All science is to some extend bassed on layers of theory, however each new theory, if correctly done, explains all the known facts but often includes elements of predictions along the lines of "If this theory is correct we will expect to see X".
Now we can go looking for X and if we find it and the prediction was somewhat unexpected before the theory was proposed it is a strong indication of its validity.
Case in points Einsteins prediction of light being bend by high gravity object that was indeed confirmed.
Same here if we do find a a lot of different Dinosaurs in the same narrow strada around the world it make the theory more likely.
The Lindows guys surely chose this name to ride on MS' coattails
As did Microsoft. MS stole a word from the commons and benefitted from this. You benefit in the beginning as your product is selfdescriptive, later on you pay a price since you can't protect it.
Take your oick and live with it. MS did but refuses to live with their decision. They deserves to lose and they will lose. If Lindows for some obscure reasons looses they will win an appeal and the case will be remanded. Windows as a MS trademark is Doomed (tm?)
Dell is not really copying HP or Apple technology.
Intel is driving the ship for pretty much the whole PC industry (AMD x64 aside). Intel does much more than the CPU's They are active on all the levels. Just look at the IF's APG was Intel Now being supplanted by PCI-X. Etc.
The whole NYT article is missing the point, the innovations are still there they are just one step removed in the food chain. Take another axample. Who it the real innovator in the Handheld space? Texas Instruments.
It is the silicon that drives the electronic industry not the assemblers like DEll
No this would be called a Fishing expedition. If they had indeed cited specific lines of code to be copyright of SCO then indeed they could use the information from FSF as evidence.
What alternate resources would you recommend in order to become grounded in history?
Maybe I shouldn't post this here but head on over to the alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.spoken-word newsgroup and download some of The Teaching Company's material.
If you are quick or have a news seerver with longer retention you can catch the History of China Yao to Mao 5000 years or and excellent lecture series about Ancient Egypt.
Look in this newsgroup and you will find a lot of excellent stuff. I think the TTC actually benefits from this as often people posts that they have bought different series following a few weeks of listening to what is being posted.
I too did enjoy the How the Irish saved civilization but it is not an effective way of learning about the subject. If you have a fairly good sense of history it is fine and entertaining, but if you want to get grounded in history it is less than useful.
As an example he spend 3 chapters talking about St. Augustin of Hippo juxtaposed to St. Patrick. What came out of it could be summarized in a few paragraphs.
St. Patrick became the first missionary following St. Paul and had little formal education.
Well educated St. Augustin stayed at home in Hippo and conjured up the City of God based on Allaric's sacking of Rome in 410.

IBM filed for Summary judgement. yesterday

FSF Subpoenaed by SCO

The latest filings in this case if from Yesterday where IBM has filed for Summary judgement.
SCO is screwed by their own admission

SCO has advised the court that it has provided complete and detailed responses to the Court's orders. If that is true, then summary judgement is appropriate because SCO has no evidence of IBM's alledged infringement (as SCO has adduced none). If it is not true, then summary judgement is appropriate because SCO has not only defied two orders of the Court, but it has also falsely certified that it has provided complete, detailed and thorough answers to IBM's interrogatories and the Court's orders. Either way, the Court should forthwith enter summary judgment in favor of IBM.
Well they tried this crap two years ago at the behest of Microsoft. The article was so bad that it was pulled after just one day.
Look here for a copy, captured before it was pulled..
This is a little know fact about the Library of Alexandria. At the time the other great Library was in Pergamum and they competed for the top spot.
The Ptolemic Pharaoh stopped the export of parpyrus for a period to try to gain the upper hand. This embargo resulted in pergamom (Origin of word paper)being used as substitute. Pergamom could not easely be concateneted into long roll like Papyrus so they used leafs and later started to bind them into fore-runner of a book.
Since Intel is adopting a performance naming system a la AMD why wouldn't they just lock the multiplier like today and maybe the max bus speed. Remember the next generation smart BIOSs are in the works so the bus speed can be "controlled" via that.
Not to mention that the reason that SCO "terminated" the AIX license to begin with was due to the alleged copyright infringements perpetrated by IBM by submitting code to improve Linux.
I know the history and agree with you that Novell has always be a tad sleazy from back to the Noorda days.
I think Messman is actively trying to get rid of this factor as he is an outsider that arrived with the merger of Novell and Messman's consulting company (forget name).
I agree I hate Real with a passion. Make MS look good. Anyone by the way know how to get AirAmericato play with Mplayer. It worked the first few days but now they have changed it and I flat out refuse to install Real's Spy / Spam ware
We all know that inabiliity to run your own business is always IBM's fault.

I guess he will have lost of quiet reading time next few years.
This would makes obvious that the Windows qualified was just a generic way of making sure that people understood what the program did.

Good we now have a decent President that ask for devine guidance before having people killed. 763 as of today I believe for no good reason

Little off topic but ther is a good article about Linux emulation on NetBSD over at Newsforge
Go figure!
Maybe not but it will have an impact on the general public's perception of the war.
Just the fact that /. is carring the story is proof.
Spybot rather
"I look at this as bad news for SCO," said Dion Cornett, an analyst for Decatur Jones Equity Partners -
Please let me know how you get a job like this.
Here I am posting to Slashdot risking Mod Point and all when I could put my brain in Neutral and make Money.

The move to MA is part of this effort I think.

Remember that just because you are not paranoid doesn't mean you are not being followed.

On the contrary Let's hope they are related as that would be irrefutable proof of attempted extortion and subject to criminal RICO charges.
