Sorry, but the B2 was operational in 1993 while the F117 was operational in 1983 (and kept secret until late 1988).
Perhaps you are thinking of the B-1 Lancer, which was NEVER a stealth aircraft. The F117 was the first real operational "stealth" aircraft.
First, fighters generally attract the better pilots than bombers, and since the F117 was a first strike or tactical strike craft, good pilots were of utmost importance...
Second, naming it as a fighter helped with the secrecy surrounding its true capabilities and use, especially in Cold War times...
"The wars of the future will not be fought on the battlefield or at sea.
They will be fought in space, or possibly on top of a very tall
mountain. In either case, most of the actual fighting will be done by
small robots. And as you go forth today remember always your duty is
clear: To build and maintain those robots. Thank you."
Now if we could just get mandatory picture IDs for voting, we'd eliminate nearly all of the election rigging.
Indiana state law requires state issued photo ID's for elections. It goes very smooth. You present your driver's license or photo ID card, and they check you in, and you vote.
They keep the BMV open extra hours the Monday before the election to accommodate anyone who needs an ID, and simple ID cards are issued free of charge.
I have used most of the Simcities as a sort of transportation simulator. I always liked to see how my road designs contained traffic. Simcity 2K was just terrible with roads. Simcity 3k was better, but had just lousy highways. Simcity 4 has more realistic roads/highways but still lacked the customization that I wanted. I want to build custom on-ramps. I want to create the lousy intersections that people deal with in real life.
Alas....it seems they are taking this Simcity to a Sims level. I never did like the Sims; well, I did like building houses. Thats about it.
As usual, Slashdot tends to have individuals that think they know everything posting a lot of crap. Since there seems to be some ignorance with respect to agribusiness, I thought, being a 7th Generation farmboy in Indiana, I might weigh in.
--Addressing the subsidy issue. Yes, our farm receives them, on occasion. Generally speaking they are set up if prices do not reach a set point for a season. Many say they should be eliminated, and in principle I agree with them. However, there are some costs that are unique to farmers, that, well, hurt. One is property tax. Farmers generally do not benefit from abatements like corporations do, and therefore bear the full brunt of tax. In areas with increasing housing pressure, that drives up land values, which can really sting with respect to taxes as a viable single family farm generally isn't less than 350Acres (here in IN due to good soil) X 3-4K per acre = ~$1-1.5Millon. Farmers also cannot control their prices. Whereas a factory can sell lots of widgets for less money a piece, or a few widgets for more $, farmers must take what they can get on the market. Farmers also cannot fully control their production. Agriculture is dependent on weather conditions completely, and poor weather for a year can put a small farm out of business. Subsidies are supposed to help small farmers in those bad years, but are greatly abused by commercial "gipsie farmers." It kind of gives a bad rap to the whole system.
--Bio-fuels.... Yes, we farmers know that rapeseed and sugarcane and all these other exotic crops are better for ethanol than corn. But, not many are willing to take the gamble to grow these exotic crops and not have a market for them. Most farmers around here take their grain to an elevator less than 50miles from their fields. Its generally not feasible economically to go farther than that. Do I know of any elevators in that range that take anything exotic; no. These crops are just too risky for a business that already has so many factors that we cannot control. I mean, think. What if rapeseed does not grow well in certain soils in Indiana? What available chemicals are there to control weeds in these crops? What equipment must I purchase? (for small seeds, probably new drill attachments, and special harvesting equipment, also very expensive). We all know that corn grows well in Indiana. We all know that there are markets, cheap chemicals for weed control, and hey, I already have all the equipment to plant and harvest corn. Hmm, I think I'll stick with corn.
With respect to corn ethanol plants, they have the potential to be very efficient. Imagine this: Ethanol plant takes corn from nearby farmers and produces ethanol and distillers grain. Attached to the ethanol plant is a large confined beef cattle feeding operation which consumes the distillers grains. The cattle operation produces beef and manure. The manure is then placed in a digester, which produces methane and residuals (inorganics, etc.)The methane is used to augment the fuel to power the ethanol plant, and the residuals are used in fertilizer production for the corn fields. Nice and efficient. Too bad this has yet to be implemented.
As for biodiesel (virgin biodiesel that is), its made from soybeans, a crop planted on years opposite corn. It has its issues, such as gelling issues in higher concentrations when temps are low, but from a farmer stand point, we fully support it.
I am curious if there is any data with respect to water vapor levels in the atmosphere over time. Water vapor, having a strong IR absorbance, is the other major greenhouse gas naturally occurring which is produced naturally (transpiration, evaporation) and artificially (industrial cooling towers, combustion, etc.)
Despite anyone's particular leanings as to cause (anthropogenic, cyclic, or otherwise) I wonder if increased water vapor levels are contributing.
It may also be noted that as temperature rises, water vapor levels would increase, perhaps enhancing any warming trend.
For those unenlightened individuals wondering about the "buttsexwithfishsquirrels" tag, you may want to refer to the South Park episode dealing with evolution. You can watch the clip right here.
I find it quite curious that many liberals out there (Slashdot drips of them) complain about the potential (and real) privacy abuses of the Bush Administration (which is not a bad thing; privacy protection is a good thing), but at the same time complain about the 2nd Amendment and the general pro-gun attitudes of Republicans.
It would make sense that privacy advocates should also be advocates of the 2nd Amendment (interpreted as allowing for private gun ownership and right-to-carry) as an armed public is the only way to have any level of resistance if a government becomes truly oppressive. I know that some of you will say that marching and demonstrating is one way that does not require an armed resistance. Yea, well, unarmed crowds really don't do so well against a M16 equipped military controlled by the government (need examples? see China, 1989).
The parent is right. We have seen what happens when politics runs a war. Can anyone remember Vietnam? A war that had literally a quagmire of rules given to it by politicians. The US had overwhelming military power over the Communists. Why did we lose? Because we did not have clear goals. We took Hill#674 one day, and then retreated the next. We showed our enemies that we had a weakness. And that weakness was politicians. The military was not allowed to fight with how the American military is designed: with overwhelming force.
Iraq has had 2 engagements now that have had politician meddling. The 1991 Gulf War was short of a victory for us. We used total military superiority and then, for whatever reason, 100hrs into the ground invasion we stopped and retreated. Sound like Vietnam anyone?
Iraq 2003 had similar issues. We did not put our overwhelming force down due to "minimizing collateral damage." Our initial failure to stomach "collateral damage" resulted in us not putting down our full power. Our full "shock and awe." Our overwhelming force. Yea, well idea really failed us. Our way of minimizing initial collateral damage, has caused more and more death and destruction everyday.
Who is to blame for this. Many will say Republicans. Others George W Bush. Even still others Bush Sr. But truly all of these answers are wrong. We have no one to blame but ourselves. The American People.
Why you ask? After WWII, we lost our stomach to war. We separated ourselves from the long held "total war" policy and took on a more kinder, gentler philosophy. No civilian casualties. Minimal damage to infrastructure. Protect holy sites (even when occupied by hostiles). The only problem: it has failed us in every war since. We have not had a truly successful war outcome since WWII.
The total war concept is far from perfect. Agreed. And I don't think we should go out and adopt it again. But, at least it was clear cut in its goals. To win. There was no other option.
We, as a people, need to realize a few things. Things learned from thousands of years of human existence:
1. War is an inevitability.
2. In war, people die, on all sides, civilian and military alike.
3. To be the victor, you must be more persistent than your enemy, not necessarily more powerful.
4. To stop with victory in your sights is foolish.
5. History repeats itself; learn from it.
We cannot escape war. As long as humanity is on this Earth, war will always be among us. We must re-learn how to be victorious again, or our way of life will be subdued by someone else who has learned.
I find it interesting no one pointed out the fact that the title was wrong in the first few comments... interesting how the brain fills in the missing letter...
What annoyed the hell out of me at even a tender young age, was that not all of my cars would work with the tracks that I got. I was MOST annoyed that only 1-2 would work wiht the custom tracks that I put together from all the different tracks that I had.
Yes, but kids like me, would put the stuff that didnt fit on the track and make it go down the stairs anyway and laugh when it just fell off at the first jump.
I also put airplanes, plastic animals, etc down the track, just for fun. Its amazing how much you learn doing that... "Wheels make something go down track faster." Yea... I was a smart kid.
If "Leopard" is really what it claims to be, i.e. fast and efficient in sharp contrast to slow and resource hungry Windows Vista, we certainly would see Apple's remarkable market share gain next year.
This makes the assumption that the masses want "fast and efficient." I think quite the opposite. If the masses wanted fast and efficient, they would turn off the fancy stuff in XP and turn it back to looking like 2000. Sorry, but the masses are not interested in speed or efficiency, they are looking for eye candy, which is exactly why MS will not lose any significant market share.
The "Physicists Vs. Chemists" argument is not correct in and of itself as chemists utilize both methods. But back to the argument....
Both methods utilize the same assumptions:
--The substance tested was there at one point(i.e. vanillin
--It dissappears at constant rate
--Sample is representative
If any of these assumptions is false, then the analysis is flawed.
The use of vanillin dating was done after the carbon dating only after certain assumptions were thought to be in error, namely that of representative sampling. If the fiber samples were not sampled correctly, and thus are not representative, then it is accurate to state that the carbon dating is also not representative of the piece. Perhaps the scientists messed up and took fibers from the backing of the piece (sewn on to protect it centuries ago) instead of the actual shroud.
Vanillin dating, with the problems it possesses, is not exact by any means. Thus I'm not stating its correct either. Environment and detection limits(of vanillin) play a role and therefore this detection is also flawed. However, the fact that a middle age forgery should have a considerable amount of vanillin, far higher than the detection limit (37% of original) should be noted.
However, lets look at this hypothetically. This 'is' a burial shroud, that was used for what, 3 days. And then what? We don't know. What about the image on it? By what process is the image on the cloth? Dye? Burning? Something Else? What about the blood spots? Can we do a DNA test on Jesus?
All of these questions remain. It all boils down, at least for now, what you believe
I knew someone would eventually say and recognize the tremendous bias on/.
From anti-Microsoft to anti-Bush, sometimes it just upsets me. It makes me wonder, do the comments on/. have relevancy anymore? I mean, since I already know what they are going to say.....
I have read peoples comments on this hot issue. It seems to me that while the potential for abuse is high, potential for assistance is equally high.
Perhaps to alleviate the grief people see in placing these devices in/on children/law abiding citizens, we should just place them on criminals. Perhaps we would be violating the rights of these criminals, however, since they violated their rights or those of someone elses (thats why they are criminals right?) we should be able to track them, especially while on parole.
This would be a boon to the sex offender tracking system that could ensure that registered sex offenders stay away from places like schools.
There are numerous other applications on criminals without violating the privacy and rights of the law abiding public.
