Back in 1996 or 1997 I bought a book on C++ (for windows) and the CD that accompanied the book had a virus accidently recorded on it. As soon as the CD was installed in the drive then Norton would pop out a message about the virus.
Sort of embarrassing for the author of the book, I imagine.
Never did get a replacement CD. I guess it is sort of like finding a roach in a salad... makes one not want a replacement salad.
I presently use Mozilla Suite for browsing and mail functions.
I tried Thunderbird for mail but while installing it scrambles the folders among wrong accounts and omits some folders as well. According to Bugzilla [Bug 281584] this is a minor problem but since much of my business communication is email based it is a major problem for me so I stay with the Mozilla Suite until the bug is squashed.
I have not yet figured out how to use Mozilla Suite mail with the Firefox browser so they each reference the other. I am now using rev 1.7.11 of Mozilla and figure there must be a way of referencing each other in perhaps the config file or the user.js but have not found it yet.
Back in the early days we were not in a hurry to get an UID... most of us were anonymous and wanted to stay that way... but as the Slashdot system evolved it become apparent that having an UID was the shade of the future.
In the book Forbidden Archaeology just such a being was found during a mining expedition IIRC in a sealed cave devoid of air and when the air hit the form from the outside then it crumbled into dust.
I have the book in storage at the moment so can't review the exact sequence and situation but as I recall the small being seen by several individuals was very similar to what was just described in this article.
Maybe someone with the book can review and post the circumstances in better detail than my memory.
Humanity is multi-dimensional. There are those individuals who can quiet the mind totally and in so doing raise their consciousness to tune into the higher realms. The bible and other religious doctrines talk about this a great deal.
Information coming from the higher realms is based in love and not in fear.
Before you flame this post reflect carefully upon this:
"Can you quiet your mind where not a single thought occurs for 15 minutes? 5 minutes? 1 minute? 10 seconds? Try it and see.
The small still voice that guides from the higher realms is like a soft playing flute compared to the ego which is like a brass marching band. When the mind is active then the flute is inaudible. When the mind is still then the flute can be heard.
Those individuals living close to Mother Earth follow the small still voice that guides them in ways they might not understand while it is occurring but later reveals the reason for the guidance. The tsunami is an example. All humans were given the message, only a few were capable of hearing and following it for only a few had minds quiet enough to comprehend.
I started writing in COMPASS in 1970. Of course, back then we used 80 column cards and keypunch machines to make each card in the deck so time constraints normally dictated avoiding the comments unless they were absolutely required.
After all, some people wrote the comments on the card in ink until it was recognized that the card was valid.
Most programs were flow charted also so that was what one followed for understanding the process.
The operating system for the CDC 3200 used a deck of about 2000 cards which was one box full.
The cpu timing was regulated by a "0" being sent down a delay line with pick points along its length to create the cycle for reading core and then rewriting it.
I do two types of side jobs. One the exorcism of individuals and of properties which includes items, pets, house, buildings, grounds (above and below).
This includes negative thoughtforms, negative energies, negative entities, and about 200 other things.
I charge $20 per person or property. I get emails from people all over the world for this type of work.
As an example, one individual was in a state mental institute for three months and on heavy medication for schizophrenia... I did a clearing on him as he was possessed by hundreds of entities and now his life is normal, living a typical life without meds.
Secondly I work directly with individuals to assist them in working through emotional issues. It is not hynotherapy, rather the individual goes into an altered state of consciousness and they are shown via a movie in their mind.. just as if it is a daydream only the client has total consciousness as it is occurring. The movie lets them see and sense the truth and the issue falls away.
As an example, a person may have a fear of dogs and be shown in the movie that a memory is present of being killed by a pack of wolves in the distant past. Whether this is a past life, a shared embedded memory, or a pseudo lifetime in not known nor is it important to know exactly for the healing takes place regardless.
Typically a session lasts 3 hours and I charge $200 per session.
Many individuals believe that all physical illness with the body are emotionally or mentally created. I have seen some very remarkable physical healing take place once the emotional issue is resolved.
I find that I am doing less and less computer related things and assisting humanity more in these ways.

If I was using IE then it would have spoofed the url as well.
I halfheartedly filled in some obscene words to send, however so much data was asked for in particular ways that I never could validate the screen for sending without carefully crafting a reply ( I was cutting and pasting) so I aborted instead.
Some of those Wang Keyboards had 'hall-effect' switches in them and so they nearly never failed. Or if they did have a problem occasionally it was easy to pop the key apart and clean it if it was binding or switch the internals with a seldom used key.
Which city did your mother work for Wang? I worked for them for 15 years until they went bankrupt in the 80's.
I worked with the Minuteman Missile System for eight years. I was a member of a three man Combat Targeting Team. Our task was aiming the missile and selecting the targets by programming the onboard computer.
A lot of really strange things can happen in the military involving authentication, encrypting and decrypting information and in the whole target selection process itself.
Perhaps one of the weirdest occurences that I was personally aware of was when a missile dropped off of "Strategic Alert" (Green Status). There was a two man team of airmen checking out a communications problem in an adjoining building.
Another team arrived on site and entered into the launch facility and saw that the Nuclear Warhead was missing. Needless to say this scurried people from all over with all kinds of alerts being issued... Losing a nuclear weapon was pretty much frowned upon, needless to say.
It turned out that the warhead had fallen off of the missile to the bottom of the launch tube 100 feet below.
The problem was traced to a fuse being changed on the communication box in the soft support building with a screwdriver rather than a fuse puller.
There was a undetected defect in the onboard computer which combined with the shorting of the communications fuse caused the computer to send the "Fire Retro rockets" signal to the RV (nuclear reentry vehicle)
Another time I was programming the computer with its needed information when some "never seen before" status lights lit. D-1 and D-3 which if I remember correctly was "Launch Commanded" and "Launch in Progress".
Normally an individual has to look up these codes in a reference manual. Being the nerd I was back then, I had memorized all of the codes. So I had only a few seconds to react and I proceeded to pop some circuit breakers that would shutdown parts of the operation in case the status was real.
Our job was not to troubleshoot any further at that point so I never found out whether the computer was intending on really launching or if there were two defective lamp drivers.
Of course there is a policy that two trained people always had to be present (two man concept) to ensure that nothing illegal was attempted.
The members of the targeting team were always armed while couriering and programming the launch codes and other vital information into the missile.
This reminds me of the CDC computer that played classical music utilizing the speaker in the console via program loops, also
The card reader reading cards at the appropriate time
The tape drives rocking tapes and loading/unloading the heads
The disk drives clicking head carriage locking solenoids
The card punch punching a few cards in rhythm
The line printer printing the cadence
Listening to Mozart, Bach etc. was quite an experience in this manner. Unfortunately we did not have the source code.
Of course, back in those days we did however sit closer to the machine code than one typically does presently. So it was possible to list it and see how it did what it did.
The cpu timing cycles (core read & write) was accomplished with a delay line and sending a "0" pulse down the coil with various taps located at the appropriate distance to perform each timing step in order.
Yea, I worked with a guy like that years ago (fortunately I never worked for him). He would always rate his techs and engineers way low during performance reviews and then give merit raises accordingly.
It was said that if he performed a performance appraisal on "Lake Superior" that it would then be "Lake Fully Satisfactory".
This reminds me of the problem with two vendors who were working on the Minuteman I Missle System back in the 60's. One company used positive logic (0 = 0V, 1 = 5V) and the other company used negative logic (0 = 0V, 1 = -5V)
So when it came time to connect the logic together the problem was discovered so a 6 foot cabinet called the "Coupler Rack" was built and installed to interface these two dissimilar logic/voltages.
This rack was a good place to monitor the signals though since it interfaced the onboard cpu & guidance system with the supporting equipment.
God forbid that you ever have a problem with a data line (higher quality line in those times) for the tech at AT&T would simply say that it was your equipment causing the problem and that their line check verified it. It was a monumental lesson in frustration.
I ran a 10 state wide call center and the data processing branch of our company and dealing with AT&T was not easy even though we had nearly 100 lines with them. The customer service representives though at AT&T were outstanding, however they also had frustration in dealing with the repair group.
When MCI lines arrived we switched and in doing so saved half of the expense and most of the problems encountered and all of the headaches.
Competition lowered the price, improved quality, and made the company (especially the techs) more responsive.
Breaking up AT&T was the best thing that ever happened to improve the telephone systems overall.
"He said that growing up poor in the USSR, he still assumed things must be worse in the USA, and he imagined a "typical" American boy his age, living on the edge of starvation under an oppressive regime."
Being raised fairly poor on a midwestern farm, my father would tell my siblings and me as we passed fancy houses as we drove along the road that "Those people aren't really happy who live there"
The impression that painted mentally created a lot of internal confusion for years about whether it was right to be in a big nice house and risk unhappiness.
I laugh now, but in my late teens and early 20's I found myself walking more in my fathers shoes with his beliefs than my own shoes and my beliefs.
So getting off the farm and seeing the world opened up a whole new vista for me, and perhaps one day many MS users having nothing to lose will also take that risk and see the new vistas that are awaiting them.
And I also found that those people living in the fancy houses on the hill are happy much of the time.
There was contaminated oil from manufacturing "agent orange" (used in Vietnam for defoliaging the trees) that was sold cheaply and so a man named Bliss bought some and used it to oil down the streets of Times Beach. He was not aware that the oil was contaminated... nor were many of those that sold it to him.
Google will have more on the details which are hazy in my mind after 20 years. Search for "dioxin" and "Times Beach" and you will probably have plenty to read.
Back in the early 80's a small town - Times Beach, Missouri was found to have dioxin sprayed on the dirt streets and caused the government to buy out the whole town and relocate everybody.
It is eery to drive down I-44 just outside of St. Louis and see this town that is totally deserted. just sitting there...
I've moved from the area since so have not seen it in a few years so don't know what it looks like today, but it was said that the streets contained 2,000,000 times the amount of dioxin considered to be a dangerous level.
People living there would rake up dead birds and animals died at an alarming rate. over 50 horses died at a single stable from the spraying.
Now it is just a ghost town frozen in time from the early 80's.
A massive cleanup was to be put in place collecting the dirt, processing it and later putting back the cleaned dirt... but it may be a never ending project.
Any locals from St. Louis area care to elaborate further and update what is going on and if the town is still there?

PGP does this. (information is from the PGP Help File)
Start PGPmail.
Click the Wipe Free Space button in the PGPmail window. The PGP Free Space Wiper Welcome screen appears.
The PGP Free Space Wiper prompts you to select the volume you want to wipe and the number of passes you want to perform.
In the Volume box, select the disk or volume that you want PGP to wipe. Then, select the number of passes that you want PGP to perform.
As many as 28 passes can be made to ensure no spurious magnetic domains exist.
