  2. My observation on We Don't Need No Stinkin' Broadband · · Score: 1, Interesting

As someone who works for an ISP that offers both dialup and broadband services---

98% of people who want or have broadband don't need it. They check their email twice a week and/or look at weather or news sites once in awhile.

75% of people who *have* broadband assume everyone else does and sends email with attached 150mb video files of their kids' snowball fight, with 200 accumulated addresses in the CC field. They also average to circulate about 130 "FW:FW:FW:RE:FW:FW:FUNNY!:FW:FW:FW:RE:FW:FW:RE:HAH A!:FW:RE:FW:" emails during their time at the computer.

100% of people who demand broadband don't want to pay for it. Either they forget or they never knew the days of $50/month or pay-per-minute dialup (at 14.4Kbps or less!). $40/month is the best we can offer. If we could offer it for less, we would, but all too often our customers get wined and dined by some $29/month special by the local cablemodem provider and jump ship. I point out in their offer that this rate is only going to last for 6 months, but they usually respond with "If they raise the rates, I'll just cancel and go somewhere else."

Fuckwits. I give up. I'm going to quit IT and open a restaurant.

I've been around most of the U.S., and I see more obese people here in WI (where I live now) than anywhere else. Try as I might to escape all the temptations about me, I've gained about 50 extra pounds myself. Everywhere you turn there's stuff to eat that you really shouldn't but oh damn does it taste so gooood.

I can go to to just about anywhere- stores, malls, movie theatres, exercise gyms, look around, and I'm *still* the 'thinnest' person around.

So yeah, I'd like to blame it on a virus or something too ;)

I'm just now giving NetBSD a serious try. I half-heartedly installed it on one of my little-used machines some time ago (1.6.1 iirc), but didn't really spend a lot of time with it. My main workstation is Fbsd 6.0, but i'm having an issue with a series of bugs or quirks in sysinstall and glibs in the ports collection. Maybe I'm just thick or something, but after a couple of months of googling, mopish hacks and/or otherwise trying to resolve these I'm running out of motivation. (There are open bug reports on most of these issues but they don't affect everyone so they're not being followed up on. Fbsd devels are busy with more important things, and I appreciate that).

So for now I've decided to upgrade that little 1.6.1 machine to 3.0 and try that out for awhile. Take a break from my issues above. So far I like it. I had the assumption that nbsd would be "all business no fun" (like obsd) but I'm pleasantly surprised. pkgsrc seems no less comprehensive than FreeBSD's ports selection (well duh), or at least I'm finding all the stuff that -I- use in there.

I still feel like I'm running away from my problems but at the moment nbsd seems like a nice umbrella to stand under for the time being.

    -however-

Instead of going the classic route of tuning a 'big' or 'bloated' installation to fit their needs, they seem to be tossing it all aside and jumping on the Gentoo bandwagon. Not a bad thing in itself, but by comparison Gentoo will *seem* faster to them because the only experience they had was their Mandrake box running KDE, Apache, Samba, et all and having all these background services running. It perpetuates the Gentoo Myth and creates some zealotry. (or maybe the zealotry is unavoidable regardless, i dunno).

Very "straight forward" distros like slackware and debian will always have a place for advanced users to build the linux they need. It also serves as a good demonstration that the benefits of linux aren't unique to Gentoo. Whether Gentoo's model is good or bad is up for debate, but it is good to have different philosophies and different development strategies.

    Besides, Slackware is classic.
