  3. Re:C is enough, much as I hate it on Remote Code Execution Hole Found In Snort · · Score: 1

Apart from C++ taking bloody ages to compile, you can actually end up with smaller code when writing in C++, but it's damn tough to do it - and so that's not a real argument for C++.

Anyway, even if C++ == bloat, you can still use stl's std::string, std::vector and std::map for most of the simple programming tasks. Sure, they're slow. They add like 1 meg of code bloat and stuff. But you don't get nasty errors from dealing with pointers and memory allocation stuff. And for a userland app that's perfectly reasonable performance-wise. And it's sure not as "bloated" as Java (hint: I like Java, but it's not for everything). If you know what you're doing and you don't mind pulling your hair a lot, stick with pure C, it's more portable, does only what you tell it to do, no hidden surprises, etc. But if you just need to get something done quickly, please, please, use STL You don't have to be using classes or templates and stuff in your own code, just stick with STL. It works on enough platforms already, and it automagically adds a HUGE layer of security.
