Because some people suck at driving too much to handle the higher speed. Seriously. People like me would love to go faster than most posted speed limits, I can handle it easily, especially since I actually give the road my undivided attention when driving.
Unfortunately the morons who have a mobile headset glued to their ear while they're reading a newspaper, eating, and grooming at the same time while driving even though they have terrible spatial perception ruin it for those of us who would like to get to our destination quicker.
Microsoft causes a lot of headaches (though it's getting better), Google does not.
The reason a lot of people despise Microsoft is because for many years they were subjected to their crappy, unstable, insecure operating system with no way out if they wanted to stay compatible with the rest of the world.
So say Google becomes the next standard for everything, if they continue to provide quality service and products people won't be nearly as quick to bash them.
Transparency used in very moderate ways (like around 93% opacity) are actually easier on my eyes. Having this instead of pure white backgrounds makes the windows less harsh and less like a light bulb, probably more similar to a real piece of paper is never a single color all over, shadows and what is behind the piece of paper affect what you see altogether.
Of course really transparent windows make it impossible to read anything as I'm sure you're refering to.
Except that music has been a part of humanity for so long, it's arguable wether or not music is just a luxury. Personally I'd consider denying someone the ability to create or listen to music at all is rather cruel.
However with that said, one could create their own music and/or listen to music that where you don't infringe on the copyright by obtaining it for free.
Also remember, copyright infringement. When you steal you deny the owner the possession of the object without fair compensation. Going into someone's house and walking out with their television is theft, going into their house and building your own copy of that television and taking it home with you is not.
I tend to hide/minimize apps when I'm not interacting with them, so konfabulator works well for the way I use computers because when I get up it's always my desktop showing. So when i come back i can see any RSS or weather updates and whatever else I'm monitoring.
Some other useful 'widgets' are system monitors. For example I can see all the IP addresses and ports I'm connected to or are connected to me through a widget on my desktop. I also use iPulse (an independent piece of software) to cover all kinds of other system activity.
I agree though, most widgets are rather pointless and sometimes slower than another method that could be used.
So if the article replaced every instance of OS X with Linux and Apple with some distribution of your choice it suddenly becomes news for nerds instead of propaganda for Linux zealots.
FreeBSD and Linux might not have been a better choice if say, the developers knew how to develop for Macs better or if there are some aspects of Darwin that lend themselves to the task. Maybe they wanted the benefits of having a tightly integrated system as a base so that they wouldn't have to worry about making a mistake in their configuration. Who knows, even if it's just because they're all Apple fans I wouldn't call it a poor choice.
Wow...just wow. I haven't had any problems with those except maybe the problem with Microsoft having a file system that doesn't support certain characters. Are you saying it's better to have limitations on what you can name your files? Also since my upgrade to tiger I noticed that OS X will automatically replace 'bad characters' with underscores so that SMB won't bitch.
Every other comment I could make has been answered by someone else.
Yeah and I could run most mac software in OS X 10.2 and I'm pretty sure Apple still supports it (it came as a part of my iBook and I still have Apple Care on it).
However the difference being Apple's newer versions are preferable to it's older versions which, you know, actually make sense.
At least Apple's system upgrades involve more than a GUI change and actually enhance performance.
Disk Utility allows you to image a disk. Apple has had free Disk Imaging software included with their machines since way before OS X, however they were somewhat limited I believe. You can also use dd in OS X just like you can in GNU Linux.
Seriously how is this sad? Is there something wrong with people who want to watch TV but aren't interested in how it works exactly? What about cars? You'd be amazed at how many people don't know much more beyond "You put gas in it and drive and when it acts funny you take it back to the dealer for repairs."
Customization can be fun and all but people need to keep up with the rest of the world around them and since more and more things are revolving around the personal computer they have no choice but to use one. So why is it bad that technology advances to make this possible?
In fact it makes my life easier. See I have family and friends who I would consider intelligent and bright but because they simply don't have the time to fool around with computers as much as I have, I mean they've figured out things not related to computers faster than I can, and some are a lot better at other subjects. It's just that they simply don't have the tech knowledge and awareness that took me from fourth grade through high school to develop on my own. So when they have computer issues or need to do a computer related task for the first time, they end up calling on me for help to either fix their problem or help them figure it out faster.
The way I see it, it's a good thing that technology is advancing to make people's lives easier. Even the 'almighty' computer user like you probably benefits from the advancements in ease of use. I mean, would you rather change settings with slider bars and checkboxes or by entering arbitrary characters in a.config text file.
By the way, I think insulting people's intelligence because they, you know, actually have lives and didn't have the opportunities we had is snobbish and disgusting.
Yep, but the hack isn't hard and sometimes I wonder if it was disabled for another reason. It seems that people who used the hack had more frequent issues with the logic board.
Oddly enough my last phone upgrade had most of those features you mentioned and works better as an actual phone than the less feature rich one I had before (black and white screen with green backlighting and could only text/web in addition to making calls). In fact the battery life is better.
What is it with the comparing of people to things...Here's the difference. Her intent is obvious, she's relaxing on the beach. Any idiot should be able to tell this because it's a social norm. People don't normally lay down on the beach to advertise their bodies as sex toys.
A wireless access point broadcasts a signal into public airspace, just like FM radio and broadcasted TV. If this signal is open and advertising itself as present, the intention isn't as clear. The expectation is that someone using the technology would actually think of the possibility of strangers using their wireless network, if anything they'd have enough common sense read the instruction book if they weren't technologically inclined enough to realize that a wireless network is by nature insecure. By normal logic (those who don't realize that there are just a lot of stupid/careless owners out there) the wireless access point is being provided for public service. If I put a table of books and cookies outside on a street corner and left it there I wouldn't expect people to consider it private property that they shouldn't touch, the intention seems to be "Someone is providing books and cookies to the neighborhood".
Simply put, a HUMAN in public is obviously not advertising themselves as a sex toy. An unaccompanied and open THING in public is usually considered a public donation.
So you're comparing living people to things. If you're standing on a street corner doing nothing but carrying a lot of stuff does that mean I can walk up and take stuff from you? Why not? There are trashcans at bus stops that I'm allowed to throw stuff in.
Or how about radio, I'm allowed to tune into privately owned radio stations and listen to them, they never gave me written permission or walked to my door saying, "you can tune into my station" to do it but obviously I'm allowed to.
The point is, there's a different etiquette for certain actions. Wi-Fi is sort of bordering it because it's somewhat new and you're using someone elses bandwidth, but at the same time your broadcasting waves into public domain that advertise the existince of an open access point.
It's a cultural given that you can relax on the beach with a swimsuit on, but it's also a cultural given that you can't trespass on someone's body without their consent. This kind of thing has existed much longer than wi-fi.
It's because Americans think that showing that stuff to kids will mentally disturb them or warp their minds. What will basically happen if they don't edit it is that some kid will beat up another kid in school and stab him with a knife or something and then the parents will all point their fingers at Naruto (or some video game). I remember they pointed their fingers at Pokemon for some dumb kid's actions before. I think he tried to fly like a Pidgy and ended up hurting or killing himself.
Unfortunately they don't seem to realize that it has to be something else in the culture. I've played plenty of 'bad games' during my childhood and even had Doom against my mother's will (but my father argued for me) and I didn't grab a chainsaw (my favorite weapon in the game) and cut some other kid up.
Sometimes I wonder if the fact that we don't show the consequences of certain actions in our children's programs is the reason why they do something stupid.
I'm sure some adults like cute things or the fantasy of giant robots. I for one enjoyed shows you probably would dislike and dislike nearly everything you mentioned (I watch anime to get away from all the serious philosophical crap).
Also I find cliche doesn't really matter much as long as you can enjoy the series. If you're letting the fact that a character has blue hair get in the way of enjoying a show then your priorities for what is entertaining are probably screwed up.
If you can't afford a D->A converter you really don't need to be spending all your time in front of the television. Go take courses at a community college, read, play with the kids, whatever, just do something worth spending your life on.
How about picking pockets?
Seriously, why do you feel the need to tell people what's is and what is not worth spending your life on? There are people who simply suck at life and suck at trying to not suck at life, what should they do?

Ever play Bushido Blade 2 for PSOne? I believe it had some degree of learning in it's A.I.
I find it funny just because of the use of basselope, but is there some reference I don't know of?

What job is this? Sounds perfect for me.
Maybe it's by coincidence but all but one of my logic board failures happened very soon after using a second display with my 14" 800G3 iBook.
I know this, by higher frequency I mean they tend to fail faster because of the extra heat generated.

Well which do you think would be more fun if you were part of the police organization. Sitting and waiting for that right conversation...
Barging in with guns and knocking defenseless/unsuspecting workers in intel suits with the back of your assault rifle?
Oddly enough my last phone upgrade had most of those features you mentioned and works better as an actual phone than the less feature rich one I had before (black and white screen with green backlighting and could only text/web in addition to making calls). In fact the battery life is better.
