  1. Sounds Familiar on Captain America vs. The Patriot Act? · · Score: 0, Offtopic

Rising Stars? I swear I've read that plotline before...

  2. Grammar Nazi Strikes Again! on The Wasp Micro Air Vehicle · · Score: 0, Offtopic

  3. Re:Only makes sense on VoIP Wiretapping · · Score: 4, Insightful

Seems that the real savvy shady types would run their own VOIP in lieu of commercial services - unless you could encrypt between the end users, somewhat difficult given a commercial POTS/VoIP bridge. Anyone who knows what they're talking about want to sound off on this?

  4. Re:The Passion of the Converted. on YellowDog Linux 4.0 Ships · · Score: 3, Interesting

Gentoo is nice on the PPC - as almost everything is compiled from source anyway, it means that the lack of PPC binaries almost becomes moot. Also, it's a lot faster to incorporate bleeding-edge hardware support. And the forums are nice. I use it, if you couldn't tell.

  5. Legal Circumvention on Copy-protected CD Tops U.S. Charts · · Score: 1

If you want the songs on your computer, download them from iTunes (or other legal service of choice), use hymn (or semi-legal equivalent of choice), and then listen or convert as you please. Or, use Bittorrent. Or DC. Or Shareaza. Or ____. Amazing how inventive the discerning music consumer/pirate can be. :P

  8. Re:Ideas on Things You Can Do With A Giant Fresnel Lens · · Score: 1

Solar Panels typically have a lot of surface area not devoted to photovoltaic cells - some type of lensing could be used to focus the light that would normally hit the unused portions onto the reactive areas. Or, if a cell is more efficient with more light coming in, then that's another possible use right there.

  9. Re:PHP? on Apache HTTP Server 1.3.31 Released · · Score: 1

In terms of instability and such, I'd be far more worried about MySQL 4.1 than Apache 2 - especially as the compatibility issues haven't been completely nailed out (Connector/J, etc)

  10. Pruning for the public good? on Nearly Half of U.S. 'Net Users Post Content · · Score: 4, Interesting

I'm really going to hope you're kidding. Really. There are far more things to blame 'moral degeneration' on that Japanese freaking cartoons - hell, if anything, they (may) have contributed to the tech boom - which doesn't deem like a comedown to me.
Besides - I'm not sure how crushing other people with anvils, burning them, blowing them up, running them over is any better than what the Japasese 'toons are showing. (With a few non-televised exceptions, of course...)

  14. Re:weird, Just got panther installed, launched saf on Panther Released into the Wild · · Score: 1

There are a couple solutions to this problem:
    1. Tweak OSX - there are tons of apps to make OSX work the way you want to - or you can just use your favorite *NIX apps via the *new and improved* X11 support in Panther. 2. Install Linux on the mac. YDL is great if you like Red Hat, and supports lots of late-model hardware. Gentoo has a well-maintained PPC distro, if you like compiling things.

  19. Revolution 7.1 on Apple Pulls 10.2.8 Update · · Score: 5, Informative

DO NOT INSTALL IF YOU HAVE A REVOLUTION 7.1 SOUND CARD INSTALLED! The update disables the driver, because the .kext driver specifies a Darwin version below that of OS 10.2.8 I wonder what they'll call the 10.2.8 update when they re-release it? 10.2.8.1? This brings them awfully close to 10.3, and they usually roll some fixes in to the old OS when they release a new one.

  20. Re:not yet on Mac OS X 10.2.8 Available · · Score: 1

If you want a temporary fix for the caching problem, enable the debug menu (check macosxhints.com for how) and tweak the cache - I just flat-out disabled mine, since I'm on DSL.

  21. Re:How long? on Microsoft Offers A DRM Patch · · Score: 2, Insightful

Eventually the patch will be 'automatically' installed - since M$ controls both ends of the update process (server & client) there's really no telling when the whim will strike and the patch is installed by default, or bundled with a service pack or the like. But, as my father is so @#$%-ing fond of saying, "It all works so well together." Bah.

  22. Pert Peeve on VeriSign Sued Over SiteFinder Service · · Score: 5, Interesting

Cybersquatting, though one of the great minor evils of the web, is damned hard to stop. I can't think of any way to regulate/legislate it without messing up the domain registration and transfer process for everyone else - though it would be nice to be able to buy domains BACK from these companies - I would imagine quie a few choice domains are in their hands. Nice to see a lawsuit taking on Verisign over this - even if it is a cybersquatter. I wonder if there's an intelligent way to reserve domain names for individuals and organizations which already have use for the name - maybe a form of 'prior branding' only better implemented...

Mars is a lot less likely to smack into us than some random asterioid... I think. Of course - Mars gets smacked around by asteroids all the time; that happens when you stick a planet in an asteroid belt. That's a tough call to make for a big corporation - the only way for them to test out that kind of sales model is to throw a major product at it - and if it fails, then they can lose millions (depends on the product) In the short term, techniques like activation keys, ET-phone-home, etc. are far more in line with their existing business model. On the other hand - If , say Macromedia and Adobe slashed prices to one tenth, the I know I'd buy more of their products!
