Mi Nickname might be in all caps, but it's not at least "Anonymous Coward". You have modpoints _and_ post as AC?. That is tricking the moderation system. AC posting is there for those that doesn't have an account, and for those that has to hide their id for some important reason, not so you can flame and keep your good karma at the same time. Someone that tricks the moderation system shouldn't get mod points. If yoy reply, at least have the guts to show your face.
The fact that the moderator doesn't understand C++ Doesn't make the post offtopic. If you don't understand the post, don't moderate it. It sounds like a basic concept, but many people just don't get it. You are not obligated to moderate down every comment that you think may be just offtopic/flamebait/troll. If you are unsure, you better use your modpoints to mod-up what you do undestand, instead of modding down what you don't.
I Know this has been said a million times ...

Linux.conf.au Coming Soon
·
· Score: 3, Interesting
Shoudln't the conference be called GNU.conf.au or GNU/Linux.conf.au?
Names are important, that's why we use them in the first place. Calling it Unix.conf.au would be misleading. Calling it Linux.conf.au is misleading too...
I understood perfectly what he was saying. I just pointed out that the hole concept of HAVING themes at all, is a more important breakthrough than the colours or shapes of a particular theme. And that that feature was in the Free Desktops long before it reached the propietary ones.
"Can I just drop any document onto a printer icon and have it spit out the result?"
Can i just make a few modifications to the windows source and pass it over to a friend?
Compared to the scope of the second question, the first one is irrelevant.
Not everything is about functionality, remember, it's not called "Faster Software", nor "Slicker Software", it's called "Free Software", because it's goal is to bee Free to all it's users, and let the users be free to do whatever they wan with they computer without relying on big corporations managing their lifes and ideas.
Would you trade your freedom for nice icons?, I value my freedom a lot more than that.
Ok, Keramik is ugly, and it's not something one would call ellegant, but it's rounded and has some nice effects, like alpha-blending, and that's what people want to see. It may not be the most beautiful thing out there, but it's better than the default square gray buttons.
Actually, GNOME had Themes when windows hab static GUI, Microsoft introduced a theme engine in 2002, but Gnome had one way before, and had pretty good themes at that time. In this case, M$ coppied GNOME/KDE.
Uses the default theme anyway, that the beautiness of having themes, but for those that hasn't used gnome or gnu/linux at all, the first impression will be important...
KDE made a good job choosing Keramik as the default theme, before that, they allways shipped the ugliest one.
Yup, it refers to transistors, but since now everything uses them (besides some truly expensive audio systems), I meant to use it to diferenciate systems with mobile parts likes HDs from flashs, for example. I am not the first one to use it in this sense anyway...
This kind of devices would be incredible for backup purposes, but also, the recording method seems to be also fast, would they accept allmost-unlimited rewrites?, in that case, this technology could finally replace magnetic devices. Solid state is allways better, but so far, the existing alternatives don't offer the durability and flexibility of hard disks.
Emacs that all of those things, it's smarter, and better integrated. And, regardless of what anyone would say, in emacs i don't have to move my hands away from the keyb. That's faster.
About the clippy thing, we have the Emacs Psychiatrist:)
Whenever some product has tried to compete directly with Microsoft, Micro$oft has just killed it. M$ is an unfair competitor, and it know just how to get ride of the rest of the market. Just look at the FUD campaign aginst GNU/Linux they are doing... I Think that FireFox is good for Micro$oft. The Browsers war has been for years a black point in the reputation of m$, and have caused them legal troubles. The fact that there is another browser out there, and that there seems to be an anti-IE-pro-Firefox campaign that has reached the Media, let's microsoft say that there is just fair competition, and make the cort forget all microsoft's monopolistic practices.
IMO, Artists should be able to live from their art. That's one thing. IMO, Information, including art, should be Free (as in Free Speech).
It would be WRONG to not pay artists. It would also be wrong to deny people they legitim right to accesss art.
So, we need a solution in which the artist gets paid , and the people get the content they diserve.
For example, people is free to do whatever they want to music. The artist sells disks. Those that want to help the artist, and also receive the disk with a nice poster, lirycs, etc, buys the disk for a reasonable price. The artist also charges for tickets for they concerts, interviews, merchandise, etc.
And there is no MPAA/RIAA/Sony/Other-Bloodsuckers in this history.
I'm an ethical person, that is, i have a set of rules that lead my life, rules that are not defined by society, nor by the government, nor by a religion, i define those rules, and i respect them. So, ethics are involved in anything i do, Including, Choosing an OS. I Consider Using Propietary Software is ethically wrong. So i Don't. After that, choosing GNU, BSD, FreeDOS, or not using a computer at all, is a technicall choice. But the choice of using Propietary Software or Free Software is ETHICAL. And, no, i don't think that being ethical is stupid.
I Didn't say just developers,I said Hackers that work as developers, syadmins, etc. It's not the same.Hackers are intimately related to the unix history, and to the history of other highly customizable, text based operating systems. This comment is not intended to be discriminatory in any way to windows users,i'm just stating that usually the hacker comunity is related to other kind of OSs,and that usually hackers are hired as developers or sysadmins, so,in that areas, unix dominates.Of course there are developers and sysadmins whom are not hackers,or that don't use unix.
This is the same as saying "Users choose Windows, Hackers choose GNU". It's not something specific to the handheld or the robotics market. It's the same that happends in the Servers Vs. Desktops dept. In areas where there is a Hacker in charge, for example, sysadmins, developers, etc. a Unix like OS will most certainly be choosen, and GNU is in most cases the best choice, because of many reasons, including ethical and comercial ones.
It's not easy to reach the end user. Specially because it's expensive. Some companys spend more on publicity than in development, why?, because that's the way to reach the end-user market.
I Actually love the sound of computers (don't call it noise, it's not). Sunday morning, absolute silence, reading/., and the only thing i can here is my computer doing it's job. And it's a pretty noicy one (4 bays, 1m Tall Full Tower, 4 Fans, a Sempron 2200 Overclocked to 2100MHZ, with a Really Big (tm) Cooler. I have 2 disks, 2 CD-RW, and i use 2 400w power supplys to power it all)
Hitachis are not that bad, i thought the same you did about Hitachi first, but i tried them out, 2 40 gb Hitachi drives, for 2 different servers. They runned smoothly for about a year, 24*7, not a problem. I Quited my job, and a friend is now in charge there. AFAIK the disks are still there. And they are IDE drives, i expect even better results with SCSI ones...
If you really want bulletproof hardrives, just buy yourself a 2 gb Quantum BigFoot. It will just last forever.
it's really refreshing to hear from a non-capitalist/.er. I am a trotskyst, and i have studied and understand the history of the URSS (In Spanish it's called "Union de Repúblicas Socialistas Soviéticas"), and, no, i don't think it was a "corrupt dictatorship", i think that it was a beautiful dream, that had to survive a power-hungry capitalist empire, and that constant fight changed that dream into a nightmare in it's last years, it's the same that happends to Cuba right now, only in a different scale, and with different political power, the USA puts constant pressure on it, and so, the country dies slowly by it's own internal problems, the government, in order to prevent that, gets more and more intolerant, until the situation is uncontrollable, and so, the big monster of totalitarism strikes, and the USA wins easily.
In your opening you say "You may be already open minded enough to listen to this." Let me tell you something, most USA citizens AREN'T as open minded. My objective, was to defend Communism, and that is an ethical issue. I didn't mean to put other Political content on the post, so i tried to be fair when comparing the USA and the URSS. If you Say "BAD Capitalist Country" Vs. "Good Communist Paradise", NOONE will listen to you.
If you try to be imparcial, and make clear that they both made mistakes, and that they both were partys in a war, and take no position, then you can say other important things, and you will be listened.
I Would like to discuss this further in someplace other than this, (specially one where my karma is NOT in danger;-), and i have this self-impossed ethical rule of not posting as AC ).
Please drop me an e-mail (My contact info is in http://slashdot.org/~GNUALMAFUERTE) so i can contact you directly.
"This is not stated anywhere in the EULA or Terms of Use"
It is, Usually, in the part that says that any situation not specified in the EULA, will be decided in an unilateral fashion by the Company in question. Usually, when you agree with this kind of "contracts", you are actually agreeing to pay an ammount, in orther to be able to do what the company eventually decides that you can do.
My recomendation?, learn to be happy with tuxrace.
"Everyday it becomes more apparent that the growing success of Free Software threatens established proprietary software and media interests. These interests will continue to see our freedoms as threats, and we fully expect, and are preparing for, further challenges to our community."
It's good to see that he understands that the fight is not only ion the software field, but also on other subjects, such as books, images, or music. He talks about the new GPL, i would also like to see improvements on the GFDL to make it more suitable to other kind of media, and other kind of books, such as literature (as it's right now, i see it more suitable and focused on tech documentation).
He seems to have his objetives clear, it's good to see that RMS has lawyal and intelligent people arround, many times people just discards rms's words, just because it's him saying it, and the enormous campaign against him over the last years has convinced many people into looking at him like a crazy zealot, and just not hearing to what he has to say. Maybe having other people saying some things to the media would be a smart move.
Yhea, all nice and everything, but in those times you didn't have such incredible chances to do bussines arround the world like you have today!, for example, right now i'm in negotiations with this nice guy from nigeria to help him manage his bank account in the USA. BTW, that counts as consulting, right?.

I Speak Spanish.
In Spanish, it's "Union de Repúblicas Socialistas Sovieticas" (URSS), and not "Union of Soviet Socialist Republics" (USSR), as it's in english.
If you don't understand that international politics are NOT the USA vision of the world, then don't post, or at least please google before you flame.
