I've been a bit slow with the FreeBSD version after losing my machine with a default v5.4 build, and rebuilding my heavily tweaked system to v6.0 (and realising alot of people still use v5) - but I've finally got qemu working beautifully,
and have 'default' builds of 5.4 and 6.0 (others may be added) so I can do proper testing.
A new and uptodate FreeBSD beta should be released soon for anyone who is interested -- see my homepage
STOP CALLING IT 'AJAX' - of all people, I'd expect the slashdotters to get it right -- it's just a javascript function - a useful javascript function, but that's it.
"AJAX" is some stupid marketing blurb hyped name.
I'm sure we could come up with other acronyms for other javascript/html/dom functions if we wanted to...
> I must admit 9 out of 10 times I regretted having looked up the lyrics, it kinda ruins my feeling once I understand every single word and can sing-a-long.
You're lucky you get accurate informaton.. The only time I've needed to look up a lyric it's for a part of a track that is difficult to understand, and invariably you get about 5 different version on-line.
Originally (back in the days of the ftp lyric server), things seems to be accurately transcribed. These days, most lyrics seem to be have been submitted by people listening to the track, and often getting it wrong...
I wouldn't be surprised if "kiss this guy" is listed in some places as a legitimate lyric...
> CD out to Line in is not defeating DRM, it is making an analog recording instead a digital copy.
Ah, but this is so overhyped as a bad thing.
Why is 'keeping it digital' so important, when 99% of people then mangle those digital bits with a poorly ripped 128Kbs (or less!) mp3 ?
Unless you are going to leave it uncompressed, or use something like FLAC, it's a moot point.
A cd out to line-in will generally produce a very good copy - generally much better than the DRM version that the companies supply as an alternative.
I feel generally, with low quality mp3 players, and badly ripped tracks, people these days are generally much more accepting of low quality than they were 'in my day'.
In my day, people moaned about CD digital not being accurate enough. If I copied a CD onto an analogue cassette, with semi-reasonable equipment, the quality would be better than most mp3's etc. around these days.
And, a CD -> Line-in doesn't even have to suffer from the analogue-tape part!
What it comes down to, is it doesn't matter WHAT DRM is put on a file.. As long as the file is playable through your loudspeakers, and sounds ok, then a first generation digital->analogue->digital copy will be fine.
Maybe the article was written with humour and flame-bait, and maybe it was written in a way to maximise slashdot potential, but I don't think The Register would make up something like this, being so subtle.
For one thing, I'm sure Sony would sue their arses.
Anyway, it took 5 seconds to check the EFF website, and it is indeed real:
I suppose to act in their own self-interest, governments should never give relief to other countries, should never help out when a disaster strikes in another country etc. ?
We shouldn't stop genocide in Bosnia ?
As I sorta said, most of these things aren't being done properly, now, but the IDEA I still think is sound.
Don't try to get all countries to be insular. Mistrust, paranoia, will just bring many more "cold wars", and with the improvements of technology since the last cold war, the world wouldn't be a very nice place to be in.
> Also I'd say that because of the stance taken, science was forced to develop > the method that utilized skin cells (slashdot covered that). Something that > wouldn't have happen in the "let's take the easy way out" science advocated > by atheists.
Right... Because only God fearing men and women can possibly have any morals, right ? I think you'll find I, and many others, are far more moral, fair, and all round 'nicer' than many regular church goers
Most of the time I run at 1600 x 1200 but I do sometimes go higher (never lower), -- 1920 x 1440 or even 2048 x 1536.
I'd probably stick with 1920 x 1440 but the refresh rate is 75Hz which gets to me after a while! Basically, whilst I do run with the default size fonts, I'd prefer to run with as high a resolution as I can, and then make the fonts bigger if necessary... To me the running resolution is a technical thing not a visual preference... It just seems better to run at the max, and adjust everything else to fit! Smoother look then, and.. err.. just seems right:-)
Also, I don't alway run with the browser window maxed out.
Still, whilst I don't expect them to cater for weirdos like me! it is a more general principal -- I know lots of people on 1024x768 and some still on 800x600 and it looks like this site has been written for an 800 pixel width window.
They could at least space stuff out a bit better for us.
But, screen resolution aside, I do think too much space has been set aside for 'news' etc. -- As I said in my original post, I think that it complicates the front page for newbies, and regulars who want to see the news will know what sub page to look at.. Maybe have some sort of thing other than just a link, maybe with just the latest info, or the date... just not half the page!
Ok, now my curiosity.. What size is your monitor ? I'm guessing 17inch if you think I'd have a 24 inch!
Ok, it needed some improvements, and also a lot may be because I'm used to it, but overall, I preferred the old site.
For a start, it made full use of my browsers screen size (the new site only uses a quarter of my browsers window.. damn 'fixed sized' web sites)
It also (and maybe as a consequence) squashes too much into a small space.
The news/upcoming events/in the media/security advisories sections now have too much prominence. Sure, this may be handy for 'regulars', but regulars know where to look anyway.
Surely, the purpose is to grab -- and keep -- new visitors to FreeBSD. As such, this large section merely confuses.
But, ultimately, I resent this page being squashed into a quarter of my window!!
> Perhaps I'm missing some sort of in-joke, but why would you want to run Flash under Wine when there is a native Linux version?
Why were you modded informative ? Not only do win32 apps running under Wine need to access the win32 flash, but Wine runs on many systems that aren't Linux.
I NEED A MEDIC!

The Creative Jukebox looks much better than the plain old Ipod "Fridge"
A nice idea for adding value to the physical CD purchase.
Though, it doesn't even have to go this far.
A decent booklet, maybe, with some band photos, lyrics etc. would go a long way to add value, at no major cost

Well, that's where we disagree.

You are American I assume ?
Any problems in the UN should be sorted out - however drastic that sorting out means.
I'm making no comment on the current state of the UN, but as a concept, it is a GOOD idea (to the rest of the world anyway)
Or, indeed the logo for Maxim magazine if you take off the tail.
Haven't you ever seen those adverts, for some product, which is the "best ever".
:-)
Nothing can possibly beat it ?
Then after a few months you see the advert for the "new improved" version ?
It's like that.
FreeBSD has always been stable, but is now getting stabler and stabler !
Remove the final '/' of each one...
Maybe he was doing a slash-dot test ?
It's a SPACE-HOPPER !

Modded 'Funny ??'
Maybe once, but this 'joke' died a death so long ago, Netcraft wasn't around to confirm it.

Fair point I guess :-)
