I may sound like a troll with this post, and my apologies for it. But I've lost all respect for Cliff B., ever since he used the lame-o "piracy" excuse for not porting - PORTING, mind you, not "developing from scratch" - Gears of War 2 to PC. It's a cop-out, and to me it shows a lack of understanding of the issue and ways around it.
So they're going to delay releases... so what? We'll either drive over the border to a "local" US theatre, or download a US-recorded pirated copy. Makes no diff.
It's not like there's a lot of good flicks coming out lately anyway.
Funny, I filled in my household's data the week the census was opened for submissions, and I sure don't recall having to install any special software. Maybe it was a Java applet, but it sure as hell wasn't anything that I had to take action on.
Fellow Canuckleheads, did you have to install anything?
Some security companies have called this technique pharming.
Phor phuck's sakes! I've had enough of this phreaking 733T-speak from the phucking security compaines! It was original with phreaking; it was mildly amusing with phishing; now it's just annoying.
Why not just leave the terminology as "DNS cache poisoning" and be done with it? [/rant]
About the only thing I didn't (and still don't) like about Steam is that you *have* to log in and authenticate to the servers before you're allowed to play anything that you have associated with your Steam account (in other words, all Valve games).
Sure, you can "go offline", but this usually involves either unplugging your network cable, disabling the network connection under Windows, or screwing around with Steam files on your HDD.
Why can't they just include a switch, button, or check box that says "Play this game offline" and be done with it???
There are still a number of financial institutions around the world that run on various versions of OS/2, both at the server and workstation level.
Also, as of about 5 years ago, CLI OS/2 powered approximately 85% of North America's Automated Teller Machines (ATMs), with a significant share worldwide as well.
I'm sure most of the companies still behind OS/2 are screaming at IBM not to release so much as a comment from the code.
Hear, hear. I had this sense of dread as I was trucking along in my cocoon. When the striders went underneath, I was certain they were going to blast me to hell and there wasn't a thing I could do about it.
That whole sequence (which I played back 5 times before continuing:) reminded me a bit of the whole V'ger flyby in ST:TMP.
There was a series of short films that I remember from a Project Management class I took about a decade ago. They were called "Meetings, Bloody Meetings" IIRC, and I remember it being pretty amusing. I can't find copies - tape or digital - anywhere, though....
I was thinking the same thing. This must be a joke, or a horribly misstated rumour/speculation.
On the off-chance that it is true, I'm curious to know what the future then holds for EB in Canada. I like going to EB, if for nothing else than to troll the bargain bins for PC/N64/PS1/PS2/GB/GBC/GBA titles that are past their primes in the eyes of most; not to mention that we do not (AFAIK) have a single GameStop store in the Great White North.
I happened to take a look at the ISP numbers link contained in the CAUCE article; I'm kind-of doubting how well the research was done on that front.
AT&T Canada hasn't been AT&T Canada for a few years; they're now knwon as Allstream, and IIRC, they jettisoned their consumer ISP division quite some time ago to Netcom, which got swallowed up in the mists of time itself....
Ah, but you're missing an important part of the original posting; the reference was to Win2k3 only.
So, you state the words spoken between the lines, M$ is saying "forget our track record, forget what we said before, and ignore everything happening on our desktop systems; our server r0x0rs!", or something to that effect.
It's easy to say that one version of a server OS, that is becoming less and less like its' notoriously hole-ridden desktop bretheren, is so much better than *anything* the competition can offer. It's much harder to actually do something about it; considering they've been saying essentially the same thing for several years now, they're not much closer to achieving the goal of a "trusted, secure" OS.
...from id, and just say "Longhorn - When It's Done".
In all seriousness, I don't understand what the delay is. Avalon and Indigo are, last I heard, pretty much done, and WinFS has been taken out of the Longhorn plan and is on the back burner for at least another 3 years; so I ask, in an open-letter-type-way, what the hell is the problem in releasing this POS?
Really, what, aside from these two new "major" components, are the major new features in this release of Windoze? Anyone?
Hmm.... Microsoft had a UNIX-y OS some years ago (XENIX? anyone?) - maybe some posters above are correct, and perhaps Microsoft *is* the next subpoena?
Sort of reminds me of the first year that there was a Heavy Metal category at the Grammys.... Favoured to win was Metallica for "...And Justice For All"; award went to Jethro Tull.
Underrated will give positive karma, although it's rarely used (actually, I think I'm the only one I've ever seen that uses it).
Modding something Informative when it really isn't just doesn't make sense.
Oh, wait, I forgot where I was. My bad.:-)
...I whipped past this one and thought it said "Animal Crossing Comes to Hollywood", and wondered why in God's good name anyone would want to make a movie out of that game.
I've been in IT for 11 years, and on the web just as long.... and, AFAIK, this is the first time I have ever seen that joke.
If you don't like it, don't read it. If you like it, laugh.

...they leave the vast majority of their fighters in the hangar??!
Luke hit the answer to this in RotJ, in dialogue with the Emperor: "Your overconfidence is your weakness."
I haven't watched ANH in a while (I should, since I got the DVDs a few days ago), but I do recall one of the officers telling Tarkin that they've underestimated the danger faced by the rebel ships (X- and Y-wings). They probably saw what was coming around Yavin from the fourth moon, and when they stopped laughing, launched what they considered to be an appropriate response.
"Oh, those pesky rebels in their little fighters. Send a couple of squadrons of TIEs out so we can get back to enjoying watching the planets blow up with our uber-cannon."
Probably wasn't until the first barrage of proton torpedoes barely missed the exhaust port that they started getting worried.

After all, Stardock doesn't have any problems developing for PC; they don't DRM their titles beyond what's being implemented with the new GOO platform; and despite the rocky launch of Demigod mired by users connecting with warezed copies, they seem to have made it a fairly successful title.
So they're going to delay releases... so what? We'll either drive over the border to a "local" US theatre, or download a US-recorded pirated copy. Makes no diff.

I echo a previous poster's vote for M.U.L.E. The article also mentioned the Impossible Mission titles (I much preferred the first).
I'd also like to see Forbidden Forest, the Jumpman series, and the Apshai games.
And of course.... ADVANCE OF THE MEGA-CAMELS!!!!!

Maybe it was just me, but did anyone else see the headline and think, "wow, they're making a MMORPG for Dreamcast??!?!?!?"
And, sadly, the first poster - with a VALID comment - gets modded Redundant.
*sigh*

I think the GP meant to state that figure in Web years. :)

Mea culpa for the bad Trek reference.

Anyone with inside information, please comment!

Kinda related.... there's one scene on the bridge of the carrier, when Sark goes to communicate with the MCP - you can see a display "war board".
If you look closely, you can see Pac-Man.
