Hmm, you must live in an alternate reality.

I was there too. For a good 2 months after Diablo 2 went gold the closed realm servers were virtually unplayable. After about 2 months they got things running much smoother. That said it took a good 3 months for them to get the servers and server code up to snuff, fairly reasonable level of snuff anyway.

I recall being very disappointed and bitter those first 2 months. I recall giving up for the first 2 months for sure and played the game offline. Least with THAT game one had that option.

I was really unhappy at paying full bore max price (50 plus dollars at the time as my memory recalls) for the product and having it unplayble as I had expected it to be played, ONLINE via CLOSED realms (so as to avoid cheating asswipes as adverstised on the box).

This observer can't be surprised they have had massive problems with WoW. I'm not unhappy I came to the conclusion (some years back) it is best to wait at least six months after a product goes 'gold' before considering purchase. For someone like me, experienced, to run out and buy WoW at release would require a level of stupidity even I can not meet.

To the current crop of WoW whiners (the ones who
should know better yet for some reason do not) I wave my now empty wine glass at them and toss them some rank mouldy cheese to gnaw on while they huddle and moan in thier damp, piss stained, little corner of the world.

Oops, there I go being offensive again.

Okay, I'm no PC gaming spring chicken. 48 years old and been around the block twice when it comes to computer games. Recent related experience: I was with DAOC from near the start of their launch, Blizzards Diablo2 as well. Was a fewl and bought Never Winter Nights at release..etc. (all the above bought at release)

What sage advice do I have for all the whining crybabys out there that can't seem to learn from experience? Allow me to beat it into your thick crybaby skulls.

Item one.: When it comes to massive online games in particular, NEVER buy the game until it has been out for AT LEAST six months. Period. THis also applies to games that are not massive online items. Any game released these days usually has a patch/fix cycle during first six months AT LEAST, other sad cases take up to ayear to get 'right', if ever. Major Added bonus. TIred of paying 50-70 bux up front for games? WAIT. I picked up Morrowind for 10 bux just a few weeks back.

Item two: As it relates to Blizzard history directly. Blizzard had a similar problem with the release of Diablo2. THe game was unplayble more or less for the first six months of release, until Blizzard fixed the servers. (Yes I'm refering to closed server realm play not the games some random
gaming jackass hosted on his/her PC>)

Item THree: Any online game of noteworthy populatrity will have launch problems Problems to be expected with the launch of WoW were written all over the wall. I propose to you that anyone with any gaming experience at all that did not understand that going into the agreement with Blizzard at the outset is a profound idiot. Period. Blame yourself not Blizzard. Sit back and wait for them to fix it, they will I'm sure... er.. yeah ,... sure they will.

Item 4: Meanwhile while all you are testing it and paying Blizzards bill and paying for their $80,000+ (ha) cars I'll enjoy offline gaming and consider buying WoW or maybe EQ2 sometime this summer. More likely, I'll wait until next fall. By then I expect both will have some shakedown things squared away and the games can be properly evaluated. As a added bonus I would expect the shelf price to drop by then. See, I'm one of the ones that concluded it was a ripoff to pay 50 bux plus up front for any online game that required a monthly service fee to enjoy it. If the games in question still cost that much by summer-fall of this year I simply won't buy them. No whining needed.

Bottome line, if your one of the whiner crybabys
STFU and buck up. Cancel the account or STFU. Wait till they fix it and come back or STFU.

Cheerio, I hope I offended some of you. Have a nice day ..

Today I run a Win98 box (before that I ran OS/2), I enjoy my share of porn, illicit software and what all. If anyone should be infected with mass problems via virii, spyware, etc, it should be me. Being on cable now and all, I have access to far more than I had before.

I'm not infected, I do not have problems.

But I do take defensive measures. I'm not a total

I do have to spend too much time doing the defensive thing but for crying out loud it is not something that is so difficult a person of average intellect can manage.

I'm sorry but they are just to GD stupid to be on the internet then. NO excuse for a 'old timer' PC user to be in such a state of computing stupidity. Period.

If his old timer dumbass can do it and stay uninfected then I suspect, those that can not are just too damn lazy to go and learn something new.
Too lazy to bother to read and learn about what they need to do. If it is that difficult for them it is not so hard to learn that the best defense for someone that lazy is to buy and run a Apple Mac. (I've never owned one, they always *were* too expensive for me).

Now, having said all that I hope I offended some of you. Honestly you deserve being offended.

First: A big company (Tmobile in THIS case) with lots of cash can hire people that supposedly know how to set up secure networks. Without arguing how cometent THEY were or are, it goes without saying they are probably more competent and knowledgeable than the countless hordes of joe blows out setting up home networks. What chance do ya have , Joe Blow? Not much. COver your ass and pray. Be paranoid and you have good reason to be.

Second big moral: Ties to above. Same story but different outfit. United STates Secret Service compromised by bad practices. How freaking ironic and sad. It goes to show now matter how smart and
hip you think YOU are you can be a total freaking idiot and be holed by the 'enemy'.

I found the story very interesting and it encapusulates so well the issues affecting ANYONE connected to the electronic web we all use. NO matter how GD smart you think you are you can be hosed. It is with good reason to be paranoid about your personal information. THAT IS THE MORAL.

I spammed everyone I knew on various email lists with this story in hopes SOME OF THE CLUELESS I know will read it and understand in some small aspect some of what I tend to rant about when it comes to computer security in general and when I go off on my MS bashing tangents what that is about as well.

I suppose another moral is no matter how often those of us that try to lead the horse to water, the stupid jackass will continue to refuse to drink and die.
