There was a lot more going on then that. The so called scream speech as you probably are aware was his being slightly above the noise level of the crowd which was filtered out while being replayed repeatedly. Also a week or so before that he had called out big media on how it was one of the biggest problems in the country and needed to be dismantled, there were various other factors involved as well.
Depends on how you look at it. Microsoft is worth a couple of hundred billion dollars. That money came from somewhere (a market aberration, monopolistic practices etc). Now if that money had been used for other purposes no matter what marginal percentage you take out of it, there will inevitably be babies impacted:).
Yeah I don't think people refer to the US being directly responsible for Saddam's rise to power but as a secondary consequence. In any case thanks for the book ref I'll get my hands on it:).
Not trying to be a troll here but from what little I've read I thought the 1963 coup was CIA sponsored? Mind fleshing out what you've read about the events preceding the Baathist's rise to power?
I've been interested in Feisty since I read the reviews, have posted a couple of times so far and haven't been particularly impressed. The beta has severe issues with RAID, which sucked in the better part of 2-3 days for me. After finally getting it working (off a separate non RAID disk) RDP didn't work (krdc?). I tried Beryl which in its defense is in beta but that wound up corrupting the display (worked but things under focus etc weren't visible, taskbar not refreshing). I'm withholding judgement till the 19th when it goes gold but it hasn't been the panacea I was hoping for.
I've been messing with it for the past week too with exactly the opposite result. Although admittedly I was looking to setup RAID.
Attempt 1) RAID didn't work from the standard install
Attempt 2) Got the DVD with the alternate install included, Created the Linux Raid Partition, had to back out of a screen to alter a partition throwing the error cannot stat/dev/md0
Attempt 3) Tried to reinstall , wasn't able to delete/dev/md0 since it was in use... (this is from the installer)
Attempt 4) Tried to reinstall, deleted the entire partition table, recreated the RAID, the install failed with corrupt file errors (the DVD was verified when I burned it)
Attempt 5) Just to make sure the DVD was bad I tried a regular install on a single disk without RAID and it actually installed but on a reboot gave a GRUB Error 15
Attempt 6) Downloaded the alternate CD and installed using that with RAID selected, the install went through, on reboot got a GRUB Error 16 (which according to the docs, said happens if you have a windows partition which I didnt, suggestions were to run a disk check), had the disk sync and ran fsck , the subsequent reboot still had the same problem, booted with the live CD to see if I could mess with the grub.conf , needed to install mdadm (apt-get install mdadm) for it but despite my network cards (wired and wireless) being detected they were unable to get an IP Address.
I had read great things about Ubuntu here and how close it was coming to being good enough and wanted to give it a spin and switch over if possible. Doesn't seem highly likely at the moment at least. (Downloading Open Suse 10.2 at the moment despite current revulsion over the Novell/MS deal:P)
I beg to differ. One of the primary reasons I like SG1 (and dislike Atlantis) is about the strong underlying themes about theology and religious exploitation. About people doing acts of lunacy (The Season 1 ep Politics) based on faith. How blind faith wreaks havoc and how easily people are manipulated. One of my favorite lines from the show
TEAL'C: I thought it fitting that on this day when we must sacrifice our short lived freedom that we do so here...at the site of the Battle of salsacksor...where you're father gave his life for this very cause...he began to doubt the Goa'uld long before this rebellion took shape Gerak. It was your father's death at their hands that led you to question what god is so deserving of my worship.
GERAK: you were not one who was chosen...you did not witness the wonders I beheld.
TEAL'C: did that erase the dead...heal the sick and wounded? Destroy their enemy with but a wave of their hand.
GERAK: the Goa'uld deceived us...the Ori's powers are pure.
TEAL'C: then what is the measure of a God Gerak... is it the scope of their power or how they choose to wield that power? Would a god who is prepared to lead us on the path of enlightenment so contradict this divine benevolence by destroying all those who refuse to believe in him?
GERAK: Those who refuse to believe... must die

Why not just use the software raid built in? With the mobo raid I've found issues where swapping a motherboard can be problematic. You can avoid the problem by using software raid completely. Not to mention significant ease of use imho. That's one of the number one advantages Linux has (for the end user) imho.
I'm installing Ubuntu (Kubuntu actually, a KDE fan) for the first time, looking to migrate from SUSE. I got a copy of 6.10 and thought I'd use that and then do an in place upgrade to 7.04 next month (from what I read online it was a matter of issuing a single command). What do you guys recommend? A straight up 7.04 beta or 6.10 followed by the upgrade? I'm somewhat of a newbie with ~nix (but with relatively standard hardware). Thanks
I believe you misunderstand the purpose of copyright, its not to protect you or your labor but actually to promote production of creative work to in turn benefit the public. If there's another model that accomplishes the task more efficiently that should be the one adopted. Again its not about the producer of the content but the public. Compare the same to open source software. It benefits the public on the face of it, it flies against conventional wisdom, why should anyone give away the years of labor they put into something, yet as you I presume (being on slashdot) know its been a huge and growing positive in the world.
The issue is as they innovate or die, the media producers can go head to head with piracy and win but they actually have to compete for that. For example if I could download HD torrents from abc / disney whatever on all their fare but with advertisements embedded , some people wouldnt forward (yes a small percentage) another smaller percentage of revenue would be realized by product placement so on and so forth. The point being it would be a model whereby some revenue would be generated even despite giving the product away for free and even without giving it away for free having it available at a low cost non DRM'd would cause widescale adoption. Why did the guy in the article start using UKNova cause it was easy to use and got him what it wanted, if there was a iTunes variant that offered him 10 cent uber fast downloads of anything and everything he wanted what're the chances of him going down the so called dark path?
Like everyone overjoyed that someone with some control actually has sense about the music market. The bigger point what can we do to ensure that the governments do hear him and instead of forcing Apple over a barrel to the same to the big four music companies?
Enemies like you? The america I was taught of, the USA of the founding fathers wasn't the grotesque human rights violator it has become over the past century. How about if someone kills 3 million of your neighbours (est. immediate death toll in Vietnam) over an enemy of theirs that you had little to nothing to do with. How about to save themselves from an attack they invade your country and kill hundreds of thousands of your brothers so they 'dont have to fight at home'. How is it moral in any way to subcontract your so called war to a people that had nothing to do with it and kill them in the hundred of thousands and millions. Read up on history and read up on human rights as well as who qualifies as being human (no, its not just us Americans)
what can be done to make it trivial? I use Windows MCE and in spite of its quirks getting it up and running has been largely trivial. If using non standard hardware I'd understand but getting myth up and running for example with the common Hauppauge line of tuners isn't trivial.
I don't know what to say but if it requires one to jump into console mode and isn't dead simple it won't get widespread market penetration. Even though i'm an experienced windows user and a little better then a newbie I gave up after tinkering with it for a day (I was trying to set it up on my existing SUSE 10.0 box)
Could we get more data on that? Is iTunes also falling or are the WMA based (napster et. al) skewing the statistics in general? Also how about emusic and allofmp3.com?
Unfortunately there are 100's of millions of people living in 3rd world countries / below the poverty line that live in these coastal areas, think bangladesh , half the country is prone to flooding without rising sea levels, karachi a city of 10-15 million right by the water, calcutta n thats just a small part of the world, similar cities in africa, asia europe the americas , how much do you think it'd cost b/w 100 million to a billion people? Now imagine displacement of that magnitude happening within a lifetime...
Greenpeace founder supports nukes..
Watch The Inconvenient Truth, one of the salient points of the movie was we can make changes today, now that will in time have tangible effects, switching from coal to nuclear for example (also fyi coal also is highly radioactive , minute quantities of radioactivity x tons n tons of coal). Another equally important point with hydrocarbons worth billions if not trillions of dollars in the ground there is sufficient business for people to do anything possible to stem erosion in market share (cue the CO2 is life ad's)
The bottom line is regardless of our 'understanding' of us being the causative agents or not, the CO2 levels are rising and this in turn will have adverse effects. Even if this were a result of polar bears farting if we can work to offset the excess to minimize impact, would that not be a sound move? Also regarding what we can do? cut down on power usage, energy saving appliances, the whole thread on slashdot and elsewhere on minimizing idle mode power consumption, energy efficient cars hybrid electric etc, flourescent lightbulbs etc etc. Bottom line there is no significant downside that i'm aware of to conservation and switching from hydrocarbons to the maximal extent possible, then why not do it?
So an organization viewed by its country as being a freedom fighting force that successfully fought off a foreign invasion handing out USD is somehow 'horrible'...
Look at the history of the conflict before tarring one side or the other - http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article14 391.htm
FIOS @ 30 MBps does usually tap out 802.11g. It comes much closer to its theoretical speeds then 802.11g. Also much more importantly trying to stream HD content across my home network is more then enough to overwhelm the 802.11g network. I'm sure other people have various other applications where they're looking forward to a nice speed bump as well.

If people actually realized what the government spent money on, it would be a little easier to have them put a stop to frivolous spending and costly wars. Not to mention selling a war with a cost of $1,000 tops with cashbacks (oil sales) of most of that and then an annual cost upwards of 2000 dollars would've had the average voter thinking whether it was worth it or not versus sending others kids out to die.

And even so its apparently the #2 music store with a significantly higher market share then other competitors.
Market share for online music retailers:
Apple iTunes: 67%
eMusic: 11%
Real Rhapsody: 4%
Napster: 4%
MSN Music: 3%

A thousand over the mediterranean, A thousand over the atlantic?
Naww better to invade their beaches O:-)
I've got a FIOS 30 Megabit connection which literally choked my Linksys router, can't even begin to imagine what a gig's worth would do
I wouldn't. I'd rather have them cut the fat from the current programs like the highway to nowhere /DoD etc to fund it.
