True. But if the original poster had supplied a bunch of config and log files, I'll bet there would be a bunch of people here providing more relevant technical solutions. Unfortunately, performance questions that seem very general often have very case-specific answers.
Oh, it is NOT because they TRY to mimic C, I assure you.
Are you aware that NVIDIA's Cg stands for "C for graphics"? Also, CUDA "uses a recursion-free, function-pointer-free subset of the C language, plus some simple extensions."
These days we are also starting to think how we can utilize vector processors, which to gamers are quite familiar as their video cards. Everyone has one, either they know it or not, nowadays they install a 500 mFlops graphics card in PCs in use by hotel receptionists.
Think about what languages these GPUs are programmed in (CUDA, Cg, GLSL, etc.), and what language do these languages in turn try to mimic? Oh yeah, C.:-P
When my workplace "upgraded" to Office 2007, performance became abysmal. Powerpoint is now awful, and Excel is slow, too. Navigating slides is now an exercise in patience. (The performance of Vista, now available on XP!)
Any word on whether Office 2010 can bring back reasonable performance?
I just tried it yesterday. It seems to work fine. No fast-forward/reverse, but forward/backward selection from an image preview stack works well enough for me (for now).
It does seem like the default auto-bitrate tends to set things on the low side. Try control-shift-alt-b to manually select from the three available bitrates, and control-shift-alt-m for a menu of other interesting stuff.

Running from the Ds and Ls, and killing all the Os.

Why should she change her phone number for goodness sake?
Even if the perpetrators are caught, she may still have to change her phone number, so she should probably consider just doing it now. Now that her number has been associated with the scammers, the effects may linger for a long time.
The exercises are generally some of the few things that change between additions, so this may not be possible (I don't mean changing problem and page numbers, but changing the exercises themselves).
There really are people out there like Karl Rove, whose main purpose in life is to rewrite history and twist it to suit his philosophy. We need to be careful that school textbooks are not political tools that are easily and quickly changed to suit the whims of any current administration. Having said that, it's still possible that some day when oversight of government is suitably restored, it's conceivable that government could subsidize textbook authoring without mandatating a single textbook to all schools.
Is there any way to make Windows 98 safe enough for web browsing? It would definitely be nice to set up my old laptop for a kid, but it would be good to support both simple Windows games and web browsing (installing Linux might eliminate a lot of games)
yeah, there's no use for an encyclopedia with detailed information on all edible plants out in the middle of nowhere where there's no cell access.
Might not be as useful without pictures, though.

Sure they could have. And they didn't. But all interested slashdot nerds now know the magic incantations to set the bitrate. Enjoy.

As a general rule of thumb, if an envelope says "Important" on it, it can go right in the trash. One exception is tax documents from a known source.
We also don't have eight hour waiting periods to be seen either
I guess you've never had to visit the ER.
First up the enermax aurora keyboard. This is absoloutely 100% standard US key layout, every key is exactly where you would expect it,
Looks nice, but I still don't understand the common misspelling of "Ctrl" as "Caps Lock".

Okay, not really. I actually typed the above with my pinky fingers on the Shift keys (my Caps Lock and Ctrl keys are both mapped to Ctrl).

How does the current generation of stereoscopic 3D tech differ from ... 5 years ago?
The underlying technology works the same, but the experience has improved with support for more games, more graphics cards, and new hardware.
What about coating a roof w/ used CD's! I want to be the first to coat my roof (shiny side up) w/ nothing but metallica albums!
VERY interesting idea. Green reuse of CDs as shingles. Plus, aliens can play them from space!
So for just 3 or 4 of these "softballs" we can pay the salary for a police officer on the streets. That sounds really efficient.
Consider that the device might last more than a year.
Kramer, is that you?
Explain to me how rude it is to send a quick text message from a movie theater.

Wasn't he the one who invented the field of Internet Al Gore Rhythms?
I think it's pretty naive to suggest Powell was somehow misled. In the end, he made his bed with Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, etc.
Ah, feeling nostalgic for a game of Microbe on my Apple ][e.
Whoosh!
