Rand was born in Russia and saw the country collapse around her as the reds took over. Atlas Shrugged is essentially what she had seen there, extended to the whole world.
More like "Oh no, he can cause the collapse of pretty much any building, commands an army of underground monsters, and has technological knowledge centuries ahead of ours."
Halfway through the novel, the protagonist meets a hobo who used to be a worker at the Twentieth Century Motor Company, whose bankruptcy years before was a key event in the novel for several reasons. He tells what had actually happened there:
After the founder's death, the heirs decided to manage the company under the motto: "From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs." The consequence was obvious: all workers pretty much turned into beggars, inventing more needs, while anyone who demonstrated competence was required to work harder. While the press praised the "enlightened" management, productivity collapsed, quality went to shit, and clients ran away.
There's more. It is arranged so the d-pad has the "sweet spot", not the left analog stick. This made sense when most games were 2D and used mainly the d-pad, but now it's the other way around. Also, the analogs' placement makes it so using them strains the thumbs.
Also, those buttons with symbols instead of letters... that's just idiotic.
This reminds me of how the DualShock won some supposedly important award, even though it's among the worst gamepads ever, and its design issues are glaring for anyone with half a brain.
Read this interview. Courtney Solomon didn't want to direct that D&D movie, just produce it. He brought James Cameron, Francis Ford Coppola, Renny Harlin - and the idiot boss at TSR rejected them all. Eventually, Wizards of the Coast bought TSR, and the next idiot in charge promptly sued Solomon. They settle, but part of the settlement is that the movie has to begin production real quick - ruining their shot at finding investors for a bigger budget - and use the same script TSR had approved years before - even though they had a much better one ready.
To sum it up, the idiots who owned the D&D brand forced the movie to fail.
I recall reading that there was a migration path from Symbian to MeeGo, so when they moved to Windows Phone, all app developers who were counting on it were enraged and moved to Android.
I have a Galaxy Note II, and I must agree. The hardware is solid (although the design is rather dull), but this thing would be nearly unusable if I couldn't install a different launcher. TouchWiz is a huge step backwards if you're used to "stock" Android.
Now the modern form over function UX crowd with their hipster indecipherable logos (3 dots for action, 3 lines for menu?) may be heading the wrong direction
To be fair... the largest smartphones are still tiny compared to the screen of any desktop computer. Also, your input is far less precise than keyboard and mouse. You have to make some sacrifices to design an interface suitable for that hardware.
But then came Windows 8, trying to put a mobile interface on the desktop. Now that was just idiotic.
Some companies spend fortunes in R&D, create a bunch of cool stuff, and... never turn any of it into actual products, usually due to stupid management. Maybe that's the case here?
As a Brazilian, let me tell you something. It's not a matter of racism, but education. It's a fact that we have a lot of poverty, and our public education system is far from great. But then, in the late 90s, the economy started to improve, and computers became more affordable. So even poorer, semiliterate people went online. Now imagine a nation-wide "eternal September" on steroids. And all of it flocked to Orkut. Can you blame the rest of the world for not wanting to touch that mess?
Now, it was also Google's fault, as I recall Orkut was notorious for its security problems. But I liked its design, it was all about the communities. Orkut was more like a collection of forums than a social network. But near the end, they changed that too, and I thought: I don't care about these people, I care about these topics, these communities. Why did they make it more complicated to get to the part I want to see?
Then order from abroad, say, some chinese store like Gearbest or Deal Extreme. They will have only unlocked phones, although you have to check if they will work in US (as different countries use different frequencies). I think Android is usable enough... although Samsungs need at least a different launcher.
The way forward was clear when the iPhone and then Android came about - either improve Symbian or move to Android.
I must disagree. The way forward was to move to their own new system, Linux-based MeeGo. They actually released one phone with it, the N9. Despite extremely positive reviews, the Microsoft-planted CEO fucked it sideways. If it wasn't for that subhuman scumbag, Nokia would probably still be a major smartphone maker now, with MeeGo ahead of iOS.
Very modern and beautiful OS. Microsoft is reinventing personal computer. Again. Meanwhile, OS X is continuing its march to unify with iOS. And Linux is acting like a time capsule to be shown in museums how it was in the mid 2000s. [/sarcasm]
App means application. Maya and Angry Birds are equally apps.

and a black Thing would probably be racist, or something?
He's already the token Jew.

You must be new around here. Free as in the four freedoms.
Out of interesting, what do you need more storage for?
A great use for a smartphone is a portable gaming / emulation device. For that, you need two things: a fuckton of storage, and a bluetooth gamepad.

Why would anyone want to switch over to Microsoft's app based Windows 10?
App means application software. AutoCAD and Angry Birds are equally apps.
