I work on computers every day and night. I even reported a phishing scam 3 years ago to eBay.
And yet I fell for one 3 weeks ago. I feel like such a loser.
It was the timing. I had just been on my online checking/banking site, and got an email. I thought, huh, I was just there. Didn't even think about it. I figured i needed to get it fixed so I could do the rest of my transactions that day.
If I fell for it, grandpa and grandma are definately going to fall for it.
I grew up in a small town. A bunch of us went on a school field trip to Chicago. How embarressing.
Oh my god--Black people!
How to ride the L Train?
How to call for a taxi?
Foreign exchange students are taught all sorts of 'survival' guide information that is completely neglected in primary school. Your money management is a good one too. And sadly now, calculators have replaced the ability to even make change.:(
You have a lot of passionate posts on this subject, and I can't really comment on most of your ideas.
But I do have a problem with the idea of tagging someone for life. First, this seems like the wrong place to put the solution. If tagging is NECESSARY, then it's pretty obvious that we're letting them out too early.
Second, this is rife for abuse. We've already heard the problems that have been caused when a sex offender is 'introduced' to the neigborhood. Open database, etc. Imagine how this could be abused. Something as simple as everyone in a city hooking up a horn on their house/store to blare when one of these chips walks by. He wouldn't be allowed to walk anywhere. Refusing to sell goods from your store so such person.
Lastly, civil rights... I'm truly not against their loss of rights in this case. (20 yrs of prison is worse than tagging for life) I'm only concerned about the erosion of the rights for the rest of us. I see RFID leaching it's way into all sorts of things, and this would just be the beginning. On the other hand, prison has a more defined set of rules I don't see being blurred. Why not work on solutions on THAT side of the fence, instead of putting it in Pandora's box of Human RFID.
Don't misunderestimate which side of the fence I'm on. But what exactly are you fighting for here?
The right to watch a crappy screener before the movie comes out? Having a sub-quality version of the film come out before their biggest revenue weekend in the theater is a nasty blow to the bottom line. That distribution of the unfinished CGI of the Hulk was really bad for the PR of that movie (Although I hated the movie anyway when I saw it on DVD)
Yes, the punishment doesn't fit the crime. And it's disparing to watch the government being auctioned off to the highest bidder. But I appreciate the point EFF made
I think the whole idea is extremely intriguing. Once you have a system set up like that, capable of accepting commands.. you can do whatever you want without ever having a trail come back to you. Having a machine tell another machine tell another machine what to do.
The music industry wants it. The movie industry tried it (DIVX), and Bill tried it already. Thank god that failed.
The reason it failed. And it's so obvious: The internet connection HAS to be up. Want to write a document in Word, but your ISP has problems? TOO BAD. Won't Work.
What's sad is that Microsoft made so much money moving the computer world to everyone's home these last couple decades (instead of time-sharing on mainframes, etc). And now they want to move it back with application servers to chip away pennies per use.
"then maybe geeks should take this opportunity to start a network of their own free of corprate and government control"
City ordinances are already coming up restricting WiFi. How long until the FCC makes it illegal to broadcast at certain wavelengths unless you're certified?
Yea, it's legal, but is ain't a hundred percent legal. I mean you can't walk into an internet cafe, boot your laptop, and start downloadin' away. You're only supposed to download in your home or certain designated places.
It breaks down like this: it's legal to buy it, it's legal to own it and, if you're the proprietor of the CD, it's legal to sell it. It's legal to carry it, which doesn't really matter 'cause -- get a load of this -- if the cops stop you, it's illegal for them to search you. Searching you is a right that the cops in America don't have.
Just put the dice down 3 times a week and work out a little more. And remember, always bend the knees and use the legs when lifting heavy objects. Your back should be just fine.
Very interesting about your customer support problem.
I have always done my own taxes. But last year I failed to figure out 100% what to do with some old employee stocks that were forced to be sold at a loss.
So I went to a local non-H&R Block to do the whole thing. Very cheap, answered all my questions.
The point of this story is... a year later I walk in to ask about whether or not our Company's Flexible Spending Account would cover expensive insemination procedures. The list of what is covered is extremely vague. We had planned to max it at $5,000... and if you don't use it, you lose it! The correct answer is very important to us.
Not only was she able to explain it, interpret the law, and set my mind at ease -- she also gave me a hug, said I'd make a great dad, and the whole thing was free.
Do you save that much money spending $70 on software? It sounds like you have a crapload of forms to deal with. Isn't your sanity and time worth another $70? Just curious. It is for me, and I'm a long time do-it-yourself.
I don't understand why you wouldn't just build a mini computer with a caputure card, into the drywall. Cover it back up, and either access the shows via wireless, or even with well placed ethernet connection to your server.
Watch the shows on an 'open' computer without a capture card.

$3600 later....

Yea right.
Who's the only one here that knows illegal ninja moves from the government?
I seriously doubt someone of your writing caliber can even read.

On a side note, I did switch internet providers.
Today's leak about Friday's announcement of a May release...
His rhetorical question is offtopic and up for speculation. Maybe you should start a website about how much Slashdot sucks.
Announcment on Friday about the release in May. I know, it's tough to read words.
Ro-ad is a funny word.
Obviously you have no idea how routers work.
Anyone remember his cameo in some movie of his where he explained that the Top Gun movie was about dick waving? Classic.
Your whole premise is based on trusting the people inside the circle. Undercover agents, corporate minions, and flipped sceners would still bust you.

I think you meant to say that the RIAA would have irrefutable evidence of who they can sue due to the identity of pirates down to the motherboard.

And what are you going to do with that great hardware when you can't connect to your ISP's new "secure" routers?

What you need is something that will power down when your home has been entered, and a safe code has not been passed.
Either that or have it located on someone else's property, although that presents its own problems.

Buy why lose even more quality transmitting mp3's by FM radio?
How utterly annoying for the buyers.
I think an alternative (or an additional alternative) is that the only people allowed to snipe are those with previous bids on the item.
We all know that there's usually little action during the week, and then a ton on the last day. Why not get a little action early on too.
