  1. Sorry... on Epic Sticking With Classic Controllers For Now · · Score: 2, Insightful

I may sound like a troll with this post, and my apologies for it. But I've lost all respect for Cliff B., ever since he used the lame-o "piracy" excuse for not porting - PORTING, mind you, not "developing from scratch" - Gears of War 2 to PC. It's a cop-out, and to me it shows a lack of understanding of the issue and ways around it.

After all, Stardock doesn't have any problems developing for PC; they don't DRM their titles beyond what's being implemented with the new GOO platform; and despite the rocky launch of Demigod mired by users connecting with warezed copies, they seem to have made it a fairly successful title.

  2. Meh. on Canada Responsible for 50% of Movie Piracy · · Score: 1

So they're going to delay releases... so what? We'll either drive over the border to a "local" US theatre, or download a US-recorded pirated copy. Makes no diff.

It's not like there's a lot of good flicks coming out lately anyway.

Fellow Canuckleheads, did you have to install anything?

About the only thing I didn't (and still don't) like about Steam is that you *have* to log in and authenticate to the servers before you're allowed to play anything that you have associated with your Steam account (in other words, all Valve games).

Sure, you can "go offline", but this usually involves either unplugging your network cable, disabling the network connection under Windows, or screwing around with Steam files on your HDD.

Why can't they just include a switch, button, or check box that says "Play this game offline" and be done with it???

There are still a number of financial institutions around the world that run on various versions of OS/2, both at the server and workstation level.

Also, as of about 5 years ago, CLI OS/2 powered approximately 85% of North America's Automated Teller Machines (ATMs), with a significant share worldwide as well.

I'm sure most of the companies still behind OS/2 are screaming at IBM not to release so much as a comment from the code.

On the off-chance that it is true, I'm curious to know what the future then holds for EB in Canada. I like going to EB, if for nothing else than to troll the bargain bins for PC/N64/PS1/PS2/GB/GBC/GBA titles that are past their primes in the eyes of most; not to mention that we do not (AFAIK) have a single GameStop store in the Great White North.

Ah, but you're missing an important part of the original posting; the reference was to Win2k3 only.

So, you state the words spoken between the lines, M$ is saying "forget our track record, forget what we said before, and ignore everything happening on our desktop systems; our server r0x0rs!", or something to that effect.

It's easy to say that one version of a server OS, that is becoming less and less like its' notoriously hole-ridden desktop bretheren, is so much better than *anything* the competition can offer. It's much harder to actually do something about it; considering they've been saying essentially the same thing for several years now, they're not much closer to achieving the goal of a "trusted, secure" OS.

They probably saw what was coming around Yavin from the fourth moon, and when they stopped laughing, launched what they considered to be an appropriate response.

"Oh, those pesky rebels in their little fighters. Send a couple of squadrons of TIEs out so we can get back to enjoying watching the planets blow up with our uber-cannon."

Probably wasn't until the first barrage of proton torpedoes barely missed the exhaust port that they started getting worried.
