I know little to nothing about sound cards, but I just got a new system that has 5.1 channel (and a digital out) right onboard.

+ 50$ for some speakers and I am all set - I know it's not 6.1 but is there a realy big difference? Why should I shell out $$ for a sound card when out-of-the-box I get theater quality sound.

To write/compile and run any of the .NET languages you really do not need VS.net. Visual studio is nothing more then a nice (_REALY_NICE_) development environment and debugger. You can write your C#/VB.net/ASP.net code in notepad and compile with the command line. The compilers and documentation is part of the SDK that you can download from MS at no charge ;) as well as distribute your compiled code w/o any royalties (I think).... Technically even after a format (or several) the data can be still restored... Even if you overwrite it with random bits - reason being that the way hard drives work. Data is stored as bits encoded by small clumps of magnetically charged partials. These partials are arranged by polarity. But they are never really 1 or 0, think about them as more .7877 and .2314, if I write to the same 2 bits again with the same data the # will approach 1/0 respectably. There are hardware units that based on the actual charge can uncover layers of data. Full information is here.
