It's probably just a matter of having used the PS controller for 10 years, but I don't see myself preferring the XBox controller any time soon.

The disc spinup is so damned loud. Most of my gameplaying takes place after the kids are put to bed so having my volume up to 90dB isn't really an option.

I hate replying to my own post, but I completely forgot that the 20gig ps3 doesn't come with wifi. So after a gold subscription you come out to about $50 ahead with the XBox. After two years your even, and after three you're in the hole $50. So whatever. I'd suggest just figuring out which games you want and pick the system that way.

Owning both I feel some of your points are a bit mistaken.

    1. This is highly subjective. I prefer the ps3 controller (though I do miss rumble).
    2. No question about it. XBox live is superior to the free PS3 offering. Now had MS offered a free, feature-stripped service like the Sony has, I would have taken that instead of paying $50.
    3. Eh... the majority of console owners will never do anything but play games, so this isn't really a selling point to most people.
    4. The 20 gig PS3 is the console which is comparable to the 360 premium, not the 60 gig. The only advantage the XBox has there is the inclusion of the component cables. If you're willing to go online, you can get HDMI for $10. So depending on your network setup, this is a wash. Me? I required wifi in my console so I would have made out the same had I purchased the 20 gig (I got the 60).
    5. Smaller yes, but I think the PS3 looks nicer. Plus nothing is more annoying that a 360 with a disc in the drive. It's grating at 10 feet.

Now if I had to choose just one console? The 360. Without a doubt. But that's only NOW. In a year when Sony has built up a decent library of games like the 360 has, things may be different.

And I'm completely ignoring the Wii since that's competing on a different level than these two (planning on picking one up next month).

Plus I seriously doubt your taste in games and ability to appreciate games outside your prefered genres, even if you don't personally enjoy them.

So much for an intelligent discussion, but whatever..

    Nethack, Tetris, any given MUD

Read some children's impressions of the original Legend of Zelda

Wii Sports is *the* game of last year.
OK. How much did it cost? Wii Sports had no graphics because it had no budget. The gameplay wasn't great. What's innovative about baseball or tennis? The controller sold the game. Not the other way around.

    Graphics are icing
Which is exactly my point. If you're making a wonderfully designed and fun game, crap graphics can only hurt it. Improving the graphics doesn't magically make the game less fun to play. And making it look like shit doesn't make it more fun.

I don't know why you think I have something against Nintendo. I don't. I'm planning on pickup up a Wii as soon as I can find one. I understand why Nintendo didn't bump the graphics up on the console. It was to get the new features in at a price that was acceptable to them and to the public. Nintendo never said that in order to improve the gameplay, we need to degrade graphics. You're looking for a dichotomy that doesn't exist.

It's still a myth. If there's very few good designers for the hundreds or thousands of programmers who can make things pretty, the designers have the tools to make their wonderfully designed games pretty.

I can't think of one game with great gameplay that didn't also have great graphics (I'm sure there are some, I just can't think of any). I can think of a ton of games that looked great but had crap gameplay. But that just means that great designers are in short supply, not that gameplay and graphics are mutually exclusive.

Nintendo didn't need to keep the graphics of the Wii conservative to make the games fun. They would have been just as fun with improved graphics. They needed to do it to implement the new features and keep the system at a price point that would be acceptable.

There's tons of devices like it everywhere. The difference is that Apple is putting their stamp on it with ease of use and getting those who don't normally buy fancy phones to get into it like they did with the iPod. They're good at evolving existing technologies and making them VERY user friendly. Not so much for innovation. (for consumer electronics. I know nothing about their computers).

Basically, you have to be really careful about how you position the sensor bar in relation to yourself and the TV. I'm not sure there is much science behind it, but you have to make sure to get the sensor bar centered horizontally and at the front of the TV, but it also needs to be perpendicular to the way that you are aiming the controller. If it's a little angled, then things get a little messed up. The other big thing is that if you have other sources of IR than the sensor bar (like the sun, or anything that is going to reflect the IR from the sensor bar) then you need mess with the sensitivity of the wiimote and possibly cover things up (a lot of people on the gamespot forums recommend covering up any theoretical glass coffee tables that are between you and the system).
