Actually I saw a refrigerator that could do this the last time I visited Epcot at Disneyworld. It also kept track of what when in and out and would automatically add things to the shopping list as you ran out.
I am well aware of how the current rules of society work. If I did not then my family would not be able to eat. I am simply stating that we would all be better off if money was not the driving force in society. Nothing more, nothing less.
And I think you would be better served by not judging people based on an idea they have.
Just think about how much better this world would be of money/greed was not the driving force of society. I bet that technology would be ten times more advanced today if people contributed to it solely to make it better and not to make a profit from it.
I've been thinking about this a lot lately since Hurricane Isabel passed through my neck of the woods and we were with out power for three days (and we were lucky compared to most who lost power for over a week). I mean the power grid has changed very little over the past several decades. One way to eliminate most outages seems simple, put the lines underground. But this costs money and the power companies are not willing to fork over the money because it's cheaper/easier to maintain the current obsolete system than it is completely overhaul it.
Now imagine of money/profit were not an issue. All of our power lines would have been placed underground years ago and we'd all be better off.
This applies to just about all aspects of life as we know it. Things don't advance because it's not "cost effective."
I think that's why the open source movement will ultimately triumph because it represents something that I think a lot of people have been feeling recently... that innovation, progress and the common good should be the driving factors of our society, not profit.
I sincerely hope that this attitude begins to permeate other aspects of society.
"there is some promising new technology coming too."
Promising new technology my arse. At my company we recently looked into upgrading the video card on one of our Sun workstations. A 32MB PCI video card was approximately $300!!!
"Frankly, I can almost appreciate the attention to detail that people will go to to protect my ears from bad notes."
I think that you're confusing attention to details and laziness.
I've been a musician for 16 years and I've worked very hard to sound as good as I can. I've spent countless hours practicing and honing my skills so that when I play or sing I can be happy with what comes out. That's attention to detail.
What this does is allow people to be lazy. You don't need to try your best and work hard because a machine will do it for you.
"But the critics also hated "Gigli", "The Real Cancun" and "From Justin to Kelly"."
And rightfully so.
God forbid someone should have an opinion that's different from yours.
will they change it to AskClippy.com???
"Hey it looks like you're searching the internet."
I can just see it now...
"I'd like a Big Mac please."
"Would you like that smoking or non-smoking?"
Sheesh...I said it before and I'll say it again. Just because something can be done doesn't mean that it should be done.
Shouldn't you have layers of protection, instead of an outer layer of protection and a soft underbelly?
Having a layer of protection and a soft underbelly works for shellfish. Oh wait...

and I'm not even an engineer.
:)
The answer is simple...you need bigger pockets.
Actually I believe it's called Socialism, not Communism.

I had a similar thought the other day.

Audible audiobooks are now available through the store.
:)
Good...I'm really fed up with those inaudible audiobooks.
I'm going to patent thought before Microsoft does.
and no one will ever need more that 640K of memory.

Sun needs to get with the program.
to hack someone's pants and make them fall down.
Yes but what about the survival of your liver???
That's just crazy talk.
Everyone knows that a joint in the hand is worth two 3G phones next to your head.
Bradley, who speaks at universities on IBM's behalf, is on a mission...
a mission from God.
Sorry, I couldn't resist.
1. Sue everyone and their brother.
2. ???
3. Profit!!!
I didn't see that one coming.

Technician 2: "NOOOOOO!!!!"
Mmmmm...RAM Sorry I couldn't resist.
e-voting might not be so bad, if done properly.
A government project that is implemented well. Isn't that an oxymoron???
"He said, "Boot off of your new OS CD and format the hard drive.""
Considering the average competency of Dell's tech support I'm not sure I would have trusted that information.
