This is a commercial product, not residential. I don't think Vonage provides any SLA to their customers, nor it is regulated to demand some minimal reliability standards. They are working in "best effort" mode. While it is good for day to day regular phone use, I think it is not suitable for real time alarm system.
You see, the problem is that no VoIP provider gives you five nines availability SLA, but I think this is what government requires from land line phone providers. My ISP (one of the biggest in Canada) can disconnect me for half an hour or 1 hour during night time without any warnings. I bet other ISPs have same level of "service".
And while I totally agree with you that VoIP phone is as good as land line for phone calls, I would not base my security system on it.
You can boot from network. You can have a file storage in the network. You can run without any local storage at all. It is not an issue. However, I would never store my personal files somewhere outside of my home. But may be it is just me.
Run ssh tunnel from your desktop to your home computer (I assume you don't have websense at home:8), run proxy on your home computer and make sure proxy listens on localhost only, configure proxy on your desktop computer to go over the tunnel to your home computer's proxy. Enjoy!:)
When you need to upgrade linux kernel, you need to reboot. And as far as I remember, during last year there were at least two times debian advised to upgrade their kernel. So, it is not only windows that have to be rebooted, sometimes linux have to be rebooted as well.
However, I assume that you had to reboot your windows servers more. I don't have this information because I don't have any windows servers, it is just my common sense.
I'm not saying don't come. All I'm saying is that if somebody invited you to come to new country, don't compain that you don't like the way it is goverened. You should accept it. Because it is you, who came there, no one dragged you to come. If you think that new place is better, say thank you. If you think your old place was better, go back. Or move to another place.
The point is, it is like when somebody invites you for a dinner, it is very impolite to complain about the way they live in their house. If you don't like it, you'll never come back. But you have no right to demand from the host to change the way they live just because you came for the dinner.
First of all, I'd like to assert that in my option implanting tracking device into humans is a very sick idea in general.
Now to the subject. Being immigrant myself, I don't see any problem for the government to make whatever rules they want to apply for new immigrants and temporary workers. Before coming to Canada, I checked all the requirements and obligations that I take. It is a personal choice to immigrate to that country or not. If you don't like the rules, don't come. It is very simple. As long as the rules are not applied to the people who already came, I don't see any problem to require whatever they want to require.
So I don't understand how come people come to new place and start complaining that some immigration rules are not fair. Just don't come, stay were you are. Or go to a different place.
I don't understand why US goverment can't make new rules if they think they are neccesary. You don't like it, don't immigrate to US. If the rules will be that bad, that no sane man will decide to immigrate, they will change the rules.
Best Buy won't do it; I tried. In fact I even offered to buy my malfunctioning computer back from them (that was getting a free warranty replacement), and they refused.
This is exactly why you should not buy a computer from bestbuy and co.
There should never be an excuse for selling or transfering ownership of a hard drive with pre-existing data when there are fast, free, and convienient utilities that can effectively remove all data without damaging HDD functionality. Physical destruction is of course, the most secure method of permanently wiping data, but for most folks good software based data destruction should be more than sufficient.
This is true, but if your computer hardware dies in a way that the computer won't boot or power on at all, then average non-technical person would have no choice, but to go to some kind of repair shop. And if this shop is dishonest, all kind of things can happen.
I personally never deal with big retail stores when I need to buy some computer hardware. I find that small shops and online ratailers almost always have better price and better service.
IP over powerlines is already deployed in many places in Europe. My previous employer had 2 very big projects involcing access and routing equipment in Germany. It was 5 or 6 years ago.
Good for you being able to avoid responsibility to the point where you can- I've got a mortgage and a family to pay for.
Dude, you missed the point. If you are good, then you will not have any problem finding a job, if you are not, then you need union because your abilities can't bring you the benefits you want.
I totally agree that union for IT is not good because your salary should be based on your production and knowledge, not on how long you are in the industry. Otherwise you'll get the same old story with banch of lazy morons that do nothing, get biggest salary and you can't fire them (read any big union out there).
Just make it free or cheap enough and they won't have any problems. There will be no reason to choose google pay system if paypal will be cheap/free. Paypal works fine.
Of course on my linux side I have no virus problems, but it's also been ages since I've dealt with a windows virus, because I keep things updated and use better web browsers and email clients, and I also strongly suggest the same practises to people I know, people who I know will come to me for help when they get one. Viruses just aren't a problem if you use your computer intelligently and remain somewhat suspicious of odd behaviour.
Who said that linux is virus proof? It is not, no-one is writing linux viruses. Who said that firefox or thunderbird have no buffer overflows or other bugs. In fact, there were enough security updates to show that on-one is bug proof. I'm not trying to say that IE and firefox are same quality, in fact, I think that firefox is much better. I'm just saying that just because you use linux it does not meen that you are virus proof.
Now, many of recent viruses require user interraction to run, like encrypted zip files with.exe file in there and password to the zip file in email. Don't tell me that the same dumb person that get his computer infected in windows, won't do the same in linux. The only reason that there are no viruses for linux is that there are very few dumb people that use linux as their desktop, so it is not worth to make linux viruses yet.
I think they can request a bond to be put aside for a case when all other 4 patents fail. If this is the case then NTP should think about it very carefully because if they lose the other 4 patents they are ought to lose lots of money in the bond. And this is on top of the legal charges.
I really don't understand why NTP don't want to settle. I think RIM offered some money to them.
For the NHL professionals (or any other professional competing) this is not something they are dying to win. A lot of the time they are more worried about their National endorsements (think basketball star controversy) and/or they are worried about not going all out because they might get hurt and injure themselves and hurt their professional career. (Yes, not all think like this, but enough do which takes away some of the spirit of the games.)
This is completely wrong for team Canada and I'm sure for team USA as well. There are many canadian players that really wanted to go to Olymics but didn't get the place in the team, so there are no players in the team that did not want to play and win.
From all of those database engines, Access was the only one in which I could transport the data in a flash drive without any hassle (just copy de MDB file). I did not needed to install any program to show the database to other people using snapshot viewer.
You see, that's why you don't understand other people. It is because main feature of database server is not to be able to copy data to flash disk, is to be database server.
And now, that you can get MSSQL desktop for free, there is absolutely no reason to use access as a backend.
I experienced last 15 years of 70 years of communism which should now be called "Occupy Russia". I hope to never see this in the United States.

In a few years every other phone will be smart phone.
Last two elections were stolen in the US. Is there really a big difference?
It is harder to steal the voted using paper. It is much easier to manipulate e-voting.

Most of the power is spent on the LCD diplay of the camera.

Personally, if something like this appens, 3.6 million is like a slap on the wrist. Seriously, that is nothing for the big networks.
You missed the point. The point was that there should be no fine at all.
Because you can't download a free support :)

Will the online service be free? :)
Huh? No, they will pay you money for just using it!
I'll take a loot at your link. But from what I can see, all firefox instances that I have seen so far eat lost of memory.
