I am a very satisfied subscriber of AOL Broadband - I see it as a convenient means of accessing new videos, ent, love the games and AOL Radio. Oh, the fact that I get an AOL proxy address everytime I start the AOL browser is nice too;)
I'm not a noob, just like the service and can afford it.
Suprnova has had wierd ads for sometime now - Heightmax being the most common. I guess now ee'll see ads for media from the RIAA & MPAA, with little trackbacks embedded
Close from the flight-away resort island of Atlantis - only $69.99 - Edgar Cayce predicted in the 1960s that Atlantis would be found near the Bimini Atoll. Researchers did indeed find underwater ruins there - ref. Colin Wilson's The Atlantis Blueprint (no associate link).
The theme of a synthesis between ancient civilizations leads one to believe that there is indeed a proto-civilization based in Atlantis. Not sure if they take Visa, though.
I'm running the 'alternate route' - I've had excellent tech support - he helped me set it up via phone - static IP addressing for my network devices behind the VOIP router, which is connected to the broadband router.
I've had VOIP from Lingo for 3 months now - $19.99 per month - free US & Europe - couldnt live without it. I cancelled my landline after a week. Very satisfied and referred VOIP to many people.
My company has been on VOIP globally for a while now. Definitely reaching critical mass now.
The system would not work outside the Western world, though, with the spotty coverage, limited bandwidth and power (electricity) problems that do exist.
Here are the stats for browser access to my site for the last two weeks:
988 MSIE 6.0
738 Firefox 0.10.
243 Safari 1.2
219 Mozilla 5.0
122 Firefox 0.9.3
103 Firefox 1.0
86 Firefox 1.0RC
60 Firefox 0.8
36 Firefox 0.9.2
29 Firefox 0.9.1
28 Opera 7.54
26 MSIE 5.5
22 Firefox 0.9
Of course, mine gets more net-savvy people. The corresponding numbers for another site I help admin - one that mostly gets non-techie types (adult site):
2032 MSIE 6.0
201 Firefox 0.10.
103 Mozilla 5.0
80 Netscape 7.1
68 MSIE 5.5
57 Netscape 7.2
53 Safari 1.2
39 Firefox 0.9.3
32 Netscape 6.2.2
30 MSIE 5.0
27 Firefox 1.0
23 Netscape 7.02
22 Opera 7.54
18 Firefox 0.9.2
14 Safari 1.0
13 Opera 7.11
10 MSIE 5.23
Quite some difference in usage levels. But evidently IE does have a threat from Firefox.
If you don't know already, you can track most takedown notices at http://www.chillingeffects.org/. A search for google there brings back a lot of results.
Google has slackened at its game. Even the text ads are not remotely relevant in many places. For example, my blog has ads for salad & low-carb meals on the front page for no obvious reason.
I find the yahoo search engine delivers more accurate results nowadays. Strange, if they use google.
IMO, it's not that the images are not there, but that Google's spider is sleeping on the job. Damn! Shelob would have a field day!
Metafilter is having a similar discussion (slashdot - where news gets old fast).
IMO, there are 3 kinds of blogs - journals (I ate 3 eggs today), notebooks (opinions, articles, etc.) and filters (sites of links). Slashdot combines all 3. Also, we, the readers are often treated to intensely personal content. Multiple streams of information compete on slashdot, provided by multiple sources.
I'm almost afraid to post to an Apple thread for fear of the Apple zealots (applets?), but here goes.
Opinions can be formed one way or another about the convenience of seamless integration to a single source - the same would be called poor design by a software architect. iTunes is a good product though, and I still use it occasionally, although I don't use an iPod. Windows Media Player 10 does the job for me just fine - particularly since I have a variety of media to manage & I especially like the "Sync To List" feature for my Creative. There is also the facility to purchase music from a variety of stores - using hte iTMS-pioneered model of course.
The iPod design is actually mimicked quite closely by the Creative players, which is not necessarily a bad thing. It will move a few off the iPod platform come Black Friday.
I personally prefer managing my music on my PC Jukebox only because it's a large screen, and I can design my playlists everyday and have only a few songs - then change them again. That's just me.
So, the Creative Zen whatever(clonenames) is an able contender to unseat the leader, but not significantly an improvement over any other.
How do they get the IP Addresses of those sharing? Do they have to also download the torrent, start downloading/sharing via a BT client, start noting IP addresses (no more than 20-30) connected to their BT client and thereby facilitate the sharing?
Also, what if you download a file via a BT client and then delete the torrent or the file - does the tracker know that you are no longer sharing?
It is not as straightforward as merely replacing one source of energy with another. While oil is running out (I highly recommend The End Of Oil), the alternatives like nuclear fuel have greater risks. Of course, some of the risks can be mitigated by proper management, but this is one case where the risks outweigh possible benefits.
A good paper on Sustainable Energy Policies is here
One option that was much raised in the price shock of the 1970s was to minimize energy waste. Unfortunately, that seems to have fallen by the wayside.
Marc Faber, Dr Doom, warns that we could see $100 oil and this could be the setting for World War III. I've discussed some economic implications of this here
I must confess - I am not a novice at the net - I've been on the Net for many years - I'm on a broadband connection, with all the protection one needs, and my own blog.
But
I subscribe to AOL for Broadband. Mostly for the content - Newspass, music, video. I had it free for 6 months - I'm paying 14.99 now.
Ok! I surrender! Tt makes no sense! I'm gonna call and cancel! - if they let me.
How did the democrats come out stronger? They lost the presidency (again), lost seats in the House, lost seats in the Senate - including the minority speaker for the first time in 52 years. This election has shown one thing clearly, the majority of americans are tired of the left wing liberals.
Stronger in that they were able to revitalize themselves after the disarray over the last four years, find a plank, identify new leadership(Edwards?) - they will (hopefully) move on from the 'stolen election' theme.
The mood with everyone I see - online & offline is Tired out, knackered and conflicted.
The talking heads never stop! Make them stop!!
Ref the Kerry concession,
There is gracefulness under defeat, and there is a comparison to a similar experience 4 years ago - the Democrats come out stronger and the talking heads are silenced and turned topsy turvy.
Everyone wins, but in the long term, a redefinition is needed of the rules of the game.
I've been trying to update my blog for a while now - very difficult - traffic, etc.
I wish Kevin Smith would do a DVD on the Star Wars DVD set - his riffs on Star Wars in his films are just marvelous
I know he's supposed to be making a Star Wars TV Series, but that still won't compare to thoughts on Contract Labor on the Death Star, Silent Bob trying to pick up the tape through the use of the force and so many other references.
Film-crit is a time-honored tradition - DVD-crit is more recent, and possibly debatable.
Let's put it this way - it creates a culture of fear. Of course, a lot of that is because of the hype and media manipulation by partisan entities. However, there is still a level of uncertainty among minorities.
Sundance has a film running on this theme that has a few illustrations
First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out--because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the communists
and I did not speak out--because I was not a communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out--because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me--
and there was no one left to speak out for me.
Basically, that is the concern that causes some people to speak out about the Patriot Act.

Or do they contract with spammers?
Perhaps they run afoul of the brown-paper law
"Yes, Mr Blofeld"
"SMERSH wins again! Number 4, telephone our client and tell them the acquisition is out."

No problem at all

XBox Nation has a middling review of Halo 2, although they've given it the obvious 10 out of 10.
I'm not that surprised - Secretly, I'm waiting for GTA:SA on the XBOX myself, not the new chief on the box and I've blogged thus.
An interesting case is booble.com - sent a takedown notice by google and now reopened as tauntedbytatas.com

So, I'd call it a group blog, similar to http://www.metafilter.com/metafilter.

Since the FCC is (currently) Republican, except harder regulation in the upcoming Presidential term on VOiP carriers.
It's a stretch though, to imagine that Democrats are larger VOIP users than Republicans - that's data mining carried to the extreme.
Mirroring helped
Aljazeera was also down, per Netcraft
I've blogged live about Internet Load all day on my blog today
Good stuff, Howard - I've blogged it on my site - let's see how far off you'll be
