    They have now changed from Real technologies to Windows Media.

    This means no more "rght-click" & play in separte media player.

    Windows media sucks on Macs (no aliasing) and you have to keep it in a browser window.

    Does anybody know what the direct links to the videos are? I would like to bookmark "Now in the News"

    It would be great if we could verify Moore's law through some simple stats using the histrical data from this Top500 list.
    -For example:How many years did it take for Number ones on average to be dropped off the 500 list?

    - How many years after the list was published did it take personal computers tu make it in the 500list? To make it to the number 1 spot?

    - How many transistors did these computers have? Did it verify Moore's law?

    - Are we getting more TFLOPS per watt now? Per transistor?
    etc..

    First the guy complains about Spam and his difficulty running his own website on the same machine... and he posts a direct link to Slashdot.
    Ok
    Then you read his well documented ersearch n all the solutions he ahs tried. Fine. It's a nice read.

    However when this guyy complains about the SPAM itself and the resources (machine, time) he must dedicate to this I can only call foul!
    It is extremely clear that this guy ENJYOYS the glory of all this SPAM. Not for the spam itself but for the sheer fact that he is the most spammed man in the world.
    If he is so concerned about spam he should just set his MX to some professional mail hosting company, let them deal with the bandwith, hosting, and all. There are so many solutions out there.
    This guy is just a geek who likes to fiddle his machine, spend some time on it and then brag abou how hard it is but how he has conquered. He probably doesn't have anything better to do or to spend money on.
    Oh well, whatever floats his boat.

    I'm just waiting for some typically PC only games to come to consoles such as Age Of Mythology etc...
    They require a mouse (done with AOE for PS2) AND a hig hres display.
    I hope the new high res capabilities of the next gen consoles will be used for some computer like experience.

    Excep that AAa run at 1.5V each which is unlikely to be the voltage of the battery in this baby (phone & PDA batteries are usually between 3.5 and 5V)

    So yes you get 4600mAh with two AA batteries but only at 1.5V (or more precisely 1.2V which is the electric potential for Ni-MH).
    Or you get 2300mAh at 1.2V*2 (2.4V).

    You should think in terms of power by having a simple U*I
    So if the battery in the tablet rated for 1500mAh @ 4V, then power = 6W
    Power for a couple of Ni-MH at 2300mAh each is 2*(2.3*1.2)=5.52W
    The battery they will use is also probably LIthium which makes it lighter and more resistent to charge fade. Did I mention it is also much smaller?

    AA are only good if you need power in standard format, ie you can go to the local Eckerds and get some juice for your Camera, Palm etc..
    They are not the best things for W/cm^3 or W/gram

    Laugh all you want, but there's no way in hell I am going for SIP again.
    That's right SIP sucks for all the reasons stated above; security, DDOS, Spam etc..

    VoIP however doesn't need to suck. DDoSes are easily taken care of by NAT Firewalls.
    Security? Try breaking 256 bits AES with your leet AMD Fx-51.

    Spam? just lock out those who aren't explicity allowed.

    But I here you say, SIP cannot do all these thigns. And you're right, but VoIPSIp and Skype is also VoIP

    Skype takes care of all these little problems for me. Sure it's closed source and all. But it's popular and I'm sure if they decide to get all stupid removing these features or chanarging for the currently free services somebody else will move right in and do the same new thing.

    Mark my words, the minute somebody comes out with a small embedded linux or other device that just plugs in the ethernet socket and allows you to SKype (no computer needed), you will see Skype's exponential growth curve steepen even more.

    SIP sucks, get over it.
    VoIP rocks.

    Call me naive, but wouldn't all this money not be best invested in an agreement with a manufacturer to release for say half of his line-up in the next five years, open-source drivers?
    If no manufacturer joins in, why not put up a bounty for people to write these open source drivers?
    As much as I adhere to open source software, hardware open source just sounds like communism in my mind; hardware needs money. And investors kinda like a yield on their cash.

    Well you are right, but I think the gp has a point as well; we should be taking reasonable measures not to expose ourselves to the "bad" guys.
    Making there life a little harder isn't forbidden.

    I have setup a VPN server on my home computer so that when I am travelling or when I connect via an unsecure connection (i.e Starbucks) I can always VPN my way home and not matter about security as much.

    Looks like all the systems are beefing up the Video Cards to support the latest and the best from Tiger (i.e. at least 64Mb and programmable GPU required to support core image).

    As much as I like my Mac mini, I am torn apart wishing they would either#:
    a) upgrade their video cars to something like an ATI 9600 with 64 Mb of Ram
    b) don't change anything so I won't feel the *URGE* to upgrade to a Higher Spec Mac Mini.

    ARgg, Apple has embraced drug dealer like methods; I am now hooked and I won't be able to quench my thirst until something else hits my desk!

    I di get the Ram update ..sorta.
    I bought the full spec Mac Mini 1.42Ghz. Comes standard with 512MB of ram.

    For those out there calling bogus on the choppyness, I doubt you have high res screens.
    More resolution eats up more video memory. Simple as that.
    32M is barely enough to drive a 20" screen at 1600*1050 and still have fluid motion.

    Just go to the nearest apple store and check it out yourself.

    However don't expect all the bells and whistles with only 32 Mb of video ram.
    I have a Mini with a 20" Cinema Display and expose is already choppy (Courtesy of the 1600*1050 display).
    I've read Tiger will require 64 Mb of Video Ram for all the cool "Core Video" features.

    Does anybody know if they managed to get these features working on the Mini? Apple would be shotting itself in the foot if a 2005 machine could not run their 2005 OS

    The one last thing that could even more favorise live CD adoptions could be online settings and file storage.
    Sure you can carry around a USB key and store your settings there. But imagine being able to boot a machine anywhere and beinga ble to retrieve your field from something ala Yahoo briefcase.

    Solutions exist out there; think GMailFS
    If they would include this on the KNOPPIX CD with automount and all..
    I am drooling just thinking about the possibilities!

    Guess the cell phone operators who spent all the billions just 3 years ago must be about to enter headless chicken mode.

    They spent more than just for the *LICENSE* than what is required for deployment. Check this out for yourself http://www.cellular-news.com/3G/
    Licenses are typically upwards of $4 billion dollars.
    Carriers have to spend EXTRA for the deployment.

    Ok, I know some of you will say that 3G is not exactly the same as Wi-Max (especially with regards to handing-overs). But a wi0fi voip will work just enough for me to use especially if the calls are unlimited and free.

    Heads should start rolling just about now...

    Come on, although the poster might have a point in saying that Hondas are extremely reliable, he just cannot say Ferraris are not reliable and will break-down.

    I am the -lucky- friend of a Ferrari owner's son. He's had a Maserati cambiocorsa and now owns a 575 Maranello.
    Yes these things have un-satisfiable thirst.
    Yes they cost a shit load in insurance.
    Yes you will change the tires every 5000 Miles

    However,
    No they will not break-down as you go for a WE trip

    People will break-down with ferraris just a much as any other car when all you do is trash it at the green lights (kills the clutch, transmission and tires).
    A lot of these people go out on the tracks come bitching about brakes screaching and all is normal.

    Pretty much any car, will have reduced life expectancy if you abuse it. And I think there is a higher tentation trashing a Ferrari than a measly Civic LX.

    There is a good reason why Ferraris are the best selling super-sport cars (besides Porsche). And yes reliability is increasingly a reason for that.

    There are roughly 6 billion people on earth. 1% of that is "only" 60 Million.

    You are way off. According to this site (http://www.internetworldstats.com/top25.htm) it is more like 12.7% of the WHOLE population.

    Your point isn't void, but at least use some reasonable figures.

    You are right there is more.

    I forgot to mention the scarcity aspect that "seals the deal".
    People *MUST* buy it now or else regret taking too long to make up their minds and wait 6 months to get it!

    Just have a look at the iPod shuffle. Apple knew they were gonna sell this like there is no tomorrow. Heck just a year ago they were in shortage of Ipod Minis for twice the price!

    They have mastered the science in creating envy from their fan base and a key element to that is making sure there is never enough at first for all but a few "lucky" consumers.

    Who hasn't heard Apple stories were people were gratefull for being able to *buy* an Apple product?

    Heck I am happy to throw some cash in for products I like but I don't feel lucky. Some people do because Apple (and other premium brand companies) can make these people believe that the cash they are handing over is worth LESS than what they get.

    Long live Apple.

    1. Start by announcing something cheaper than competition or usual
    2. Stress out benefits of given product so potential buyers actually think it's good value.
    3. Let early buyers get in.
    4. For those still undecided, actually improve the deal (i.e more features, ie. superdrive) and/or cut the price
    5. Those actually undecided that thought it was already good value now think this is fantastic value.
    6. Sell like crazy

    I think this technique is call "push-over" or something like that. The key to it is to convince people that even at a premium your product is fantastical value (Apple sure knows a lot ib this field). The more you convince people at step 2, the easier the push-over.
    IMHO, APPLE had it all laid out. They knew they could make the fat margins with early adopters and then have the extra publicity announcing this. It keeps the momentum...

    Well, has it occured to you that they may have a smallish encrypted ans signed file that holds information about well known pirated keys. The installer would then look up your system kwy against that database and grant or not installation..

    That's exactly what they currently do with the identifying software. Except that they hold ALL the existing keys. The method with the known "hacked" keys could possibly not work against Key-generated keys. That is unless they manage to fit the entire population of keys on that cd (including the keys of copies to be sold in the next 12 months for ex).

    Or they could simply allow the product to work for i.e. 30 days (as for XP activation) and then request that you connect to the net to validate the key.
