    First off, I totally agree with this, people always make the analogy that languages are like tools and each job should be implemented with the most appropriate tool. Who would argue against more tools in the workshop?

    But there's a huge missing link here: Languages are horribly inoperable. Even C to C++ requires some tomfoolery like

    #ifdef CPLUSPLUS
    extern "C" {
    #endif
    #include ...
    #ifdef CPLUSPLUS
    }
    #endif

    Is this a joke? The problem is that once you've used that nice bandsaw, you can't smooth the edges by hand. You can't use Python to parse into C++ data structures which then use asm inner loops.

    I know projects exist that have this as their goal, but let's face it... languages are successful these days because they can be used (with varying degrees of difficulty) in isolation for a job.

    So, it's fair to the (many) people that really have no expectation of winning but play anyway. However, it's quite unfair to the people that have a legitimate profit motive.

    What is largely relevant going to the handheld market from consoles is not really sales figures, but rather 3rd party support. Publishers have been dropping the GC like a bad habit, and they won't likely jump back on the Nintendo bandwagon until DS proves that it can move units.

    So all they'll have to spur sales in the beginning is 1st party stuff. There are 2 problems though:

    First, there are some nasty sharks in the water this xmas season in the console game market. San Andreas, Halo 2, GT4... While it's not direct competition, people only have so much time and money to spend, and DS isn't first on anyone's list (except the hard-core nintendrones).

    Second, once xmas comes and goes, and PSP comes out in spring, nintendo will have no flexibility in moving their price point to compete. They're betting the farm on massive early adoption. You read $150 and you can almost see the sweat on their brow.

    This is the classical argument of the marginal value of wage balancing with the marginal disutility of labor for the employee. There is a point at which it becomes more valuable to the employee to NOT work at a given wage, which (in theory) drives up the wage proportionately. If a large enough segment of the labor supply decides not work sufficiently to fill the labor demand, then real wage must rise to meet the marginal disutility of labor.
