This theory doesn't match the evidence in this case, though. Piracy has skyrocketed over the years, but the gaming industry has shown no signs of approaching anything near a situation where it's "no longer tenable to make games and no one has a game to play." On the contrary, it's gotten bigger and bigger as well. Even in this age where thousands and thousands of both legally and illegally free games exist for all sorts of different platforms, big titles like CoD Black Ops are seeing record sales. There's very clearly something about the economics of this situation that the old theories and models are missing.

Go try some things out, find what you love. Changing careers != unemployment; your kids aren't going to starve to death, and (so long as you keep spending the time with them that they need) a pay cut is not going to make their developmental environment any less healthy.

Talk to your wife and kids about it, sure. But don't let people over-exaggerate the risks involved, or tell you that "being responsible" = forsaking your own needs. If anything, you have a responsibility to your kids to provide them with a happier, more emotionally-fulfilled parent as a role model. That's far more important to their needs than a slightly higher level of financial security could ever be.

What's worse, the 'ballot' was filled w/ the current top 10 vote-getters (in their current order) by default, so I'm guessing a lot of lazy vote-casters (like myself) ended up giving videos they'd never seen undue credit.

As for the results of this study, lab mice are not humans, and correlation does not imply cause... both mice and humans must have evolved to have their normal body temperature for a reason, so lowering it will undoubtedly have some negative effect on the chances of survival.

I don't think you can say outright that making changes to the way we've evolved will lower our chances of survival.

The modern world is different than the one we evolved in, and what was once advantageous may not be anymore. Take our taste for fatty foods, for example - obviously, in an environment where food was scarce and the possibility of building up excess body fat was very low, this was an advantage in the quest for survival. But now that things have changed, the taste for fat probably ends up killing a lot more people than it saves.

This may not apply to our bodies' temperature regulation, of course - one would think that our optimal temperature is was it is, regardless of outside conditions - but I still don't think we can rule out the possibility of room for improvement. Who's to say that evolution has gotten everything perfect? Maybe 98.6 wasn't the 'optimal' temperature, but was still 'good enough' for us to survive long enough to breed and pass on our genes.

My point is, there could be something to this. Correlation may not *prove* cause, but it can certainly imply the *possibility* of it.

The job market is another good example of this; employers look for people w/ x number of years experience, not x amount of skill. Of course, maybe that's because in the real world, years - not quality - of experience is one of the only measurable, reliable indicators of skill that's available. Education is another one, but to get recognizable, certified education on your resume also requires time (sometimes more than some people require for 'on their own' learning that gets them the same amount of real knowledge). Although I do agree that games like WoW tend to put *too* much emphasis on time spent over actual skill development, I can't agree with the article's statement that the lesson this teaches isn't applicable to the "real world".
