    Eric was on TheLinuxshow last night where his letter to Sun was discussed. (You can hear the show here)

    The point of the letter was a follow-up to Sun's comment that they were a "friend of Opensource". There is no metric for what it takes to be a Friend and Eric wanted to put a stake in the ground for what this would entail.

    The OpenSource / Torvalds creed of "Show me".

    Please note that there is no accusations in Eric's letter. It would have been easy to include the SCO/ Sun tie but he refrained from doing so.

    Windows is something my mother associates with buttons, menus and blinking cursors.

    Must be because it is dark most of the time during winter. Here in the south we associate Windows with Sunshine and ability to assertain at a glance what is going on outside.

    As an aside MS co-opted Windows as a means to make it immediately clear what they idea of the software was. This is fine but the took something from the Commons in that process and they need to live with the consequenses.

    The flipside of using a generic name is that it stays generic and you can't take it. Get a benefit at the onset pay the price later. Simple as that.

    They could have picked a meaningless name or a novel amalgamation Like NetScape and they would have had a slightly steeper initial climb but easier task of protecting it.

    I have no problem with counterfeit measures in Abobe or now in HP's product.

    That is as long as I know that it is there. My real concern is all the gunk that is inside commercial closed source software the we do not know.

    I think it somewhat depends on the attitude.

    Yes, Some Buzzword complient person that has no real understanding of the underlaying issues it pretty annoying. The kind of person that buys P4's to Make the Internet go faster TM Intel with his 56K dial-up.

    However what tend to irritate me more is someone that has no interest in finding out what was wrong. Meaning that even if it is a absolutely simple issue that person will have no qualms asking for help with same problem a week later.

    People that complains about pop-ups but refuses to use Mozilla even with IE skin. You know the type.
