it's because filesharing is LINKED to global warming! the more we do it, the more global warming, the more the terrorists win, the more we welcome our robotic overlords!
as a college student, I ran on as little as 2-4 hours of sleep at night. I had taken a bunch of extra credits, had a 15 hour a week part time job, another 24 hour a week part time job, and was involved in a few campus organizations. sleep was a luxury. my day would involve several 44 oz cups of pepsi, at least one bottle of green tea, and occasionally a grande cup of coffee from the university starbucks.
when I went home for christmas break, I was in such pain that I doubled over and laid on my side without having a reason why. as soon as I got myself a coke or pepsi, I was ok.
after that, I went on a caffeine hiatus for about 2 1/2 years before even taking any caffeinated products again. I just didn't want to fall into that same trap. I'm glad that I was able to kick my habit, but the old adage rings true: moderation is the key.
I still prefer drinking decaffeinated teas and such, and occasionally I get a headache from taking in too much caffeine if I have a strong cup of coffee or something, but it's nice every once in a while. just not every day.
are you sure? wouldn't the people who offer to opt-in just be targets? sure, they may be ok with legalizing songs shared by the SAC, but now they are basically saying "hi, I'm a target, and I probably also illegally torrent movies and software."
call me skeptical, but this is just opening the door for more levies, and hopefully this gets struck down.
p.s. who's to say that they don't opt out and still fileshare? will they get penalized, or just be forced into the plan? what if the plan changes in the future and now the music/film industry have a mccarthy list of who to go after first?
it's all good. at least this ended in a civil manner. kudos to neither of us going insane and creating a huge flamewar.
and as I said, I can understand your frustrations. best of luck on the project, and I will be interested in the (more) final version once it comes out. I might even give the beta another go-round and see what it's like once I get hooked into the server. thanks for adjusting that for us non-aussies =)
one of the first bands I heard judiciously use overdubs but not fill that gap in live was rage against the machine, when I was growing up. I know tons of bands have done it, but they were always the most noticeable to me. tom morello would play some wacky lead guitar solo, and on the records, he'd also layer 2-3 extra rhythm tracks just backing him up. live, it sounded so thin, but then again, you'd just want to see him solo, right?
but yeah, tons of bands do several overdubs. but I feel at least the ones I listen to now [and not the ones I listened to when I was in middle/high school] do a better job at translating it live.
I was gonna say to mod GP up because clicktrack is NOT multitrack, but he inserted an opinion that may be seen as flamebait or troll, so nevermind:)
you can do multi-track recording with isolation, but have everyone in the same room. someone screws up, they re-record their part. that's what my band's doing. and when you go in to re-do your part, you can see the waveforms to get the timing. it's not "perfect vibe," but definitely not requiring the hold band to go again.
actually even with "live" recordings [as in, no click track], still most people go to do overdubs, and vocals sometimes are not even recorded in the take unless necessary. if anything, they're a scratch track so they can be re-recorded.
I'm definitely enjoying this topic; I just gotta fight the urge to respond to everything:)
ironically, pete townshend was the human click track for the who. I can't remember where I read the article, but it was basically pete playing the stuff in time, and john and keith doing their thing, and playing to HIM. that's pretty cool.
I have no hate or love for click tracks. some bands do awesome things with it, others make it sound mechanical. you can do complex odd-time signature clicktracks with sophisticated software these days, and even adjust the tempo smoothly in cool programs like logic or even nuendo/cubase. that being said, my band recorded our first album to a click and this one will not have any clicktrack whatsoever. as an artist, YMMV depending on what kind of music you're doing.
actually, that's why I like shows from the UK such as the office. they decided 'hmmm, let's write for two seasons and call it a close.' I wish more american programs did that. I'm sure it'd be cool to have like 12 seasons of a great show [such as it's always sunny in philadelphia], but sometimes it's best to go out on top.
give the writers something fresh to write about after those few seasons, because obviously they have proven that they can write great stuff. I'd rather see fresh new shows with new characters and maybe a majority of the same writers than 38 seasons of say, the simpsons. we're in an age where people get bored quickly.
that being said, I wish dirty sexy money got a resolution before it was axed =\
1. I doubt you'll read this now, but when I clicked 'update' for the servers, it said 'THE MASTER SERVER IS DOWN.' I tried about 4 times before I created the localhost match [as in update and refresh].
2. I did try other maps besides overseer, and still no one had died, so that's why I made that gripe.
3. I didn't know about holding the key in. I'll give that a try next time. That, you got me on.
4. I came onto the IRC briefly to see if anyone was there. seeing that I didn't see you or acord there, I figured it was moot issuing my comments and parting, so I put it up with more permanence by posting it on slashdot, and I think I even left that on the IRC chan.
5. I did see the bot difficulty. I didn't choose just one. I don't like when people make assumptions about me, just as you don't like "misinformation." Thanks for actually thinking that I would just keep hitting "add bot" until my fingers went numb without playing with the settings first.
if you didn't sound condescending replying to everyone, perhaps more people would be inclined to write nice responses to you here. at first, I felt bad for you and your team, releasing what looks to be a cool game and dealing with some jerks complaining about the web design or whatever, instead of the game itself. now I just feel that you guys are one of those pretentious "games are art" people that don't care if the gameplay works, you just want people to like your work, and if they complain, they just "don't get it." (DISCLAIMER: of course, I don't speak for your whole team, as I've only had written correspondence from you, and that may not be the case at all, but that is the impression that is given off from reading the other comments and responses.)
I like artful games. I like games that make you think. I don't like devs thinking I'm some sort of incompetent clod that doesn't at least mess around with a few options and settings. it's a beta. I am not only trying to play around with whatever is available, but who knows, maybe some setting even "breaks" it, and you guys would want that feedback, no?
as stated previously, I'll be interested in what happens with the project once you guys get past the beta stage, but hopefully you can deal with the nitpicking a little better at that point.
I can understand the frustrations of writing software, but you can't expect everyone to say "ZOMG BEST THING EVAR" when it's a beta, just like you said. take a look at google chrome and tell me it's had an "easy" life from the devs. doubt it.
there's other posts above; safari is not pushing version 4 through the apple updater [only version 3]. that doesn't mean I dislike it any less, as you and your wife do.
1. The servers were down, so I had to create a localhost match. No problem, it's still early in the morning on a Sunday.
2. For some reason, I get 14 FPS even though I'm running a dualcore computer with a 512 MB videocard. Okay, but at least I can play the game. I try turning off basically everything and adjusting the res. I wish it didn't require a re-start of the game to change res. Quake 3 Arena and UT handled this well by popping out to desktop then launching back in-game to adjust the res. I would recommend this. I know you said its a libs issue.
3. I agree with all comments that the weapons are well, lacking. I added three bots in a FFA style match. No one died. I played for about 10-15 minutes and NO ONE DIED. We were all in the same area, taking shots at each other, and nothing was happening except a lot of gunfire and not much else.
4. I also agree that item pickup shouldn't be done with the action key. You have to STOP movement to do so otherwise you run over the weapon. If you want to make it like Halo and have the person pick and choose what they want, but only one or two weapons, that's fine. But if you allow people to carry 5 weapons, seriously, why go for that "realistic feel" when you've already made it unrealistic because you can carry up to 5 guns on your back anyhow?
5. The bots: Well, they act like humans, if you mean bunnyhopping humans who don't know what they're doing. They jump a lot, making it hard to hit them. Okay. But they also miss shooting me. Very noob-like, basically like when an expert player tells a noob 'hey, you should jump to evade fire' but then the noob does it ALL THE TIME. Which goes back to the earlier point, make the weapons a little bit more effective.
6. What's with the dark doorways? They basically lead nowhere [I'm talking about the overseer map, for example].
7. Where was the damn flamethrower? Do the weapons not respawn or something? Or did the bot just start with it?
8. The sound on that starting blaster is ANNOYING. That's just a personal gripe, maybe the whole key is to want to get a different weapon. The chaingun sounds better.
that being said, I can understand a lot of the comments here better now. I do hope you guys can fix these bugs, because eventually, it might be a fun game to play. but for right now, I think I'll keep my mind occupied with something else.
if it doesn't kill your artistic vision for the game, I will go back to my previous comment and say, use some brighter colors! if the future is gonna all be gray and black colors, I am not gonna want to live in it:)
well, I wasn't trying to make it seem like all/.ers are bad people. just take everything with a grain of salt and expect complaints about things that don't even matter.
also realize lots of people don't RTFA. imagine them giving you hints on what to do with your game before they even go to your website;)
did they also think that maybe she was an attractive woman and tired of getting hit on by guys she was clearly not interested in? regardless if she was gay or not, there should be no grounds for banning someone for saying what they are. if you don't like them, don't play with them. EOF.
I'm willing to try it. but based on your comment replies to others, it sounds like you don't like the feedback of 'DO NOT WANT' or 'rather play quake.'
this is SLASHDOT after all. no one is going to play nice just because you're giving them something free.
make a free windows game. people will ask 'does it run on linux?' make it for linux. one person will ask if it runs on macs (without bootcamp/windows). make it run on all 3 platforms. people will complain about level design. include a level designer. people will complain that the interface is too clunky or not deep enough, of course, without paying a dime or contributing to the code.
this is what you have to look forward to. I'm all for trying new things [and I will try your game this weekend], but you have to expect that you'll get backlash just because people want something to complain about, even if it's free. that just makes me sad.
I do hope that it ends up working out for you, although I do have to agree, based on the screenshots, why does everyone want to be dark and gray/brown in games. what happened to colors? it doesn't have to look like far cry or anything, but can we get some more interesting colors and textures in games these days? looking forward to the gameplay though, let's see if your souped-up AI does more than just cheat, like in other games...
I'm a windows user and can see the writing on the wall here. Ballmer and MS get shellacked over destroy this, closing that, etc. all they're doing is saying "hey, other people do it, why not go after them?"
I don't necessarily agree with the guy, but should companies really have rigid control of SDK's and what's allowed for their devices when people are writing free applications to enrich the community? iphone, xbox, whatever. sure, there's chances for a lot more junk, but who says that the devs that pay for SDK's for various devices aren't putting out junk already?
wait a minute. what's this "friends" thing about? just because I modded you insightful or interesting once or twice doesn't mean you can come over for my backyard BBQ's.
friends don't let friends make friends on slashdot.
It is one of the most advanced professional worms to date.

first whoosh?
the cake is a goddamned lie.
don't forget to place blame on piracy! instead of actually paying devs and setting a realistic deadline.
I think after 3b is the ???? because your profit comes before the company folds, and then you can blame these things.
You're taking the piss right out of it!
are you sure? wouldn't the people who offer to opt-in just be targets? sure, they may be ok with legalizing songs shared by the SAC, but now they are basically saying "hi, I'm a target, and I probably also illegally torrent movies and software."
