  1. Re:Gator! on First Ten Programs on New Install? · · Score: 2, Funny

Honestly, here is the two-step program that worked for me:

    1) Step away from the computer
    2) Leave the house

I'm dead serious here. I started getting out just over a month ago, and now I have been on dates with two different girls in that time. The two years previous that I spent on the net, I didn't go out on a single date. Oh, and I'm getting to see more of the city, working out more, eating healthier, and generally just living a better life.

But, of course, let's not be silly here. Do it in moderation. As you can tell, I haven't given up the net *completely* ;)

You mean, something more definitive, like google searching "global dimming", perhaps? Or compared to the plethora of links you've so meticiously gathered backing up any contrary claims?

The article mentions two experiments that independently verify global dimming is occuring -- one of which described in detail enough that one could do it at home. The questions it raises are about *why* the dimming is occuring, not *if* the dimming is occuring. That's a lot farther than any discussion about global *warming* gets, because we don't have any prove that global warming is even happening!

There is a one-to-one provable correlation there. There is *no* provable one-to-one correlation between stealing data/service and stealing money. Arguably, enough evidence points that file-sharing has indirect economical benefits, such as increasing market penetration/share and free advertising (including word of mouth).

As well, by using my credit card with my permission, you are committing fraud because you are alleging to be me in the action of using my credit card. If I listen to MP3s ripped from my friends' CDs or downloaded from the 'net, I am not committing fraud.

Yeah, that's true, but to a degree. I mean, as long as they don't have some A or B list female celebrity, it shouldn't be *too* hard.

Think of the stuff that could have been ruined before, like the secret of Qui-Gon Jinn's death being spoiled by the pre-released soundtrack with the "Funeral of Qui-Gon" track. Or ruining Gandalf's return with the previews of "The Two Towers". Yeah, both secrets were ruined, but only for some people (I think, could be wrong).

I think, as long as they don't have the actress parade about on fifty talk shows promoting the movie, then it should be okay. And, really, you only need the actress for the end of the movie, so you could shoot the majority of the film with a stunt double.

  8. My thoughts on John Woo & Metroid the Movie? · · Score: 1

This is how I think the movie *should* go:

    Introduction/Teaser:

On a dusty, red planet, some Chozo (big scrawny bird-like aliens) find a gender-non-detriment human child on their planet. Montage of scenes of GND child growing up on them, learning their ways and technology. You could pretty much shot this whole thing just like any cheesy chop-sockey film where child/teen/adult learns martial arts from monks in hidden monastery. In this chunk of the movie, it stays true to the Metroid story, to a standard chop-sockey movie, *and* keeps the gender of Samus a mystery.

    CUT to:

Years later, praying-mantis-like Space pirates (which are totally sweet Real Ultimate Power and kick ninja ass!) find Zebes and the Metroids, and start their nefarious plots. Insert typical amounts of bad guys Being Bad, killing people, and cool action scenes. End scenes with shot of Mother Brain. This meets the chop-sockey requirements of introducing the bad guys, stays true to the Metroid story, and Samus's gender is *still* a mystery.

    CUT TO:

A full-suited Samus in the Samus-mobile, cruising the galaxy, getting the distress call to head to Zebes. If Lucas can hide Leia's voice in the Ubese armour in RotJ, Woo can damn well do the same here. Maybe have Samus kick some ass as she bounty hunts as a taste/teaser before she gets the call.

    MEANWHILE, BACK ON ZEBES:

Space pirates start fooling around with top secret weapons, like Kraid and the Ice Beam...

Then, have Samus on Zebes, kicking ass, taking names, etc. Instead of her just shooting up creatures, set it up as the creatures attacking her in one of those suspenseful "stalking hidden danger" type things, and then, after that, she knows the creature-type is dangerous and then she can kill it with a clear conscience.

Of course, she kills Kraid and Ripley, big action sequences, she finds the "weapon upgrades", maybe a bit of the morph ball, bombs, missiles, charge shots. Probably not the screw attack. Enter the Metroids, Space Pirates, mimes, etc, etc.

Big finale: attack of the Mother Brain. Samus wins, barely (naturally), flees the self-destruct, takes the helm off, end of movie.

    From Merriam Webster's Online Dictionary:

    Main Entry: common sense
    Function: noun
1 : the unreflective opinions of ordinary people
2 : sound and prudent but often unsophisticated judgment

You see, the word "common" doesn't refer to the wisdom being "commonly" available, it refers to the wisdom of "common" people. The reason you probably think so highly of "commonsense" is that you are from "common" people, in which case, having "commonsense" is something to aspire to.

How about this a counter thought:

The reason time passes faster while you increase in age is because equal periods of time are different sizes relative to the amount of time lived.

For example, 1 year when you are 10 years old is 10% of your life span. From 10 to 11 years of age, you have increased your lifespan by 10%. When you are 40 years, one year is only 2.5% of your lifespan. As the time progresses, each additional year is smaller in comparison. While each year, objectively, is exactly one year in length, relative to the amount of time lived by a person, each year gives diminishing returns in terms of additional percentage of time lived.

The easiest way to test this would be to take a group of people, and ask them the following question:

    1) Would you consider the amount of "life lived" (or however) from the years of 20-22 and 30-33 to be equivalent?
    2) Would you consider the amount of "life lived" from the years of 40-44 to be equilavent to the years of 30-33?
    3) 10-11 to 20-22?
