What was the main reason for the mass murder of dozens of people in columbine? Doom.

A total of thirteen people died in the incident, fifteen if you include Harris and Klebold in the total. That's not "dozens of people" by any possible stretch of the word.

As for your main point...violent video games did not cause the shooting. What did was the fact that the boys were ostracized at school and hated it so passionately that they wanted to get revenge for years of having been mistreated on a daily basis. The only people who have said that games had anything to do with the shooting were the "experts" that went on TV and tried to pin the incident to something so that society could feel better about itself. There has been absolutely no proof that games led to the shooting, and this makes a vast majority of your post complete bullshit.

There's a reason why the lawsuits that were filed against the makers of the games went nowhere - they just weren't the cause.

Unlike the old Atari systems, there are A TON of the PS1's and PS2's or XBox's, so if you ever wanted to go back and relive your childhood later, you could always buy the system off E-bay (extremely cheaply) later on in life.

    For now.

Systems stop working. The lasers die, get misalligned. They burn with houses. They rot in dumps. They get stolen.

The reason why the old Atari systems aren't as readily available as newer consoles is shockingly obvious: they've had close to twenty more years to cease to exist.

There may not have been any direct sequels in the FF universe, but the basic gameplay is the same. Form a party, go and kick the ass of some powerful evil, find Moogles, Chocobos, and Sid along the way, participate in many turn-based battles, and (as of late) use summons/guardian spirits to wreak havoc over and over and over. They're up to twelve games now with that basic pattern. I'd call that "milking the franchise," personally.

You forgot the fourth option: spend less.

Stores like Best Buy and Target have games in their sales circulars every week.

Coupons (like Best Buy's Gamer Gift Card or the $5 off any PS2 title that they're offering now) and discount cards help to save a little bit of money. Coupons are free, and the cards are cheap - I got my EB Edge card for $5.

When games hit the clearance racks, they drop in price amazingly quickly. Toys R Us had a very nice selection of games in a clearance sale that, over the course of a few months, increased from 30% off to a whopping 90% off. Walking into the store, spending $15, and waslking out with five or six new games is a very nice feeling.

Buy used. You'll save a lot of money, the games are usually in good shape, and you should be able to return or exchange if the disc is damaged.

Rent. Some games aren't worth the $50, or even $20.

Wait. Sony releases a new batch of Greatest Hits titles every few months or so, and Microsoft and Nintendo have their own lines (albiet ones that aren't updated as often). Every game will drop in price eventually; what was once rare and expensive for the N64 can now be had for $15-$20. PC games hit the jewel case racks within a year or so of release. If you're patient, you'll be able to play it.

Say you buy two $50 games a year. I've spent less than that this year, and I've got a giant pile of quality unplayed games waiting for me. Hell, I've got more than I can play right now because I keep jumping on sales.

You, my friend, don't have a clue in hell as to what you're talking about.

There's a difference between redistribution and archiving.

I've always thought of it with the "Silent movie era" argument. We've lost countless movies and shorts forever because no one thought to save any of the prints. By the time a demand for these older films was created, it was far too late to do anything and those films just weren't there anymore.

The Archive is preventing that from happening. They aren't storing the pages for personal or financial gain; rather, as historical documents.

I know that the argument is flawed (you try writing something better as soon as you wake up), but the point remains that there's a fundamental difference between redistributing and archiving.

It's worth pointing out that there are RPGs and FPSs that don't require the ultra-pretty realistic graphics that you seem to be indicating. In fact, I think I could argue that the graphics really don't matter all that much in either of those genres.

Let's start with RPGs. Paper Mario is a very good game, one that definitely has the ability to pull the gamer in and hold their attention for hours. The graphics there? Very stylized and cartoony, and something that the N64 could pull off very well.

An even better example is the Pokémon games. They've never had anything beyond the most simplistic tile-based graphics...and they're some of the best and most immersive RPGs I've ever played.

Another way to look at it is aging, which gives me some perfect examples for shooters. DOOM, Goldeneye, and the Marathon series are all classics, deservedly, and they aren't because of their graphics. The entire package is great. The graphics are anything but modern, but they're still a ton of fun to play. I still haven't had more fun with a console than I've had with four player Goldeneye.

Besides...if a game's sole selling point is immersion, what's going to happen to it as technology advances and the game becomes less and less impressive?

How do you go about modding a console game, exactly? There's a good chance that Sony and Nintendo won't include hard drives in the next go-round, and if they do, there's no guarantee that they can't pull a Microsoft and ban systems from online play if the system has been physically changed or if the files on its hard drive have been modified.

Online play is an issue too. Sega doesn't run Dreamcast servers anymore, and the only ones that I'm aware of are independent and have required Game Sharks to manually change the IP the game is looking for. That may have changed, but there's no guarantee that that would work on the newer consoles.

Starcraft. Counter-Strike. Everquest. There are a lot of older games that are still played online, and frequently at that.

With the console lifecycle the way it is - four or five years, and then off into the sunset forever - I'm not sure if they could replace the PCs. Or if we'd want them to.
