In case you havent noticed, what they are talking about is the concept of machiavelli "the prince" which is basically "The goal justifies the means" meaning that often the ones in power may occlude ethics in order to "achieve a greater good" killing the ill is a perfect example of it (a technique that was sadly used by the nazis) of course in practice this has never worked (at least not lately I hope) since most people do have strong ethics and will eventually rebel (by themselves or aided by their governor enemies) to stop such practices and take revenge. Which is more or less what happened in WW2 (I think, Im uneducated in the subject) , the horror stories of the nazis fueled the allied forces to destroy their growing empire and "free" mankind of their evil.
However in games: pfft! most gamers are pretty unethical about gaming since is an scape to their actual real life ethics, just look at what people have done in games like fable, b&w, tropico, kotor and even GTA (in which you are already a criminal to begin with) not only most gamers choosen to be truly evil if they had the choice, they even went beyond the developers expectations in their machiavellic thinking.
A perfect example: Peter Mollineux in an interview confessed he was stunned when certain gamers found out a way to kill an entire population of a village in Fable (an event thats not supposed to happen since towns are heavily guarded) and then manage to sell it back to new coming NPC's building by building amassing a virtual fortune in the process. (And of course the new NPCs would eventually get killed too) virtual genocide for fun and profit!
More horror histories can be found in B&W (like the world record of killing 1000 peasents in a single thunder strike) or GTA.
No Hilary, there isnt any more content in games like the hot coffee mod thats why it was interesting in the first place, yes I know thats what made you famous and you want to milk it as much as possible but you just CAN'T the well is dry, sorry.
No Hilary, you cant go to the developers offices and check if they are adding penises to their game models when nobody is watching it's anticonstitutional and is against the first ammendment the artists are (surpringsily enough) human beings and united states citizens. You can't impose Gestapo like rules on them because you think is convenient.
No Hilary, theres no way in hell we are voting for you for president, seriously, no way, not a slim chance, nada, zero, zip, not even if you get elected as the new pope, we would vote for Bush again before voting for you (and that is saying a lot).
Go back and do.. whatever it is you do when you are not trying to bring back the inquisition to the 21st century
BTW those games are rated "M" they are not intended for "children" which is whom your holy crusade suposedly tries to protect, children are not supossed to play those games with or without adult content, parents should be penalized for allowing their kids to play "M" games NOT game developers. How about if parents start acting like responsible adults for a change? instead of blaming the [insert scape goat of the week here] for their problems?
"Despite the usual "Japan hate US technology" trolls on here, the main reason why Xbox failed in Japan is that it didn't have games Japanese players wanted to play." Sorry, but the Xbox 360 is already having bad sales over in Japan actually some magazines reported people literally laughed at the xbox 360 during the x05 and leave their hall unattended most of the time. I think it has a lot to do with 2 facts that American and Japanese gamers have extremely different tastes. (FPS-RPGS, SPORTS-WACKY PUZZLES) and also the x360 is unattractive for japanese developers since it uses PC-MAC-like coding and developing style, which was almost abandoned in Japan almost since the birth of consoles.

The Revolution has the potential to reach this untapped market."
what? I admit theres a serious mistake on my "non-regular gamers" but any console aimed at non-regular gamers is bound to failure, why? because non-regular gamers DONT buy consoles, thats why, thats like making books for people who dont buy books. Therefore their only realistic market still lies in Kids and Fans the same way it has always been.
I wouldnt call "non-gamer" normal people, gamers are normal people too. Gamers are not some kind of a exclusive demographic, anyone who likes games and plays them in a regular basis is a gamer. disregarding age, sex or beliefs.
Heres my predictions for this next generation (ps it takes a monkey to predict this):
*Xbox 360 will have terrible sales in Japan, Ps3 will beat it by a landslide and Nintendo will follow.
*The revolution controller wont be enough for Nintendo to beat Sony or MS only a few games will use it as advertised still kids and non-regular gamers will go crazy with it.
*Nintendo will keep pleasing fans but alienating third parties and the teen/mature market, the online service will be a success but the lack of mature/third party games will keep the revolution at bay.
*The PSP will eventually have a bigger better game library and act as a ps3 controller , the price will drop and a new version will be announced, still somehow it wont beat Nintendo at the handhelds market.
*Gizmondo and Ngage2 will flop.
*Phantom will never exist, after much talk the project will be cancelled , the producers will end up in criminal investigation sued by their own investors.
*Duke Nukem forever will be released for the x360 and people will be underwhelmed with it still it will sell very well then dissapear, a sequel will be announced and it will take 10 years or so to be released.
*Halo 3 will leave fans disapointed still it will sale a few million copies after a huge marketing campaign. The multiplayer will be amazing though. (although pretty much the same than halo2)
*Ps3 graphics will be EXACTLY the same than those in 360 in most cases, it WONT have a hdd and games will be $10 more expensive, hardcores will still buy it like fresh baked bread. (most ps3 games will use a regular dvd instead of blue ray)
*The ps3 will eventually beat MS in the console wars, the best RPG's and japanese titles will go to it, MS will still have a secure second place Nintendo will keep in third although their profits will be a lot bigger.
*EA will keep creating mostly crappy licensed multiconsole games, although some of them will be relatively good. the next Madden and Tony hawk will be announced.
*MS will announce Blue ray support for their next console, Nintendo will announce HDTV support for their next console and Sony will announce HDD support for their next console.
So pretty much, things will be pretty much the same waythey are now.
Sorry guys, but I think Nintendo (and its fans) are overreacting quite a bit about its controller. 3 reasons
1.-Even if all the ways of gameplay shown in the revolution trailer worked (most of them are just theories) it will still be tiresome trial and error before developers would (if ever) get those right and make them fun as well, meanwhile they will feel and play like experiments.
2.-ITS JUST A CONTROLLER, how difficult is it for a peripheral like this to be made for the PC, the PS2 or the xbox? legally all they would have to do is to use another method for getting the signal and they wouldnt be violating the patent.
3.-It has already been done, the DS has two screens and an stylus for control, a nice novelty yes, did it changed portable gaming forever? NO, not even in the very DS the 2 screens or the stylus are not used in a significant way in most games, I mean seriously how important is to scribble spells in Castlevania to make it enjoyable? how much do you need to check the map all the time? wouldnt be the same to have a transparent overlay on top?
Seriously guys this is the 21st century if Nintendo wants to gain the market back, they have to do better than that.
IMO they could
*Reduce the console price with the same components than competition. (a cheap ps3? count me in!) *Cater a lot more for third party developers specially for adult/teen market. (can I play the latest GTA or FPS in it? no not halo , but at least battlefield would be nice) *Connectivity, Free (or very cheap) international gaming service, enough said. (I think they are actually doing this one, thats good! but they are missing the other 2)
If Nintendo would be able to deliver that (and not just a controller to play the same games they've made in 20 years), just about anyone would be glad to go back to them.
If they dont want to or they make money otherwise, cool, but dont expect everyone to jump in the bandwagon just because of a controller. The sales of the xbox360 and the (sure bet behemont) incoming sales of the ps3 pretty much confirm that.
I just saw the cbs blob and it doesnt quite sound as an "anti gamer" episode to me, it clearly mentions "psychopats acting out a game" the bad guys are the "psychopaths" not the game, the game is just something they are imitating, if it had said "teens" or "innocent children" or "my innocent, innocent clients" then we will had a Jack Thompson like statement in all its glory. CSI is looking for some idiot serial killers acting out a game.
I would like to reserve judgement until I see the episode (which is difficult because I dont watch that show, not because is bad, I just find it too morbid for my taste.)
feel free to correct me Im im wrong. I ussually am
This may sound like a joke, but can you believe the FBA (the florida bar of lawyers) was completely unaware of all of the irregularities of Mr. Jack Thompson? his (extremely) violent videogame proposal, his blatant racism, calling gamers idiots, insults to almost anyone who contacted him, trying to send people to jail for sending him flame mail or by simply naming him in a webcomic (which is a blatant abuse of his power as an attorney) ending his emails with threats and explaining he had "congressmen on his side". The FBA had no idea about all that! (I kidd you not)! most of that info was sent to the BAR by the Penny arcade fans when he tried to send the webmasters to jail for paying up charity money on his name (after he had promised then refused to do it himself) NO ONE had ever considered sending those complaints to the adequate department! Oh and btw guess what was his answer to the FBA after they send him a warning letter?... he threatened them back. (I couldnt make this stuff up even if I tried)
Anyway Jack shenanigans have finally reached the mainstreams, he is losing support from sponsors, he has lose face to judges, juries and followers alike. (I seriously doubt Senator Clinton will ever return his calls after she finds out about his "modest game proposal") this is it. We are seing the END of this person who stepped into his 15 minutes of fame by bad mouthing everyone but himself so is no surprise he is stepping down bad mouthing everyone but himself.
If you check on the articles past year, you will notice every single article on the PSP predicted a shortage. Sony predicted a shortage, IGN, slashdot , etc. They even pulled "anti -shortage" schemes one psp per customer,no change of PSP for dead pixels, etc.
Does anyone remember having any problem to find a PSP on xmas?
They do that based on PRE-SELLS only, and yes I bet there will be a "shortage" on pre-sells, since fans buy their stuff on those, but Alas regular people dont. Stores have bundles of those in the ware houses, and it turns out regular people wont buy them. So if you want one, dont "pre buy" it , just walk to any store and buy it, Im sure there will be plenty to go by.
Thank you Ken! Im glad the PS3 will be capable of running in 120 fps... in a newer tv set capable of handling that framerate (or a monitor) what you failed at mentioning was that just about any console (dreamcast, nintendo 64, xbox, xbox 360, etc) is capable of doing the same. the reason why they dont do that already is because tv's cant handle it. Im sure as soon as other developers realize this they will probably use it too. (revolution, ps3, xbox 360) thanks for the tip.
Not that it helps on anything. since in order to get that speed, you would have to waste twice as many valuable ticks, that could be used for better eye candy, loading, precaching or AI but hey! it runs at 120fps!
Dont bother clicking on the inquirer heres the entire article in full glory: MICROSOFT'S VOLE DRAMA ARMY DROPPEDa bombshell today in a backhanded way.
During a talk on multithreaded programming, Microsoft used the three core, two thread per core Xbox360 as an example.
The bombshell was that the first generation of Xbox titles, all of them, are single threaded. Not good.
The INQ has gotten its hands on an Xbox360, yes, there is a Wal-Mart near us, and was completely underwhelmed by the quality of the games. Graphics quality was poor, and pixels were showing up blocky, ruining the wow-factor of the new console.
Every new machine has a nasty first set of games as the programmers work up to speed on the hardware. In this case, the up side is that there is about 6x the CPU power available and coming to a console near you in the second generation of games.
The scary part is that everyone tells me that the PS3 is harder to program for than the Xbox360, and the tools are nowhere near the quality of Microsoft's. That means that even with an extra six months of design time, the initial PS3 games may be worse.
Translation: We went to wall mart played the thing for 5 seconds then wrote an article based on that and 90% guessing, since the PS3 is also a hot item we speculated it will be worse. since well... Jeff from accounting say it will.
You know Zonk, next time you read "MICROSOFT'S VOLE DRAMA ARMY" as the source of the article, you probably shouldn't even read it, much less post it here.
I dont know whats worse, Zonk being so uninterested in the article that he made the link to gamasutra instead (because probably that is what he was reading instead) or the incredibly ridiculous article he actually meant to link.
Summary: The revolution will be great! all of the previous motion detector controllers were plain trash, but somehow this is not! for some reason we are unable to explain coherently! (expand that to 6 pages)
Seriously 1up time to do research on your articles and getting interviews and facts OF THE NEW items instead of just speculating over the water dispenser and showing info about the 80's devices and movies you have in your garage (nobody cares!).
And no, you are not supposed to be proud over the last article in which you expent like 10 pages trying to guess what the fuck the revolution controller was like and were WRONG by a landslide. (seriously they werent even close!)
IMO: The revolution controller is great tech but only 10% (maybe less) of the games are going to use it properly, most of the time it will be used as an air joystick. (which defies the entire purpose of it) and even then is going to be a lot more tired to use that than an ordinary controller. Also third parties are probably going to be weary of porting to revolution due to it. (extra R&D and development costs)
And the entire webpage will get 0 visits in.. 5,4,3,2,1...
Sorry but I seriously doubt someone could be naive enough to release a CC just for seing a website. (unless is a payment site or is Actually a KID doing the visit) specially when several websites have the material, I dont really see how this could work in anyway for anyone. (except for hackers to have a grand opportunity at CC farming)
Ok, more reference, check Uwe Bowell movies, the next generation of game movies and the Doom movie, hollywood still has the idea that gamers are teenagers who use "Xtreme" as an adjective and consume beer and pizza (or other stimulants) instead of eating and sleeping. I think they got us mixed up with the surfers and skateboard stereotypes. If they depict a gamer in a movie (not just in one stupid scene), it will probably be under those characteristics. (check the ngage and block buster ads for further reference)
Stop generalizing. Not all games have macho heroes (ico-psychonauts, katamari) not all games have scantly clad women, not all games try to be movies there are tons of diferent games aimed at diferent audiences with different tastes.
What you are doing is the equivalent of comparing all movies to action/horror or even porn. You sound like this: " How come in every movie I see all the girls are desperate on having sex with some guy they just met? I mean seriously whats up with that? and why are people on their houses naked all the time?"
I dont know if you've heard, but right now the gaming industry is BEATING the movie industry. Right now people are a lot more hyped about getting their clutches on a "next gen" console and titles than in any movie coming this or next year.
And yes they are making halo 3, MGS4, GTA for PSP and DOA4 plan on banking several million bucks, apparently disregarding your "saving" extreme advices.
Ok first of all, why so many people bother to comment: "yeah this sets Sony with a door in the balls/thumbs/head etc) yeah I get the joke but unfortunately it's wrong, you are talking about SONY remember? the guys who made the PS2 and the coming PS3? a foot in the door? these guys have their entire body apendeages, relatives and dead corpses stucked in the door!
Second, the PSP isnt going anywhere, this is SONY we are talking about (not SEGA) even if they had released a handheld as bad as the N-gage (which is definetily not the case) they would still figure out a way to market it and make a buck. You think their handheld project is going under just because is selling a percenteage less than its direct competitor? (even NOKIA is still pulling out NGAGE's as we speak)
Third: Yes Nintendo DS is beating the PSP, why? for starters because its a whole lot CHEAPER. The PSP is as expensive as a home console so is _not logical_ to believe is going to get MORE sales as a system 1/3 of the price. Also the DS has a lot more titles yes, unfortunately most of them were ripped off directly from the GBA how many DS games are actually DS titles and not GBA ports ? 5? maybe 10?
Fourth: you are forgetting a small detail, this is just the first generation of the PSP. Sony eventually will DROP the PSP price, eventually more developers (and users) will adopt the PSP and more and BETTER GAMES will be released for it (GTA, GOD OF WAR, GT4, and TEKKEN are coming to it for starters), We havent seen nothing guys, this party is just getting started.
BTW Half of the industry is completely astounded by Sony not pushing the PSP further THIS year, but you can be sure Sony has a card under their sleave for it. (most analysts predict sony will show their PSP hand next year during the PS3 release )
p.s. Why are you guys still complaining about "dead pixels"? I heard those can be fixed by simply playing a small video that "wakes up" the dead pixels. the video is around the web, google it.
Hmm.. well I havent seen it that way but you are probably right, actually I think that explains a lot of things. And yes TV, dvd, movies and games are actually competitive as mediums.
You also have to realize that game companies themselves use the bad publicity. I remember an interview with American Mcgee a while ago in which he mentioned he used the controversial themes because young adults (teens) were naturally attracted to censored and taboo themes and that was their target market, of course he didnt used those words exactly but that was his point. Let me look around I think the article is around gamasutra somewhere.
p.s. Hey why are you my freak? can we all be friends?;)
film studios may be used to kowtowing to A-list actors' demands, but don't typically cave in to requests from non-Hollywood players. Initial reports saw the software giant asking for $10 million against 15 percent of the gross (whichever is higher), a below-the-line budget of $75 million (budget before hiring actors and crew), near-immediate production of the movie, and a large say in the creative development of the movie."
In other words: It will feature a very low and poorly used budget and will be about Master chief fighting human "mutant/infected" covenant as a member of a space SWAT team in mars (although the entire movie will take place indoors and in sewers) the "covenant" will be grown men wearing rubber chicken suits.
In really few words: it will SUCK so much people will think it was made back in 2003.
Im beginning to worry about 1up the place is aparently ran by Nintendo fanboys that make our own batch look "normal" in comparison.
1.- There is nothing UP on the PSP the damn thing is too expensive. Developers know that, users know that. wait for the price drop to see what the PSP is about.
2.-Lack of sales yep, but In the latest EGM I read the PSP games (as bad and few as they are!) are on the top 10.
Is a mystery why Sony decided to languish the first year of the PSP, but the console is definetily not in bad shape (all things considered) there are some major releases for the last quarter. (battlefront 2, gta) if you have a psp stick to it. you wont regreet it.
And if you have a DS stick to it too, where does it say you can only have one handheld?;)
As impressive as the engine looks, the big power behind it draws from the power of today high end PC's (ati x, geforce 7 sli combined with multiple CORE cpu's) you may want to sit down if you didnt know, but Its quite possible to do PS3 and X360 quality graphics on it TODAY, actually better than those.
Unfortunately the price is still in the high price range (but will drop eventually) so you probably want to wait before being awed by graphics such as this in your own monitor (check out the ati/nvidia sites for further info). however PC's will eventually beat consoles in the graphics dept (as always)
BTW That game is PC based.
Why does it look better than doom3 and UT engine? easy it uses THIS generation latest tech , doom3, source and UT use the prior generation tech but at least are capable of running in a Medium end PC.
On the game side I really have to aplaud S2 design, the game will be a weird mix between D&D and Halo. Imagine Halo with Dragons, magic arrows and Orcs instead of warthogs, needlers and covenants and you have a pretty good idea of what this will be like (how come no one thought about that before?).
On the negative side Im not sure I like the name and also their motto is wrong, The first Fantasy FPS was Heretic followed closely by Hexen. Im not sure Raven is going to be pretty happy with their trailer.
Anyway I wouldnt count out the next generation of console games NOT to include those effects in their engines, everybody knows each generation of console games is better than the last. Is going to be a neat contest.
And please spare me the "graphics dont make games" speech, we are talking about graphics here not gameplay.
Im glad my son is about to born in a world where a murderer CANT shoot someone in the head and come out of jail free because he blames it on a game or a movie, plus getting a few million bucks from a company as an extra bonus.
Finally! I hope this serves as an initiative for all attorneys to denegate cases such as this (and best of all IT REALLY IS) aaah! sigh of relief.
Im really happy we reached this point before someone went all the way to ban "M" rated games in America (dont laugh! it DID happened to the American comic industry during the 50-60's, where did you think the ultra silly TV Batman series came from?)
For all those Non believers, Millions of people (some of them real young unfortunately) watch, read or play violent fiction one way or the other however only 1% of them ever commit violent acts And those acts are ALWAYS (as in: IN ALL CASES) related to other factors such as: extreme Racism, lack of Values, extreme poverty, access to dangerous weapons or tools, mental illness, etc. They are not driven by a "mystical" force. They are not forced in to it by anyone or anything, it has been proved they commit such acts on their own WILL. (painful as it may be) and thats what this judge has FINALLY come into senses to.
A good day, really.
Hmm.. I wonder if Jack Thompson is considering to go back to his old job: chasing ambulances and "tripping" in his neighbors houses.
GNN Reports: "Some doctors say the guy could have died for not eating or actually after a 50 hour marathon with his heart condition he could have died doing macrame or just walking but for the sake of sensationalism lets just blame the evil, evil videogames, actually word is he was playing GTA with the eating babies mod."
-"Terrible, terrible news Katie, Im changing the headline to "Horrible game kills man", In other news a man stabbed himself in the chest 20 times while playing Mario bros and died, relatives are suing Nintendo and religious nutcases are demanding congressmen to ban the game."
In case you havent noticed, what they are talking about is the concept of machiavelli "the prince" which is basically "The goal justifies the means" meaning that often the ones in power may occlude ethics in order to "achieve a greater good" killing the ill is a perfect example of it (a technique that was sadly used by the nazis) of course in practice this has never worked (at least not lately I hope) since most people do have strong ethics and will eventually rebel (by themselves or aided by their governor enemies) to stop such practices and take revenge. feel free to correct me Im im wrong.
Game over Mr. Thompson, we wont miss you.
If you check on the articles past year, you will notice every single article on the PSP predicted a shortage. Sony predicted a shortage, IGN, slashdot , etc. They even pulled "anti -shortage" schemes one psp per customer ,no change of PSP for dead pixels, etc.
Im glad the PS3 will be capable of running in 120 fps ... in a newer tv set capable of handling that framerate (or a monitor) what you failed at mentioning was that just about any console (dreamcast, nintendo 64, xbox, xbox 360, etc) is capable of doing the same. the reason why they dont do that already is because tv's cant handle it.
Dont bother clicking on the inquirer heres the entire article in full glory:
MICROSOFT'S VOLE DRAMA ARMY DROPPEDa bombshell today in a backhanded way.
And the entire webpage will get 0 visits in ..
I already went to www.3drealms.com forums,
p ?Cat=0&Number=960968&an=0&page=0#960968
http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/showflat.ph
They've already denied the release date, the inquirer went into extra happy mode for an amazon website mistake, end of story. Move along folks.
No . next question.
And yes TV, dvd, movies and games are actually competitive as mediums.
;)
You also have to realize that game companies themselves use the bad publicity. I remember an interview with American Mcgee a while ago in which he mentioned he used the controversial themes because young adults (teens) were naturally attracted to censored and taboo themes and that was their target market, of course he didnt used those words exactly but that was his point. Let me look around I think the article is around gamasutra somewhere.
p.s. Hey why are you my freak? can we all be friends?
film studios may be used to kowtowing to A-list actors' demands, but don't typically cave in to requests from non-Hollywood players. Initial reports saw the software giant asking for $10 million against 15 percent of the gross (whichever is higher), a below-the-line budget of $75 million (budget before hiring actors and crew), near-immediate production of the movie, and a large say in the creative development of the movie."
/infected" covenant as a member of a space SWAT team in mars (although the entire movie will take place indoors and in sewers) the "covenant" will be grown men wearing rubber chicken suits.
In other words: It will feature a very low and poorly used budget and will be about Master chief fighting human "mutant
In really few words: it will SUCK so much people will think it was made back in 2003.
Im beginning to worry about 1up the place is aparently ran by Nintendo fanboys that make our own batch look "normal" in comparison.
;)
1.- There is nothing UP on the PSP the damn thing is too expensive. Developers know that, users know that. wait for the price drop to see what the PSP is about.
2.-Lack of sales yep, but In the latest EGM I read the PSP games (as bad and few as they are!) are on the top 10.
Is a mystery why Sony decided to languish the first year of the PSP, but the console is definetily not in bad shape (all things considered) there are some major releases for the last quarter. (battlefront 2, gta) if you have a psp stick to it. you wont regreet it.
And if you have a DS stick to it too, where does it say you can only have one handheld?
As impressive as the engine looks, the big power behind it draws from the power of today high end PC's
(ati x, geforce 7 sli combined with multiple CORE cpu's) you may want to sit down if you didnt know, but Its quite possible to do PS3 and X360 quality graphics on it TODAY, actually better than those.
A really good day. Good job judge.
Finally! I hope this serves as an initiative for all attorneys to denegate cases such as this (and best of all IT REALLY IS) aaah! sigh of relief. Im really happy we reached this point before someone went all the way to ban "M" rated games in America (dont laugh! it DID happened to the American comic industry during the 50-60's, where did you think the ultra silly TV Batman series came from?) For all those Non believers, Millions of people (some of them real young unfortunately) watch, read or play violent fiction one way or the other however only 1% of them ever commit violent acts And those acts are ALWAYS (as in: IN ALL CASES) related to other factors such as: extreme Racism, lack of Values, extreme poverty, access to dangerous weapons or tools, mental illness, etc.
Its a JOKE the whole site is made of articles with the "sarcasm" tag on the beginning, get it? none of it is to be taken seriously.
Of course as my wife explained to me once jokes are based on subconscient thought so there is a lot of truth (or wishful thinking) hidden in there.
