The FIRST team I work with had the same idea, but the logistics of setting up a LAN (everyone having legit copies of games being the big one, the pain of bringing so many computers to one place, the actual organization and set-up/clean-up of such an event would've taken forever) were too much for them, and so a Halo/DDR party was planned instead.
It is much easier to set-up 10 Xboxes then 10 computers. It was a 2v2 tournament, double elimination, with a $25 or so gift card to EB/Best Buy for the top team. Selling drinks, snacks, pizza, and charging a $5 admission fee, we made around $200-$300, and we'll be doing it again. And this time with actual advertising, instead of word-of-mouth.
Only thing is that we didn't expect so many people, so we the tournament took a little longer then expected, but it was damn fun. And set-up/clean-up was definetly a lot easier then a LAN party.
Are you kidding me? You tuned into SpikeTV and expected anything less then what you saw? You've got to be kidding me. It's like Maxim's review of videogames on TV. Are you going to take Maxim's reviews of videogames seriously?
I really don't know why you're appalled, you should have expected that. Damn.
The Radeon 9700 was a premiere of ATI's then-new line of graphics (the 9xxx series). The GeForce 4 (notice the 4) 4600 was the top-of-the-line in the previous graphics generation. As such, the ATI 9700 was better then the 4600 in most games, simply because it was PART OF THE NEXT GENERATION OF CARD GPUs. Saying that the Radeon 9700 CRUSHED the GeForce 4 4600 is like saying an SR-72 Blackbird CRUSHED the original Wright Flyer in a speed race. Of course it did, it came 70 or so years after the Flyer.
Now, as for the GeForce 4 4200 competing with the ATI 9500, please remove the pipe from your mouth. The GeFource 4 (notice the FOUR, once again) series of graphics card encapsulated the GF 4 4200, 4400, and 4600, and were made to compete with ATI's generation of cards at that time, the 8xxx series. The middle-of-the-road 4200 was supposed to compete with ATI's 8xxx middle-of-the-road (the exact designation I cannot remember), and Nvidia's 4600 was supposed to compete with ATI's Radeon 8500, and it crushed that card pretty well, if my memory serves me correctly. As a matter of fact, ATI got its ass completely handed to it by Nvidia with Nvidia's GeForce 4 series of cards, compared to ATI's 8xxx series.
Now, the ATI 9500 was a whole NEXT GENERATION after the 4200. ATI's Radeon 9500 was released to compete with Nvidia's 5600, which it more or less soundly trounced. Nvidia's 5xxx series was released to compete with ATI's 9xxx series. For that generation of cards, ATI horribly destroyed Nvidia for a long time, until the end of those generations, when Nvidia shapened up, but never took the lead they once had with their 4xxx series of cards.
As for the current generation of cards (ATI's Radeon xXXX , x200, x600, x800, etc., and Nvidia's GeForce 6xxx, 6600, 6900, etc.), they're neck and neck. Depending on the type of game engine each game uses, Nvidia or ATI come out on top.
As for the GeForce 4 MXs, let's not even go into those. Those were indeed horrible, horrible cards in comparison to anything.
If all teachers mandated voting as a class requirement, this country might have a better voting age distribution. The student population, a demographic overrepresented in both the radical left and right, ultimately has the lowest voter turnout rates.
And you have thousands of uneducated voters who don't care who they vote for, so they'd vote for the candidate they've heard of the most or gives them tax breaks on their hot new Porsche Carrera GT. They'd vote only because they had to to pass the class, not because they want to change their country.
I'm all for less people voting, because then my vote weighs more.
"We are absolutely certain that this really is the creator of the Internet worm because Microsoft experts were involved in the inquiry and confirmed our suspicions and because the suspect admitted to it," said Frank Federau from Lower Saxony police.
OF COURSE! If Microsoft says someone's guilty, of course they are. The fact that they admitted it doesn't mean shit.
"Police described the suspect as a highly intelligent "computer freak" living with his parents."
But OF COURSE he's a 'computer freak' living with his parents. What else COULD HE BE?
Last time I checked, Natural Selection for Steam had 1.5x to 2x more servers then Day of Defeat did. And it's still getting bigger. The NS team is still innovating. I don't see Day of Defeat going much anywhere, the only things that'll change are more maps.
But, Natural Selection is free, and Day of Defeat is not. Too bad Natural Selection will get my $20 and DoD won't.:)
I run Windows XP and find it adequate for what I do. The only reason I haven't installed Linux on any of my machines is games - the main reason I use Windows is for games, and if Linux could play all of the games that Windows does, then I'd switch in a heartbeat.
For a vast majority of my gamer friends, this is also the case. If Linx could play games, I'm sure quite a large number of your non-geek/non-techie people would start using Linux over Windows.
Are you on crack? That's saying that people who drive in NASCAR can't hop an SUV and go 60 MPH on the highway and 30 downtown.
I play Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic for a few hours, then hop into Unreal Tournament 2004 and stay in the middle of the pack (I could go higher if I play 24/7), then hop into Natural Selection and stay at the top of the pack, then go play NWN for another few hours. Maybe your arguement would have credence if you said people who play FPS games can't fire a gun in real life...
I dunno what the hell you're talking about 'competively,' unless you have a huge monitor. I run my GF4 Ti 4200 128MB at max settings at 1024x768 and I have never had a stutter in any game (Halo, UT2K3, BF1942, you name it). If I wasn't giving the card away as a Christmas present, I'd still be using it until ATi and Nvidia release their next line within a few months.
"Europe and the US went through periods of horrendous exploitation and abysmal working conditions before workers demanded, and got, improvements. China will probably follow the same path if given a chance."
This is all good and well. But I will never, ever ever completely switch from Windows for one thing - games. I don't care enough about most anything else to use another operating system, no matter how easy, free, 100% reliable, or how well it makes you lose weight while you surf the Internet!, because of the games.
They eliminated crystal defects and graphite and reduced impurities to 1/20th of previous materials using a high purity gas to grow the diamond layer at lower temperatures of 650-750 degrees C.
It was grown, no diamond cartel for you. Tsk tsk.

You're wrong.

And all I have to say to refute your claim is that it's Tom's Hardware...
Do you know how much a pile of lying bullshit whoever-pays-for-the-ads-and-takes-us-out-to- expensive-dinners Tom's Hardware Guide is?
I thought Sony wasn't going to be OLEDs in 2004?
They patented the GUI, correct?
Why not patent the shape of a car? It's the same thing.

HOLY SHIT GUYS! He built his own FUCKING COMPUTER! This kid GOT to be a genius.

Impending release? Please, hopefully these games will get released this year. Unless both their source codes are stolen.

Has it occurred to anyone that this is a weblog and that this guy might be lying? Maybe?
Froogle's the best. I love it. Saved me $10-$30 when I was looking for some Arctic Silver 5.
Maybe Legos could also be not so damned expensive. Jesus, $10 for a little Star Wars rover with 50 pieces that fits on your palm? Screw that.
