Thats why Im on the computer, finding like minded people around the world. If my hobbies change to domestic violence and drug dealing then I'll go hang out with my neighbours.
"There's also mention of a headset, so you won't look ridiculous..."
I'm no fashion guru, but I can tell you that people talking using a headset most certainly do look ridiculous. It didn't look cool in the 80's. It doesnt look cool now.
Not only have they been selling them for months, they have also been advertised on slashdot (via thinkgeek) for months.
But perhaps this story was okayed with good intentions. You should not attribute to advertising what can be more easily be explained by slashdot editors.
Even if it is, it's still a plus for Sun and open source in general - people will begin to realise that if MS begins offering discounts for sticking with them, then the alternatives must be pretty dang good.
This article was one guys opinion on whats wrong with games today. And no slashdotters have been giving him any shit for his views? Whats going on?
Ill tells ya whats going on - he only pointed out and praised games that did things right, without spouting on about why Halo gives him the shits (for example).
It really made this article a good read. Maybe a good tip for you journos out there!
Venkman: Egon, this reminds me of the time you tried to drill a hole through your head. Remember that?
Spengler: That would have worked if you hadn't stopped me.
I dont know about that. My computer was assembled by me and contained no OS when I bought it. Probably a good chunk of linux users are in the same boat.
And if you consider the stats from Google's zietgeist, it really can't be too many.
I lived in Osaka for a couple of years and I felt safe at all times. Even to the point of leaving my laptop on the bag holders in one carriage of a packed train and sitting in a chair in another carriage.
But I also worked near a school where one of the kids snapped and cut the head off another student and stuck it on the front gates of the school.
When bad rarely happened. But when they did they really seemed fucked up. Perhaps this is what inspires tagging kids?
Judging by the first 30 posts are we to assume that maybe the 1000x speed increase isnt to do with Linux? And, oh here comes the next 30 saying "Its not about the speed increase, its about Linux exposure to upper management..."!
I wish I could find my bag of "redundant" modifiers.
I hope you recheck this posts to get this, because wow what a shit response you got from slashdotters! I have been trying to do the same thing for the last week or so and have found some good resources. Wierd that all the slashdotters say is "get hard drive". Yeah, thanks for that one!
One of the best resources I've found so far is over at damnsmalllinux.org (in the forum, here
they have a pretty good how-to on this. I also found a really good discussion of it in the Gentoo forums somewhere, but I forgot to sync my firefox bookmarks today, so I don't have it.
For the project Im working on I can't use a hard drive, but Ive got heaps of memory - so Im just going to use ramdisk for swap space and stuff. That gets around the trashing your key thing. Probably not an option for an old lappy though! Good luck!
In the last 8 years of being a programmer my eye sight has gone from perfect to shithouse. I actually read this slashdot article title and it gave me hope - once my eyeballs fall out, I can just get new ones!
Though from the first few comments here looks like I shouldnt hold my breath. Better keep waiting for the video camera borg-eyes.
I agree that the earth has a pretty robust system. Once it can kill off all those pesky humans it will take no time to bring itself back to good health, and enjoy the good life for another few million years.
That company "orange" still has this doenst it? Where if you are within a kilometre of your house its a local call or something.
There was that urban legend (or was it?!) that if you activated your account whilst standing in the Sydney CBD then everywhere was a local call. And if you tap the street light buttons with SOS morse code it changes the lights to green instantly...
In the olden days programmin' was about numbers - now its all about strings. You really dont need much maths to write a shopping cart applications, or a "content management system" or something equally as boring.
I guess that that is the whole point of Linux - choice. If you want to install the bare minimum system that fits on a floppy disk you can. If you want to install a massive 6 dvd distro including every linux program ever created, you can.
If your particular interest is having a sparklin' clean untainted kernel - go for it. If your not so worried, go install windows media player etc etc.
There are zillions of distros out there - go find one that does exactly what you want. If it doesnt exist, make your own and put it out for the 3 other people in the world who will see it and go "shit, that's EXACTLY what I need! Thanks!".
Unless of course you go back in time to your childhood, put a pair of headphones on yourself from the past, played yourself Korn until you scared your shelf shitless and convinced yourself to smash your C64 and kick your little eating-peanut-butter-from-the-jar habbit.
Ofcourse, if you could do that you most likely wouldnt be reading this. Best not to mess with the space time continueum I guess.
...Dey took err jerrrbs!

I don't know, I only got up to the bit that said "..a legal resident of the United States.."
Cause Slashdot doesn't exactly have a reputation for posting accurate, nonbiased, intelligent pieces.

Yeah, I immediately thought that also.
Even if it is, it's still a plus for Sun and open source in general - people will begin to realise that if MS begins offering discounts for sticking with them, then the alternatives must be pretty dang good.
To keep the "funny" posts away.

Do you accept the microsoft EULA?
I dont know who you were addressing that initial question to, but I do agree that VST support is (almost) essential to anyone wanting to do pro audio.
There are a couple of really decent attempts at using vst plugins under wine. Check this excellent tutorial from Dave Phillips
I have got all my favourite VSTi and VST plugins going a treat thanks to this.
Now quit whinging.

My doctor says that my 30% eye quality reduction is directly linked to my 300% pr0n viewing increase.
I dont believe that medical mumbo-jumbo.

Clicking on the "You dont have flash - click here for the text version" pops up a TMBG guy telling me "Get flash you hippie"
Way to shame me into it.

Japanese dogs don't go "woof-woof" they go "wan-wan".
And cats go "nya-nya"
Just thought I'd clear that up before you rushed out to buy one for your non-japanese pets.
