Steam works the same in Windows 8 as in Windows 7 from what I've seen thus far. There is no way most gamers would buy a game in the Microsoft app store if the same game was available on Steam. Seems like Valve is more concerned about the competition from the Microsoft App Store than about how open Windows 8 as an O/S is.

I'm not sure why this keeps coming up in reviews/previews that Metro is new, so its scary and once people get over that its not too bad. I've played around several RCs and the RTM version and Metro isn't scary because its new, its scary because its is a tablet UI copy/pasted onto a keyboard and mouse driven platform. Windows 8 is half baked and Metro is not properly integrated into a Windows environment. Its not scary, its a PITA to use.

"Google has also been working with Samsung to launch a 10-inch tablet, confirming leaks which suggested Google had teamed up with the Korean manufacturer for another device. Our source tells us that internally the tablet goes under the name “Codename Manta”, runs Google’s new Android 4.2 operating system (previously referred to as Key Lime Pie, but is set to retain the Jelly Bean branding), and will offer a 2560×1600 pixel (16:10) resolution, which we believe will offer around 300 pixels per inch (PPI) compared to the new iPad’s 264 PPI."

Why wouldn't game developers sell games on Steam rather than creating their own obnoxious systems?

Valve takes about 30% of a cut of game sale. Now factor in DLC, in which they take their cut again and developers HAVE to use Steam for DLC when a game is sold on Steam. EA wanted to sell DLC directly to customers via an in-game store and Valve said no no no, we want a piece of that pie too. It gets pretty expensive for a company like EA who has alot of franchises and DLC when using Steam, hence they spent some money fixing up EA Downloader and turned it into Origin.

Consumers like good, well thought out changes but get turned off changes that are poorly implemented or unnecessary. Metro on PC with no touch screen feels like they copy/pasted some tablet UI code into Windows and called it a day. The work required to properly integrate Metro with a PC UI hasn't been done and most consumers will be turned off by that, not the fact that its a change.
