  1. Re:Movies are too hard to Download on MPAA Calls for Ban on Screeners · · Score: 1

Never heard the argument that downloading a move is to hard from a slashdot reader before. From your first argument I don't know if you have ever used a P2P client but all you have to do is type in the name and double click on the file that you want. Its not hard in any way, most people will have the movie within a day or a few at most. Most movies that you would download are also not more than a gig in size, most are made to fit on one cd at around 700 MB, and they are encoded in Xvid or Divx format. Many computer users also have a video card that supports TV out so they can watch these movies over there television with very little noticeable difference over the real dvd. Except for extra scenes etc., but most people do not watch these anyways.

"But I know many people who have bootlegs of movies and considering the 8 dollar plus snacks and quality/crowding issues at theatres nowdays it's a wonder nobody makes returns to the movie no matter how good it is.."

This is definately more of an issue, I also know many people who due to the hassle of going to the movie, the high prices, the crowds and the seating would rather relax in the comfort of there own or a friends home and watch a movie. Sometimes a rented movie or sometimes a downloaded one.

"Such as the latest woody allen movie with christina ricci and the kid from american pie.. it was worthless.. I would of paid to see a slightly longer preview and been done with it instead of wasting 2 hours of my life watching what I thought was a boring movie."

Damn I also saw that movie and personally thought it was terrible. Many people today have been so dissapointed in the quality and originality of many movies today that they no longer have any desire to go to the theater and see the next revamp of something that was done twenty or thirty years ago.

Please explain how .NET is much more than Java. As a programmer they are two different architectures and .NET is different than Java, the statement .NET is more or better is false and quite honestly comes from asking a pointless question that has no relevance. They are different and both have different advantages over the other.

"What gets me is that this guy has the sheer _balls_ to write a Unix clone"

Linux is definately more than a UNIX clone and has shown to be so in the last few years. Linus, including others, also wrote much of the code from scratch. Most clones are direct copies of the original. Tell all the distros out there that there nothing more than Unix clones and that all there work has been for nothing as it is nothing but a Unix clone.

Lastly he never said they were incomptent or that they were stupid, he said that he was not interested in what they are currently working on. He works with the Linux Kernel and has not set out to destroy Microsoft, he has no need to be interested in what they are doing. Frankly most people are tired of hearing about M$, the majority of the news you here about them is how they are behind in security updates and new viruses are out using vulnerabilitis in the OS that a twelve year old learned to exploit before they did.

I am most excited so far about Final Fantasy VII, I am curious though to see what the developers are reffering to when they call it a new style of gaming which they name "visual content". If there is one thing we don't need is for them to cut more gameplay out of the game and add for cut scenes. However they when asked about "visual content" and if it was a movie they specifically said "no". Anyone know what they mean by this and what are they are planning on changing in terms of gameplay.

Often the search engine mainpage has large advertisements news etc. The majority of the users want a quick loading, fast search engine that will give out decent results that aren't biased in any way, other than of course content. Also why would I switch when google is continuing to do great and has for me since the very early days of its existence. Especially to a search engine created by Amazon. I trust them about as much as I do SCO.

  22. Re:Sun, eh? on Java Desktop System Rivals XP, OSX in Usability · · Score: 1

Exactly. Everyones seems to be so hateful towards a company that is being successful in the software industry and making money. In some cases software is going to cost money and that is perfectly reasonable. The people working at SUN are not kids that can play with computers all day long and write programs for fun, they are people that need to make a pay check and if they need to charge you for the software that they have created to do so then so be it. Furthermore for those who say they didn't create this OS they did create it even if it is a lot of source code from others, the other source code was realeased under the GPL and can be used by anyone who wishes. They created this as much as RedHat created there distro or any of the other distros out there. I love the Open Source movement and as a programmer have been a part of it and will continue to be a part of it but many of you seem to have it confused as Open Source equals every piece of software created be free or not be recognized as legitimate. Some pieces of software that are incredibly complex and that need to perform thousands of functions are going to cost money as the people programming them are not doing it for there pure enjoyment. This is evident as the Linux community has so many applications out there, yet so many of the large scale buisness applications that are critcal for the buisness world were not being created until now. The people that are pushing the development of these applications in most cases are large companies that see an interest in Linux and that would like to use it themselves. If anything this is going to push forward more software development for Linux based computers and give companies anothe big name OS to choose from to get them away from M$.

Microsoft is a huge monopoly, Redhat cannot be expected to compete with this(not likely ever but maybe one day). Its gonna take many other computer companies to take Microsoft out of the market and a large turn in the OS market. This has definately started to happen in the buisness world as the cost of running a full company using Microsoft products is getting to be too expensive especially when there a Linux distros that can do almost everything virtually the same, are more stable and that are free. Microsoft like many other companies in the past are going to have to adapt to survive and so far they don't seem to be doing a good job. Like a child they seem to have gotten scared and are attacking many of there adversies only creating more enemies. I haven't seen a company that is hated as much as Microsoft is in a long time(other than WorldCom and Enron).
