    In other words, the patients have turned to heavy gaming because they felt they didn't fit in elsewhere, or that they fit in better 'in the game' than elsewhere in 'the real world.'

    Equating consciousness with a soul is certainly a huge leap in logic at best. Are we to believe that a person knocked unconscious whether temporarily or permanently suddenly loses his soul? I think that violates the fundamentals of every major religion that exists or has ever existed.

    Weird that the victim comes out richer. I would argue that if anybody is the victim, it is the john. Let's analyze this:

    1. Two strangers come together for sex.
    2. One leaves with more money, the other with less.

    Wouldn't you think if there was a victim, it would be the person who participated in exactly the same act, but came out with less money? The john is the victim of his sex drive.

    Add to that the fact that he owns a globe and can actually "see" all of the world's nations from his study. That right there is major foreign policy experience.

    Most data remains secure/not-stolen simply by accident.

    Actually, this is how most of my own security is done, e.g. figuring the odds. I lock my door at night, but is that going to stop someone determined to break in to my house? I play the odds that if criminals are randomly selecting houses to break in to that, just like the lottery, my number wont come up. It's not to say that more shouldn't be done, but like you said, it involves trade offs with other things that are also important (profits, ease, etc.)

    I think moving power more locally is a great idea

    I live in Utah. I think that moving more power locally is a fucking stupid idea. Adulthood is already banned here to the extent that they (Utah's Legislature) think that they can get away with. Please do not hand them more power.

    Agreed. A great site that I found for helping me to see and try and overcome my biases is overcomingbias.com Mostly the editors Robin Hanson and Eliezer Yudkowsky post, but I've seen posts by others. Most of the things on there are thought provoking and well written.

    From their welcome page:

    How can we obtain beliefs closer to reality?[...] We want to avoid, or at least minimize, the startling systematic mistakes that science is discovering. If we know the common patterns of error or self-deception, maybe we can work around them ourselves, or build social structures for smarter groups. We know we aren't perfect, and can't be perfect, but trying is better than not trying.
