". And contrary to popular belief, it's not an all or nothing thing. Hollywood will not be invloved in every game from here on out, nor will it be absent. Nor will hollywood doing one game stop another from being developed. It's not a zero-sum game.
