Sweet! That means if I visit friends at Yahoo! or Microsoft, I can also drink $5 bottles of water and eat a variety of snacks that I would normally find too expensive to purchase for myself.

People can't tell the difference between IE 6 and IE 5.5 from my experience. People that read Slashdot are not your normal computer users. I know people still using Netscape Communicator 4.7, because they were better than IE way back when. It's similar to the music industry argument. Were people that pirate going to buy in the first place? If not, the record industry didn't lose any money or market. Will MS lose market share from those that were never going to upgrade anyway?

I don't know how software works, but with other products in China, they are the real thing, not just copies. Instead of shutting down the factory for clothes and purses, they keep it running and sell the products real cheap. It covers their costs and then some. Where do big software vendors have their software made and packaged?

at least a platform that adopts some open standards will overtake Windows eventually While Apple does use a lot of open standards, they also use proprietary ones as well. Even with the open standards, they market it in such a way that many people believe on Apple can use it. Look at AAC with iTunes. A lot of people I know thought one of the A's stood for Apple and that iTunes was the only thing that could play it.

While Firefox renders according to standards, people don't write to standard. .NET applciations are a big example of things that won't work in Firefox. OpenOffice is something I installed for my dad at home when he got his new computer. It didn't cut it. He had to move his spreadsheet graphs into his slide shows and it was too much hassle with OO. Really, the decision belongs to the end user. If it saves them money or time and accomplishes the task, I say switches are fine, but not all the applications that are open source take care of it. Someone told me one, "No one gets fired for choosing Microsoft." It's true, unless you're at Apple. =)
