Not so fast on the "not so fast on the 'not so fast' ". The original question was: can anyone take a project, repackage, rename and distribute (e.g. with added support), as long as one says: "this is a repackaging and renaming of Project Y, get complete source at www.Y.org/src". Is one required to distribute source that one hasn't changed?
And while I'm at it... Not so fast on the sig of the "not so fast on the ''not so fast on the 'not so fast' '' ": is there some new rendition of Eye of the Beholder in existence, preferably not a remake but a new story, preferably free (speech/beer) of course:) ?
Hm, you say child molestation is not equal to sex, but sort of contradict yourself right thereafter. I think a common error is in the assumption that sex with a young person must necessarily involve molestation. Now, if we're talking about a 10-year old, I'm under no illusion that sex (as commonly defined) would be a good thing. But what about 13 or 14? The line gets quickly very blurred, most especially when comparing different cultures with different levels of acceptance...
In any case, let me expose a wild theory I have: Child abuse and molestation wouldn't be (as much of) a problem if these people could get treatment. How about instead of pushing the issue further away, blocking it from view, we could recognize the problem, and let those who like being with children, be with children. Shock! Horror!
Yes I know it's somewhat of a paradox, but note that I'm not talking about the people who want to harm children. How about some kind of treatment center, where children and adults can meet and simply be together under close supervision. Add however many RFID tags and small cameras you want, I think the more the better. The point would be to create a place that encourages healthy socializing, as opposed to unhealthy socializing. All with the knowledge that the place is heavily guarded, thus creating a kind of security for the both the parents, the children, and maybe even the "subjects for treatment".
A person who actually harms children is a problem, not a person who likes children. And, people who want to harm children (or any people) should really not be running around freely, but I can't believe that those people are really as common as media would have us believe. The word 'pedophile' is a very hot potato for a headline, but it's starting to get a bit sour by now. My theory is that suppression leads to other or bigger problems. Compare with e.g. suppression of homosexuality. I also think that the definition of "harming children" may be a bit broadly defined. I especially think that raising a big ruckus and proclaiming that there automatically is a victim and a perpetrator, can do more harm that what originally ever existed.
Any people who actually know anything about these things, please reply.
Yes, and it already starts with the confusion about what a a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pedophile">pedo phile really is.
The problem is the slippery slope, as I see it. It's easy to go down it, but hard to cut back. Would there ever be a motivation to stop this kind of system?
Using company email to leak info is a really bad way of doing it. That could be compared to pointing out that "there's a cavity here!" while getting wchewed on by the lion. Here's the comprehensive checklist:
1. Stash information on personal storage device, ipod, usb-key-thing,...
2. ???
3. Profit!
The point being: if a company is looking after people leaking info, the they're not really doing that, but actually looking for the idiots that need to be weeded out. Anyone *serious* about leaking anything would at least *try* to hide their doings, right?
ok, time to stop typin methiks, too drunk to tell the difference between the arrow keys....
This is the situation in Finland too, as I understand it. I can download anything I want, but I can't upload copyrighted material. Thus I run no risk of anything as a comsumer, the copypirates are those who distribute.
The DS is a bit weird and quirky, but will likely prove to be fun in a lot of different ways, in unusual ways (as well as the traditional ways).
The PSP looks pretty solid. The wide screen, delicious graphics, ooh, wanna have that. I really do. But how long will that last? Not more than a year, I think. This gets especially exaggerated with the low battery time, since I don't feel like bothering if I know I'll run out, and I don't feel like charging all the time either.
That's the trick, there. I feel like the DS will be more "useful", while the PSP will be more "mindblowing". I really like that Nintendo doesn't blow my mind all the time. I've seen so much in gaming history by now that there isn't much to blow anymore, except my nose, which is reserved for Schindler's List, so it doesn't count.
... I... I didn't use Google back then *sob* , please, have mercy on my soul!
I did not know of the God that would spring forth from the magnificent egg of Phoenix, I was not aware of the history in making! I had never viewed the holy page before, and I have committed the ultimate sin. My soul, I forever cast away in repentence!
... no, please, no... no, not my geek license, please don't take it! No, please spare me!
Oh my god.. NO! Don't take my Linux install cd's! Ohmygooooood.... I'm forever doomed to Longhorn... *sob* *sob*
I'm pretty sure, after that person has done that for a few years, then magically discovers the return key... he's guaranteed to faint, then throw himself out the window.
Damn, these stupid April Fools' stories just keep on coming in. Now seriously, this sounds so whacked-out wicked, I'm almost considering going over just to check it out myself. Biologist slashdotters, what is this? Exessive gas buildup? Digestive problems? Too much beans?
Precisely. Anyone who claims episodes 4-6 are teh best movies 3v4h is merely caught up in nostalgia. They are fun to watch, even multiple times, but that's their primary quality. Episodes 1-3 continue in the same vein. Well, 1-2 at least. The reason people complain, is because Lucas somehow wasn't able to include magical nostalgia in the package. I wonder why...
I'm pretty sure that, when I buy the 1-3 dvd box, I'll be glad I have such a big story finally completed. One that I will enjoy watching from start to beginning. If you have expected the three new movies to be "the same", then you should've realized long ago that it's neither possible (nostalgia), nor a good thing (poor storytelling). It's not a tv series.
I think a lot of people here are watching the movies like they are serious, separate movies. I think of the bigger picture:
Act I - Introduction, presentation, nothing too heavy.
Act II - Development of theme.
Act III - Things go to hell, deep hit, everybody's in trouble.
Act IV - A glimmer of hope, and action ensues.
Act V - More, unexpected development. More trouble.
Act VI - Big resolution, grande finale.
It makes sense if you take the time to think about it. How else would you construct a grand story like this? Massive storyline and tons of info in the first act? How would you my-childhood-was-destroyed-and-I-have-to-complain type people design a movie in 6 parts?
I believe that, for example, Jar-Jar has his place as comic relief, simply because it's just the first act, for fsck's sake. The first act of a long story spanning the life and death of one character, you-know-who.
Oh my, I never thought reading through the Jargon file would ever prove to be useful...
But yes, it's somehow similar. I'm also constantly irritated by the delay function of my uni mailserver, that makes all mail arrive 30min to 6 hours later than they should. Really irritating when I need to register for something, and I can't activate the account. It's like the email world is connected together with modems. Thankfully I don't get any spam anymore though.
People around here always assume the DMCA and other laws are all-encompassing. Have you all forgotten the export of PGP 5?
Reverse engineer the software (almost) anywhere in the world except the US, and everyone's happy. Also, place some text: "US citizens may not download", which no-one will notice. Not to mention that Nikon in this case encrypts data generated by me and the subject I take a picture of, it is my data being input through the lens. I get the data back in digital form, except I cannot access it with the tool I need to access it with. Does the DMCA allow me to reverse-engineer the encryption in order achieve interoperability? I'm told it does. So tell me, where's the problem?
Use driver disks for better reliability. Nearly all my bought disks are toast by now, but I've found some ethernet card driver disks in my drawer (with nice glossy label in colour) that apparently are of better quality.
Ok, so I don't actually use it, except to build that s-ata driver disk that XP wants, since I'm unable to slipstream the driver into XP, since nLite refuses to work with me. So actually I don't need it, honest! (do not slashdot me with truckloads of old driver disks)
And while I'm at it... Not so fast on the sig of the "not so fast on the ''not so fast on the 'not so fast' '' ": is there some new rendition of Eye of the Beholder in existence, preferably not a remake but a new story, preferably free (speech/beer) of course :) ?

... messed up the clicky:
wiki article on pedophilia.

If that happened in Finland, it would be national news for a week.

But you can still block the IP's, right? How does SSL change anything except privacy?

Bah, I have a car phone. A phone with attached car.
I remember Magic Carpet having different 3D modes...
And on that note, what's up with the delete becomes backspace becomes delete crap. I mean, the keyboard has looked the same for decades now.
Yes.
I'm pretty sure, after that person has done that for a few years, then magically discovers the return key... he's guaranteed to faint, then throw himself out the window.
I always read it as "poison", especially in RPGs where it's supposed to provide healing.
