  1. Re:You may not need a laptop on Best Laptop for Going Around the World? · · Score: 1

I agree with the above. Also, you should consider that while you're likely to find Internet cafes in many remote places, opportunities for hooking up your own laptop, or even wireless are much rarer. I drove the Mongol Rally last summer (through eastern europe, russia, kazakhstan, uzbekistan, kyrgyztan and mongolia), and we took an old G3 Pismo powerbook with us for blogging. We quickly realized that it was mostly unnecessary weight, since we could never hook it up, and we didn't get much time to use it in the first place. In the end we broke it, when our car (a little east german Wartburg) got stuck and flooded when trying to cross a river in Mongolia.

My phone provider has been offering that service for a while (a "locate my phone" feature on their web site). When i tried it out, it would have an error of less then 100m in downtown Berlin. They said the service would work much more precise in dense urban areas where there are many cells then out in the countryside. Makes sense.

But that means that the 1000 meters average figure could also be more useful then expected, if you get better approximation in urban areas (where you need it), and just a rough estimate when cruising on the highway.

Not really an issue, given that Macs all came with FireWire for quite a while, and that typical non-Macs wouldn't know how to access a mac-formated Hard disk anyways (yes I know there are ways to do it, but can your friends/parents/co-workers do it?).

If I have a friend record a TV show (VCR or DVR) and give me the recording so I can watch it later, It's okay. There's a german site, www.onlinetvrecorder.com, which so far managed to avoid lawsuits by using this argumentation. They let you download (for free) anything running on german television, as long as you specifiy that you want it beforehand. By doing that, they argue that the user is doing nothing else then programming a VCR, or in this case designating someone else to do it.

I haven't used 1.0, so i can't speak of that, but I have used Photoshop since 2.0, and I actually think that most of the core features I used most of the time have been there since then, and haven't changed much (or needed to change). Sure, there's a lot of new stuff, some of it very useful, a lot of it feature-bloat (but possible useful for someone else), but I'd say that may basic approach to the program hasn't changed much between 2.0 and CS3. My cell provider offers this service where I call a number, leave it connected for 30 seconds, and it will reply with an SMS with the artist and name of the song which is currently playing. It works extremely well, even in crowded bars with lots of noises, and it requires only a 30 second clip. It's quite impressive.
