    You can't take a word that's in common use, re-define it, and expect people to take it up.

    No I guess not, maybe I was over reacting.

    So in the spirit of your comment I am looking forward to Microsoft loosing the Windows tradmark case against Lindows ;-)

    The problem is that you always get the asinine question "Can you prove it"

    No I can't, but it is a lot more likely than the crap organized churches dishes out and that even intelligent people thinks is honky dory.

    The headline really irritates me as I was hoping the word Bright was gaining traction in the Do not believe in a deity sense.

    Why not use intelligence in it's many forms for what the guy is after.

    Atheist has a negative meaning foisted upon us by the Theists that seems to be unable to accord the Faith "reasoning" to non-theists that they themselves hold so dear.

    Are you sending documents for a business purpose, or for fun?

    Mostly fun like friends and family, but I do it occasionally in a business setting if the receiving party need me more than I need them.

    IF a significant portion of the OO.o users did likewise I think it would help to reduce the MS stranglehold. Akin to the thinking that an alternative browser only need 15%-20% marketshare before most websites will design to standards not IE.

    Mostly friends and family so decent response. I do use pdf but a 50k .sxw file swells to 250k or so. Additionally I like to get files that I can work with. If I get a pdf of a spreadsheet I can only look at it. If I get an .xls or .swc file I can play around with the data, helping me understand it better.

    If you use RTF you play MS' game as you will most likely get a .doc file back. I want to send myfile.sxw and have the MS folks screw around with the filters.

    I am aware of this. The point was to just send native OO.o files. Not some old or half asses fileformat developed for a different purpose.

    The point is to avoid sending .doc files Word97 or otherwise. Send native OO.o files and let the MS folks screw around with the filters.

    I agree. We need openoffice to MS Office filters though. I am tired of sending .sxw or .sxc files to people and having to later point to OO.c for them to read it. (Sending .doc files is not an option, as it plays to MS)

    I would be much better if you could suggest a filter that they could use within MS Office to read and write OO.o files directly.

    Once OO.o reaches a 15%-20% marketshare, the battle is won as you can then demand they read your files not that they need to be "translated"

    Their normal Mode of Operation is actually to hold conferences 1-2 days before a major ruling is due, so as not to have to "explain it"

    There must be some other reason, maybe they didn't want to talk about the Baystar deal. They got ahead on a profit basis, but it was done at the expense of the shareholders and their cash position fell by $13M.

    Additionally it is probably hard to answer question about Why Baystar bailed and "How are you going to get more cash?"

    Look at the bright side. Baystar and RBC got shafted as they so richly deserve and there is potential more money to be had by IBM when SCO is ordered to pay legal fees.

    Obviously this requires they case is decided before they are totally broke. A big if, but looking better every day.

    Thirdly we will have a clear wipeout of SCO. If they went bust before the fat lady sings this could still leave some doubt (FUD residue) about the GPL etc.

    This "lease" model proposed by Schwartz will not work

    IBM had this model in it's hayday and they almost lost their bearings as a result. They slowly started to act like a finance company and were so tied to the "installed base" mentality that they missed all the new markets. Mini computers, Fault tolerant computing, Storage networks, etc etc. They went into copiers, sattelite networks, and telecom (ROLM) in an effor to "leverage" the leasing model not for any technological reason.

    Akers et al spend more time of predicting future interest rates than future technologies.They only survived as their 80% market share made cost of entry for the likes of Amdahl and Fujitsu too expensive.
